The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.

First up, we’ve got a long stretch ahead with very little to get excited about. The first few days are a write-off, honestly. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting at only 52 on Friday morning, so it’s a flat start. We’re looking at a gap of several days with no real surf on offer until Sunday morning.

Alright, let’s talk about the first real chance. Collaroy – a beach and point break that’s consistent and fairly exposed to the swell. This place is a beginner-friendly setup, but it’s not going to be a walk in the park.

Sunday, July 19th – The morning brings a swell of 7ft from the ENE, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a longer period groundswell, which means it’ll have some punch, but it can be a bit straight at the beach. The cross-shore wind is gentle, but it’s a cross, so it’s not perfect. The combined energy is 1027, which is strong, but the surf quality is marginal due to tide conditions. The afternoon sees a similar 7ft swell, period dropping to 10 seconds, but still a lot of energy in the water (861). It’s a bit challenging for the average surfer. The water temperature is about 64°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Monday, July 20th – This is the standout. The morning is glassy, with a light westerly wind offshore. The swell is 6ft from the ENE, period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is 571. This is a classic setup for a clean, fun session. The water is glassy, which is a major positive. This is the best on offer in the whole window. The conditions are good, but the swell is a bit over 5ft, so it might be a little too much for absolute beginners. The afternoon turns ugly with a strong onshore wind, so get in early and get out.

Tuesday, July 21st – Another morning window. Glassy conditions again, with a light north-northwest wind. The swell is 5ft from the ENE with a 10-second period, combined energy 440. This is another solid, clean session. It’s a repeat of Monday morning but with a slightly smaller swell. The afternoon is again ruined by an onshore wind.

Wednesday, July 22nd – The swell drops to 4ft, period 10 seconds, energy down to 205. The morning is clean with a cross-offshore wind, but it’s very ordinary. Not a session to plan a trip around.

Thursday, July 23rd – The swell drops further to 3ft, energy down to 94. It’s surfable but very ordinary. Not worth the paddle.

From Friday, July 24th, through to the end of the period, the surf is basically flat. The wave heights drop to 2ft, then 1ft, and eventually to nothing. There’s a brief blip of a very long period swell (20 seconds) on August 1st, but the energy is only 12 and the wind is onshore and lumpy. It’s a no-go.

So, for the 16-day window, the only real standouts are Monday morning, July 20th and Tuesday morning, July 21st, both at Collaroy. The water is glassy, the swell is solid, and the conditions are clean. The rest of the time is a flat, poor-quality mess. If you’ve got a board, those two mornings are your window.

Stay patient, and don’t waste your energy on the rest.

Rusty.
