The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what Trevone Bay is looking like over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be honest, it's a pretty quiet spell for the most part.
We're looking at a long dry run from Sunday the 23rd of August all the way through the end of the month. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and when it does show a pulse, the wind is all wrong – howling onshore or cross-onshore, churning it up. The combined energy is mostly in the low double digits or barely scraping triple digits, which means there's just nothing behind it. You'd be better off staying home and checking the wax collection.
The first week of September brings a glimmer of hope. Monday the 31st of August morning sees a light offshore breeze with a clean 3ft swell from the WSW. The energy is still modest at 141, but it's rideable. Then that afternoon, the wind goes glassy. For a moment, Trevone Bay looks like it could offer a fun little wave, but it's still small at 3ft.
The real standout, however, is Thursday the 3rd of September and Friday the 4th of September. Thursday morning we get a solid 5ft swell from the west with a light cross-offshore breeze from the south. The combined energy is up to 279, which is moderate, and the conditions are clean. That's the best we've seen in a long time. Friday morning is even better for the more experienced crew – 5ft of west swell at 9 seconds, with a gentle cross-offshore breeze and a combined energy of 423. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Be aware though, Trevone Bay is a fairly exposed spot and for a beginner, that 5ft might be a bit of a handful. On the 3rd, with the swell hitting 5ft, it's pushing the limit for less experienced paddlers. The swell direction is coming from the west, which is bang on the optimum for this spot, so it should be well-shaped. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have company.
After that, it goes downhill again into the second week. Saturday the 5th gets messy with fresh cross-shore winds, and by Sunday the 6th we're looking at a strong onshore mess with a big 7ft to 8ft swell. That's expert territory, but the wind is so bad it's mostly just a washing machine. The combined energy on Sunday afternoon hits a massive 1027, but with a cross-offshore wind, it's still a bit of a gamble. Honestly, for the weekend of the 6th, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
All in all, mark your calendar for Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September. Those are the bright spots in an otherwise quiet window.
Rusty.
