The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Anglet - La Barre over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. The first few days are small and weak, nothing to get excited about. The real story starts to build for the end of the month and into September.

Saturday the 22nd kicks off with a tiny 4ft NW swell, but it’s got a bit of energy and clean offshore wind from the east. It’s surfable, but barely. The water temp is 77°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s super unusual, feels like a tropical bath. Sunday morning the 23rd drops right down to 2ft with glassy conditions, but it’s a weak NNW swell (period 7 seconds). Not much to work with.

We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, choppy, and onshore conditions through Monday and Tuesday. Honestly, it’s a washout. The wind is all over the place, and the swell is basically non-existent.

Then things get a little interesting on Wednesday the 26th morning. A clean 2ft from the WNW with a light offshore breeze. It’s small, but it’s clean. Still, not a standout.

Thursday the 27th sees a jump in size – 5ft from the WNW in the morning, and rising to 6ft by the afternoon. But the wind is onshore and choppy, and the energy is moderate. It’s messy, and the quality is poor. Friday the 28th is also a write-off with strong onshore winds and building swell.

Now, here’s where it gets good. The standout of the entire outlook is Saturday morning, the 29th of August. We’ve got a solid 8ft NW swell (10-second period, strong energy) and glassy conditions with a light easterly breeze. That’s the pick of the bunch. The water is still that warm anomaly. This is a proper clean swell, but at 8ft, it’s starting to get big for beginners. It’s a river/jetty break, which can handle a long-period groundswell nicely. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so on a Saturday morning with that kind of surf, expect company.

Sunday morning the 30th is still decent – 5ft from the NW with a clean offshore wind, but it’s a step down in energy. A good follow-up session.

The rest of the first week of September is a mixed bag. The 3rd of September (Thursday) shows a big 7ft to 8ft WNW groundswell (13-second period, very long period, strong energy) but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s going to be lumpy. That’s expert territory for size, but the wind is a problem. Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are even bigger (8ft) with strong onshore winds and stormy conditions – that’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle surfing. The period is long (12 seconds), so at a river mouth it could hold shape, but the wind will ruin it.

Overall, the best bet is Saturday morning the 29th of August. Get on it early before the afternoon wind messes it up. The Sunday the 30th is your backup. The second week has size but is battling wind and storms. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, but for now, that Saturday is the one.
