The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, let’s talk about the surf. It’s been a bit flat and quiet for the most part, but there are a couple of windows where it’ll all come together. I’m looking at the whole run for Anglet - La Barre, and honestly, you gotta be patient. The start of this stretch is pretty gutless. We’ve got small, weak waves through the 18th and 19th of August, with barely any energy—29 and 15 in the combined energy brackets, which is just nothing. The wind is glassy in the mornings, which is nice, but there’s no push to ride.
Thursday, August 20th sees the first real pulse of groundswell. That NW swell bumps up to about 4ft with an 11-second period, and the energy jumps into the moderate range at 304. The morning is clean with light SW wind and glassy conditions. This is a proper start, but the afternoon gets chopped by that NW cross-on breeze. It’s a bit of a tease, but the morning session is the one.
The swell peaks into Friday, August 21st, with 5ft of NW swell, still a 10-second period, and the energy number jumps again to 475, which we can start to call strong. But the wind is the story, and it’s not good. West wind in the morning, then a cross-shore 12 mph breeze in the afternoon, so it’s going to be messy. It’s powerful, but quality is gonna be all over the shop. Definitely not for beginners at that size.
The weekend gets smaller and a bit cleaner. By Saturday August 22nd, we’ve still got surfable waves around 4ft, and importantly, the wind goes offshore from the East. It’s not big, but it’s clean. The energy is down a bit to 241, but it’s rideable. Sunday August 23rd is similar, dropping to under 3ft, but that offshore wind is still there, making it look like a longboard kind of day.
Then it really dies. From Monday August 24th right through to Tuesday August 29th, it’s a poor run. The swell drops to under 3ft, the periods get short and weak, and the wind is mostly onshore or just not good. There are a few clean mornings in there, like Friday morning with a cross-off breeze, and that Sunday the 30th afternoon with a cross-off and solid waves around 5ft, which brings the energy back up to 347. That Sunday afternoon looks like the pick of the second week, but it’s still not a classic.
The real standout, the one you should circle on the calendar, is Tuesday, September 1st. The morning is small, but the afternoon is where it’s at. The swell jumps to 5ft, the period stretches out to a very long 11 seconds, and the energy maxes out at 595, which is strong. And with a light North wind that goes glassy, this is the cleanest, most powerful surf of the whole forecast. It’s a real groundswell, and it should be proper. Then Wednesday looks big too, with similar size, but the wind turns cross and then onshore, so it loses its shine quickly.
Also, the water’s running about 77°, which is more than three degrees warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a big anomaly. It’s like a bath out there, which is nice, but it’s worth knowing it’s not the average.
So, overall, it’s a slow start, a couple of fun days in the middle, and one standout afternoon on the 1st of September. For Anglet - La Barre, given the beach and jetty setup, the big 5ft+ days are better for the more experienced crew. And if you’re new to it all, stick to the smaller, glassy mornings like on the 20th.
That’s the picture from here. Get out there when it’s clean.
