The Lowdown
Alright, mate, let’s talk Trevone Bay. It’s a tough run ahead. The water’s sitting at 66°F, which is more than 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s a real treat for the skin, but the waves are not playing ball.
The whole 16-day stretch is a long grind. There’s a big gap of days with barely anything rideable, and even when the swell shows up, the wind is usually blowing the wrong way. The first real chance comes around Thursday 27th August, and even then it’s a marginal call.
Thursday morning the 27th: we’ve got a 3ft swell from the west with a 10-second period, and the wind is offshore from the southeast at 16 mph. That’s clean, and the combined energy is moderate (249). It’s surfable, but ordinary—nothing to get excited about. Thursday afternoon the wind goes cross-offshore from the south, the swell pushes to 5ft from the west, and the energy bumps up to 420. Still, the guidance says it’s marginal, so don’t expect a classic.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions through the end of August and into the start of September. The first week of September sees a bit more size—7ft from the west on the 1st and 2nd—but cross-onshore winds ruin the surface. Not worth paddling out unless you’re into lumpy, choppy slop.
Then, look ahead to Thursday 3rd September. That morning shows a 4ft west-southwest swell with a 9-second period, cross-offshore winds from the southeast at 16 mph, and clean conditions. The afternoon really catches the eye: 8ft from the west-southwest, period still 9 seconds, but the energy jumps to 1304—strong wave energy. Winds are fresh cross-offshore at 19 mph so it’ll be clean. That’s big, punchy groundswell, and for experts only. If you’ve got the skills and you’ve been waiting for something meaty, that Thursday afternoon looks like the standout, but it’s a long way off and the confidence is lower.
Don’t expect much consistency. Trevone Bay is fairly exposed to the west-northwest, and the optimum swell direction is west-northwest, which we do get, but the wind keeps letting us down. On the plus side, the crowds are only sometimes a problem here, so if you pick your window right, you might have it to yourself.
For the most part, this setup looks like it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially with the stronger winds and cross-onshore slop.
