Rusty here. Let’s talk about what's heading our way.
For the first week or so, it’s a proper dry spell. There’s a long quiet period ahead, with nothing really rideable until a very brief window on Thursday, July 9th, and even that’s just barely.
The first tiny glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Thursday, July 9th, at Trevone Bay. The swell is only 2ft from the west, with a period of 9 seconds, giving it a weak energy reading of 83. The wind is a light offshore from the southeast, which will keep the surface clean. It’s a beginner-friendly spot and fairly consistent, so if you’re keen for a paddle, it’s something. The crowds can show up sometimes, so don’t expect solitude.
The real standout, though, is the afternoon of Friday, July 10th. The swell is tiny at 2ft from the west, but the wind is glassy – dead calm from the northeast at just 3 mph. That’s huge for clean surf. The energy is still weak at 79, and the period is a short 9 seconds, so you’ll get small, weak waves, but they’ll be clean and smooth. For a longboard or a soft-top, that’s the best we’ve got.
After that, it’s back to nothing good for days. From around July 11th right through to July 17th, it’s all tiny chop, cross-onshore winds, and poor conditions. On Tuesday, July 14th, the swell bumps to 3ft from the west with an 11-second period, giving a moderate energy of 264, and the wind is cross-off from the east at 16 mph, so it’s clean. But it’s still scored as poor, and with that longer period, it’ll break a bit straight at a beach break.
Then, on Saturday, July 18th, we get a spike. The morning shows 6ft swell from the west-southwest, with a short 8-second period, and the energy jumps to a strong 479. By the afternoon, it’s 7ft from the same direction, with a 10-second period, and the energy is a huge 904 – that’s very strong. The wind is offshore from the north-northwest at 9 mph, so it’s clean. But at over 8ft, this is only for experts. The short period means it’ll be a chunky, messy wall, but the raw power is there for those who can handle it.
Bottom line: the best session is that tiny glassy afternoon on Friday, July 10th. For the big stuff on the 18th, it’s for the experienced crew only and the quality is a question mark.
Rusty.
