The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Anglet - La Barre.
To be honest, the next week and a half is pretty flat and frustrating. There’s nothing worth paddling out for until we get to the end of July. From Sunday the 19th right through to the morning of Monday the 27th, the swell is tiny, all under 3 ft, with short-period windswell that’s mostly cross-onshore or onshore. The combined energy is weak, mostly under 100 (e.g. 22, 27, 88), and the water temperature anomaly is a massive 4° warmer than usual, so it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year. But that doesn’t help the surf. There’s a little window on Wednesday morning the 22nd and Friday morning the 24th where the wind goes glassy or cross-off, but the swell is just too small at 2 ft to 2 ft. It’s a long, quiet stretch.
Then we get a bit of life. On Monday the 27th, the swell starts to build, but it’s still cross-onshore and messy. The real window opens on Tuesday morning the 28th. That’s the standout. The swell jumps to 8 ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at 829. The wind is glassy, offshore, and it’s clean. That’s good, solid surf for those who know what they’re doing. The afternoon gets a bit cross-onshore and the swell pushes to 8 ft, period 10 seconds, and the energy rockets to 1363, but the wind spoils it a bit.
Wednesday morning the 29th is another cracker. Still 8 ft from the NW, 10-second period, combined energy is 1159, and the wind is cross-off from the ENE. That’s clean and powerful. This is a river/jetty break, and with that long-period groundswell, it’ll be lining up nicely, but it’s over 8 ft, so this is for experienced surfers only. Crowds are possible here, so expect company.
Thursday morning the 30th sees the swell drop to 5 ft from the NW, 8-second period, with offshore wind from the east. Combined energy is 313. That’s clean, more manageable, and a good option for a wider range of surfers.
The next few days into early August see the swell drop back to around 3 ft, with mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. There’s a glassy moment on Monday morning the 3rd of August with 3 ft swell from the NW, 9-second period, and energy at 145, but it’s ordinary. Not a standout.
So, the best on offer is Tuesday morning the 28th and Wednesday morning the 29th. Both are big, clean, and powerful. The 28th is glassy, the 29th is cross-off. Get on it if you can handle it.
Rusty.
