The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Anglet - La Barre over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is pretty grim. We’re looking at a solid 10-day stretch of almost nothing rideable. The swell is tiny, mostly 1ft to 2ft, with a messy, short-period windswell that’s just not gonna do anything for us. The wind is a problem too, mostly cross or onshore, keeping things choppy and blown out. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Thursday the 16th of July where it goes glassy, but with a 2ft swell and a 5-second period, it’s still barely a ripple. The water temperature is a massive 8° warmer than normal, which is very unusual for this time of year, but it won’t help the waves.
The waiting game ends around the morning of Friday the 24th of July. That’s when we finally see a pulse of energy. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits 316 (moderate), with a 2ft swell from the NW and a much longer period of 14 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the morning wind is light and cross-shore, making it look clean. It’s still small, but it’s the first real sign of life. The afternoon gets a bit messier as the wind swings cross-on, but the morning window is the pick.
The real standout, though, is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. The swell jumps up to 7ft from the WNW with an 11-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1018 (moderate to strong). That’s a proper amount of juice. The problem is the wind is onshore at 9 mph, which is going to put a chop on it. Still, this is the biggest swell of the whole run, and for the experts out there, it’s the best chance at a wave. The 7ft size is getting into the territory where beginners should sit this one out.
If you can hold out, the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July is a gift. The swell is still a solid 5ft from the NW, with a 9-second period, and the wind is light and glassy from the SW. The combined energy is 382 (moderate). The report says to expect good surf conditions, and I’d agree. That’s the cleanest, most user-friendly window of the whole period. The following morning, Wednesday the 29th, is also glassy with a 4ft swell, so there’s a little afterglow, but the wind tends to get cross-on by the afternoon.
So, the long and short of it is: endure the flat spell until the 24th, then keep your eyes on the 28th morning for the best combo of size and perfection. The 25th is for the big-wave crew only.
Rusty.
