The Lowdown
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but La Rotonda is looking like a total write-off for the next 16 days. Not a single wave worth paddling for. The water temp is sitting at 80°F – that’s about 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you’ll be comfortable while you’re sitting there staring at flat lines.
The whole run from Friday 17 July right through to Saturday 1 August is a blank. Friday morning had a tiny 1.0ft ESE swell with a period of just 4 seconds and weak energy – cross‑on breeze, choppy. Afternoon the same story. Saturday and Sunday mornings turned glassy but with zero swell – flat as a lake. Monday morning was clean but still nothing. Tuesday through Thursday saw occasional 0.7–1ft pulses, but always with lousy period and poor wind. Even the glimmers on Friday 24 July – a glassy morning with a 0.7ft ENE swell at 8 seconds – only delivered minimal energy and the comment was “poor surf conditions.” The afternoon picked up a bit more energy but onshore wind ruined it.
The second week is no better. Saturday 25 July morning had a clean 1.0ft E swell at 6 seconds, but still negligible. Then it’s all cross‑shore and choppy, with nothing breaking properly. The last few days into August offer tiny pulses from the SSE – the optimum swell direction for La Rotonda – but the period is short and the combined energy never gets anywhere. For a spot that’s usually fairly consistent, this is a rough stretch. The few glassy windows have no swell, and when a little bump arrives the wind is either cross‑on or onshore. Honestly, it’s one of those times where you’re better off doing something else – the ocean just isn’t cooperating.
Keep an eye on the long‑range, because these blank runs tend to break eventually. But for now, there’s nothing to report.
