The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: the next 16 days are a flat, frustrating stretch for Anglet - La Barre. The only time the surf lifts its head above ordinary is right at the very end, and even then it’s nothing to write home about. We’re looking at a solid blank from now through to the 28th of July, with nothing but tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. The water is sitting at a balmy 76°, which is a full 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like bathwater.
The first sniff of anything surfable doesn’t show up until the morning of the 29th of July. That morning, the swell is a wobbly 2 ft from the NW, with a short period of 6 seconds and a weak combined energy of just 60 (moderate). The wind is glassy, though, coming from the ENE, so the surface will be clean. The wave comment is “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” scoring a 1 out of 10. It’s not good, but it’s the only day that’s even ridable. After that, the 30th of July offers glassy conditions again, but the swell drops to 1 ft, so it’s barely a ripple.
For the rest of the window, the swell hovers between 0.7 ft and 3 ft, with periods mostly under 8 seconds, and the wind is often cross-onshore or onshore, keeping the surface messy. The combined energy is weak, sitting under 100 for most of the run. This break is a river/jetty setup and inconsistent, so a long, quiet period like this isn’t unusual for the area. It’s not a total loss for kites, though – with the onshore winds and small, weak waves, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The one standout? If you’re desperate, the morning of the 29th is your best bet for a clean, tiny wave on the glass. It’s not a standout in any real sense – just the least bad option.
Rusty.
