The Lowdown
Alright, it’s Rusty again, giving you the rundown in feet and miles per hour.
The next 16 days at Collaroy start off slow, but there’s a solid window of decent swell mid-period that’s worth a look. Water temp is about 64°F, which is average for the season.
First chance to paddle out is Friday July 17th, but it’s a waste of time. A tiny 2ft east swell with a weak 6-second period and combined energy of 54. Glassy, but no power.
Saturday July 18th is still no good. The swell bumps to 3ft in the morning, but the wind is cross-off from the SSE at 12 mph, and energy is only 83. The afternoon has a 4ft east swell, period up to 7 seconds, and energy at 121, but it’s cross-shore and messy.
Sunday July 19th is the one. The morning brings a 7ft ENE swell with a long 11-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1078 – that’s strong. The wind is light and cross-shore. The afternoon cleans up with clear skies, a 7ft swell, still 10 seconds, and energy at 787. The swell direction is right on the money for Collaroy’s optimum from the NE. With the swell over 5ft, it’s too big for beginners, and you might find a few others out there ("sometimes" crowds). This is your best bet.
Monday July 20th morning is still good: a 6ft ENE swell, 10-second period, 594 energy, and a light cross-off wind from the west. Clean. The afternoon turns onshore from the NE at 9 mph, so it’ll get choppy.
Tuesday July 21st morning is glassy with a 5ft ENE swell, 10-second period, and 380 energy. That’s a real gem for the experienced crew.
After Tuesday, it’s a slow fade. Wednesday July 22nd has a 3ft swell, energy dropping to 164, but Wednesday afternoon goes glassy again with a 3ft swell. Thursday is small and clean. By Friday July 24th, it’s back to 2ft and weak.
From Saturday July 25th all the way to August 1st, it’s flat. Swell heights drop to 1ft and below, with energy in the single digits. Even with offshore winds, there’s nothing to ride. The second week is a total washout.
So, your standout is Sunday July 19th, with the morning offering the biggest, most powerful swell. Tuesday morning July 21st is the runner-up for a cleaner session. After that, you’re better off doing something else.
Rusty.
