The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. We’re looking at a stretch where the waves just aren’t cooperating. The water’s sitting at a warm 79°, which is about normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s average.
The outlook starts with a bit of a flat spell. From Thursday morning, September 3rd, right through to the end of the forecast on September 18th, there’s not a single session that’s worth paddling out for. We’re talking a solid 16-day gap, give or take, with no recommendations. The wind is relentless, coming from the east and east-northeast, keeping things choppy and cross-onshore. The swell is mostly small, hovering around 3ft to 5ft, and the energy is weak. Even the models are showing combined energy values mostly in the low hundreds (299, 313, 291) – just not enough grunt to make anything decent.
The only break on the radar is Busca Vida, a reef setup. It’s fairly consistent and gets an S swell direction, but the waves we’re seeing are coming from the east and southeast, which isn’t its optimum. The swell period is short, between 6 and 10 seconds, which means weak, choppy lines. Even on September 10th, when the swell bumps up to 5ft, the wind is onshore and the quality is poor. It’s just not happening.
So, what’s the verdict? Honestly, if you’re a kiter, this setup might be more interesting than for a surfer. The wind is consistent and the surf is sloppy. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game. The forecasts can change, but for now, there’s nothing to get excited about. Keep the boards in the car and keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
