The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for Cruz Roja and honestly, it’s a tough run. For the next couple of weeks, this spot is basically flat or showing tiny, weak dribble. There’s no real swell to speak of, and when there is a pulse, the period is short and the energy is minimal. We’re talking a long gap with nothing worth paddling out for.

Water temp is sitting at 74°, which is about 0.5° warmer than average for the time of year—nothing to write home about, just standard September warmth.

Alright, let’s walk through it. Monday the 14th starts off glassy in the morning with a 3 mph NE breeze and clear skies, but there’s zero swell. The afternoon goes cross-off from the NNW, still no waves. Tuesday the 15th sees a tiny 2 ft from the ENE with a shocking 4-second period, combined energy of just 10 (weak). The morning has a cross-shore breeze, the afternoon cleans up a bit with a cross-off from the north, but it’s still poor.

From Wednesday the 16th right through to Sunday the 20th, it’s mostly flat or showing a 0.3 ft from the south with long periods (12-13 seconds) but only 3 units of energy. That’s not even enough for a ripple. Winds are mostly cross-off or light, but there’s nothing to ride. The 20th has a brief moment with a 6 mph offshore from the NW, but still just 0.3 ft.

The next week, from Monday the 21st through to Sunday the 27th, we see tiny bumps: 1 ft to 2 ft from the northeast, periods still short at 3-5 seconds, combined energy barely reaching 22 on the 23rd. Winds stay mostly cross-off from the north. On the 24th, there’s a 0.3 ft from the southwest with a 14-second period, but again, almost no energy (8). The 26th and 27th show 0.3 ft from the southwest with periods around 11-12 seconds, but energy is only 5 or 4. The last few days, the 28th and 29th, are more of the same: 0.3 ft from the south, shortish periods, and moderate north winds.

There’s simply no standout here. The whole 16-day window is a bust. For a spot that’s exposed to the south, the optimum swell direction is from the south, but we’re not getting any real size or power. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent normally, but right now it’s just not happening. Keep the board in the car and check back—forecasts can change. Rusty.
