The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer across the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch for surf around here. The whole 16-day window is one long quiet spell, with nothing but flat and tiny conditions on the cards. There are no real standouts, and the swell energy is basically non-existent.

The closest thing to a wave comes on Monday, the 10th of August, at Cabrera. The guidance suggests it’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, and exposed to the east-southeast, which is the direction the swell is coming from. We’re looking at a tiny 1ft to 2ft of swell, with a short period of 4 to 5 seconds, so it’s just weak, wind-slop, really. The combined swell energy is a measly (14 to 15), which is in the weak category. The morning of the 10th looks super clean, with a glassy, offshore wind from the north-northeast. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. But it’s still a tiny wave, and with the crowds listed as a possibility, it’s a very marginal call.

The rest of the period is a write-off. There are days with zero swell at all, little ripples of 0.3ft to 1.0ft from mixed directions, and often with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The only bright spots are the occasional glassy mornings, like on the 16th of August (Sunday) morning with a 1ft easterly wind-swell, and on the 17th of August (Monday) morning with a 2ft southeasterly swell and zero wind. But even then, the energy is weak (3 to 8), and the swell is too small and weak to be worth paddling out for.

Because the forecast is for fair to fairly consistent breaks, I’m a little hopeful that something might change, but right now, this is a genuine flat spell. If you’re a beginner, the Monday the 10th might be a fun little paddle if you’re desperate, but otherwise, the gear is staying in the shed.

Rusty.
