The Lowdown
Well, folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the charts for our stretch of coast, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s a tough one to call.
We’re looking at a 16-day window that starts on Wednesday the 19th of August, and for the first several days, the ocean is basically flat. We’re talking about a run of poor surf conditions that stretches all the way through to the end of the month. The energy is weak, with combined swell energy readings barely hitting 20 or 30 (20 to 21), and the swell heights are sitting at a pathetic 0.7ft. There’s just nothing to get excited about. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, keeping things choppy and messy. It’s a bit of a blank run, and for this area, that’s not entirely unusual when the weather patterns settle in.
Now, the only real pulse of swell we see arrives on Friday the 21st of August. The afternoon brings a bit of a bump—a 5ft swell from the NW. That’s the biggest we’ll see in the whole period, but here’s the catch: the period is super short at 5 seconds, which means crumby, weak waves. The wind is howling out of the NW at 19 mph, straight cross-shore, and the combined energy sits at 126, which is moderate but messy. The conditions are lumpy and cross-chop. For a beach-and-reef setup like Troia, this is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing. It’s not a surfer’s day.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no need to worry about a wetsuit.
After that little blip, it’s back to dead flat and clean but surf-less conditions. We get a few days with zero swell height and zero energy, just glassy mornings and light breezes, but no waves to ride. It isn’t until Monday the 31st of August that we see the tiniest hint of life again—a 0.3ft groundswell from the south with a very long period of 18 seconds. That’s a whisper on the water, not a wave. The combined energy is a measly 6. The wind is finally offshore and clean, which is a tease, but there’s just no power.
The same story repeats into early September: small, weak south swells with long periods but no size. The energy readings are all below 10. The best morning is maybe Thursday the 3rd of September, when it’s glassy with a 1.0ft SSW swell, but with a period of only 3 seconds, it’s just a ripple.
So, the honest truth: there’s no standout surf in this window. The only noteworthy day is Friday the 21st of August, but that’s a windy, short-period mess. Everything else is flat or near flat. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find a knee-high ripple on a glassy morning, but for real waves, I’d be looking at other plans.
Rusty.
