The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Looks like we've got a proper run of swell coming in for Cape Young Husband, but it's a bit of a mixed bag with the wind. The water's sitting at 61°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real action kicks off on Sunday the 19th of July. The morning's looking sweet with a moderate offshore breeze from the north, cleaning up a 4ft SW groundswell. The period is a long 12 seconds, so there's some proper energy in the water (combined energy of 968). It's a point break, so that long period will wrap in nicely. Things get even better that afternoon – the swell holds at 4ft, but the period jumps to a very long 18 seconds, and the energy kicks up to 1265. This is proper groundswell, and for experienced surfers, it's going to be pumping. The wind stays offshore, so expect clean, lined-up walls. This is the standout session of the whole forecast.
Moving into Monday the 20th, the swell builds to 6ft with a 15-second period and energy at 1413. The morning is still offshore, making for excellent conditions. The afternoon sees the swell push to 7ft, with a cross-offshore wind keeping it clean. It's getting bigger, but still manageable for confident surfers.
Tuesday the 21st holds decent size, 7ft in the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong at 1632. But by the afternoon, the wind swings cross-shore, and it gets a bit messy. The quality drops off.
Then we hit a bit of a rough patch. From Wednesday the 22nd, the wind turns onshore and the swell gets big. Wednesday morning is 8ft but with a cross-onshore wind, making it choppy. By Thursday the 23rd, it's a monster 15ft – way too big for this break, with horrible cross-onshore wind. The energy reads 13252, which is massive, but it's unsurfable. This continues through Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th with 10ft to 13ft swell and strong cross-shore winds. The swell is too big for this spot, and conditions are poor.
Sunday the 26th sees the swell drop to 8ft, but the wind is still cross-shore and fresh, so it's only marginal at best. Monday the 27th is a write-off with onshore winds.
Now, there's a glimmer on Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell drops to 5ft, but it's a clean offshore wind from the NNW. The period is a long 14 seconds, and it's a SSW swell. Energy is moderate at 950. It's a smaller day, but for a point break with offshore wind, it'll be fun and clean. A good option for a quieter session.
The end of the month and into August gets messy again. The 29th and 30th have some size but cross-offshore winds, so it's clean but not perfect. By the 31st, the wind is a strong 40 km/h offshore, which is hard to paddle into, and the swell is small. The first of August is a total washout with 40 km/h cross-shore winds and a big, messy swell. The 2nd of August has a chance with a 8ft SW swell and a 16-second period, but the wind is cross-shore, making it average. The 3rd of August sees a 10ft swell with a very long 18-second period, but it's just too big for the break.
So, to wrap it up: your absolute best bet is Sunday the 19th of July, both morning and especially the afternoon glass-off. That's the one to book in. The following Tuesday and Wednesday mornings also offer some clean, smaller waves if you're happy to duck out during the week. The rest of the period is either too windy, too big, or both.
Rusty, signing off.
