The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Troia area over the next few weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet picture for the most part. We’ve got a long stretch of days where the ocean just isn’t offering much for a paddle, so let’s get into it.
The forecast opens with a few near-flat days. Thursday the 20th of August has a tiny 0.7ft swell from the SSW with a period of 4 seconds – that’s just wind slop, not even worth a look. The combined energy is a weak 2. Friday the 21st through to the end of the weekend is mostly flat, with some days showing zero swell. The wind swings around, but without any significant wave height, you’re just looking at a flat lake. This means we’re looking at a gap of several days with no real surf in the first week.
The real event, and the only thing that gets my heart beating a little, happens on Monday the 24th of August. We get a pulse of 6ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a solid head-high to slightly overhead wave. The combined energy hits 501, which is strong, so there’s real power in the water. However, the wind is onshore from the SW at 16 mph, which will chop it up. The break itself is Troia, a beginner spot that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s pushing into intermediate territory, and onshore wind will make it messy. It’s a beach-and-reef setup, and with that strong onshore wind and lumpy conditions, it looks more like a kite-surfing day than a good paddle session. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
After that pulse, it drops right back off. From Tuesday the 25th through to the end of the forecast, we’re back to tiny, weak swells of 0.3ft or 0.7ft, with combined energy below 25. The wind does go clean and cross-offshore from the north on a few days, but there’s just no wave to ride. The only standout here is that Monday the 24th, and even then, it’s a tough call because of the wind. If you have to get wet, that’s your window, but don’t expect perfection.
Rusty.
