The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again.
Let’s cut to the chase. The first real surf on offer is at Busca Vida on Friday morning, 14 August. It’s a reef break, and we’ve got a clean 3 ft of south swell, period at 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, good energy. Water temp is about 79°, which is normal for the season. The wind is dead calm, glassy – that’s huge. The combined energy is 603 (moderate), and the forecast says very good surf. This is the one. The swell direction is right on the money for what this spot likes. Crowds are possible, so get in early. If you’re an intermediate surfer, this is your session.
After that, it’s a long, hard road. Friday afternoon the wind goes onshore, and the quality tanks. From Saturday the 15th, we’re looking at a solid stretch of poor conditions. Onshore winds, cross-onshore breezes, and short-period swell dominate. Sunday the 16th has a little more size, around 4 ft, but it’s onshore with rain showers – not worth it. Monday the 17th sees 6 ft, but with a fresh onshore wind and a period of just 7 seconds, that’s just choppy junk. The energy numbers are all over the place, but the surf quality is consistently poor. There’s no real recovery for the rest of the 16 days. A few mornings might be marginal, but nothing to get excited about.
So, one clear highlight: Friday morning, 14 August, at Busca Vida. Get it while it’s glassy. After that, pack it in.
Rusty.
