Ballyheigue Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Right, lads, Rusty here. Let's have a good look at what's on the cards for Ballyheigue over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, with some proper chunky swell on the way, but we've got to wade through a lot of messy conditions to get to the good stuff.

The pattern for the next few days is a write-off, honestly. We're looking at a solid start to the period, but Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th are a right-off. The swell is building through Monday with waves around 4.3 ft from the W, but that strong SSW wind is going to chop it up. The combined swell energy is moderate at 344, but the “poor surf conditions” tag says it all. Tuesday sees the swell jump up to 9.8 ft from the WNW, but with fresh onshore winds, that energy reading climbs to 1495, yet it’s all blown out. Wednesday the 16th is still messy with onshore winds and 7.9 ft of swell.

Thursday the 17th is a no-go – we're talking a powerful 14.8 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 12 seconds, but those fresh onshore winds are ruining it. That's a massive 6143 of energy, but it's not for us. Friday the 18th is more of the same, though the swell drops slightly.

Now, the first real glimmer of hope, and I mean a proper standout, is Sunday the 20th. Early morning, we’re looking at an absolute treat. The wind is going light and offshore from the ESE, and we’ve got a cracking 13.1 ft groundswell from the WNW with a long 14-second period. That's a massive 5804 reading of combined energy. The report says “exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers”, and I agree. That is proper, heavy, clean groundswell. For a beach and reef setup like Ballyheigue, this long period will really juice up the reef. This is the day for the crew who know what they're doing to get a serious session. After that, conditions go a bit downhill again for the rest of Sunday.

The next standout window opens on Tuesday the 22nd. Both morning and afternoon are looking excellent. The wind swings offshore from the ENE – light at 9.3 mph in the morning and very light at 6.2 mph in the afternoon. We’ve got a consistent 11.5 ft to 13.1 ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 10-11 seconds. The energy readings are high, 2864 and 3695, and the reports say “excellent surf for experienced surfers.” The afternoon session looks the pick of the two with that glassy, clean vibe.

Looking a bit further out, Thursday the 24th morning is another one to circle on the calendar. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SE, with an 8.2 ft swell from the WNW, but check this – the period is 16 seconds. That’s very long-period groundswell. The energy reading is 3548, and conditions are clean. It’s right in the wheelhouse for the reef here, but at that size and period, it’ll be a bit much for the beach breaks.

The rest of the second week has some smaller, cleaner windows, like Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th. Sunday morning the 27th is interesting – glassy conditions with an 11.5 ft WNW swell and a period of 10 seconds, giving a solid 2394 of energy. But by then, it’s further out and less certain.

So, for the overall best bet? I’d be locking in Sunday the 20th morning for the biggest, baddest, cleanest wave. The second standout is Tuesday the 22nd afternoon for a slightly more manageable size but still excellent, clean conditions.
