The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll level with you. The next 16 days at Trevone Bay (Cornwall) are looking flat and frustrating. There’s no real reason to get excited. The best we’ve got are a few clean but tiny windows, and nothing that’ll make you rush to the water.
The first week is a real dud. Starting Monday the 13th, the swell is puny, and the wind is all over the place. The water is way warmer than it should be for July, at 19° (about 3° warmer than average), so it’s weirdly warm, but that’s the only thing going for it. The wave energy is weak, staying under 100 for most of the week.
Tuesday the 14th afternoon is the closest we come to a highlight. The wind goes glassy, and a very long-period 18-second groundswell rolls in, but it’s only 0.2m. The energy is 71. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to catch. A real letdown.
From Wednesday the 15th through to the 22nd, it’s a string of poor conditions. Cross-shore and cross-onshore winds, tiny 0.3m to 0.7m waves, and the wind is often moderate, making it choppy. The swell energy stays low, mostly in the 20s to 60s. The morning of Wednesday the 22nd has glassy wind again, with a 0.6m swell from the west at 9 seconds, but it’s still ordinary. Not worth the paddle.
Then on Thursday the 23rd, we get a strong offshore wind from the southeast at 40 km/h. The swell is still only 0.6m from the west, with a 9-second period and 65 energy. The wind cleans the surface, but it’s so strong it’ll be hard to paddle out and catch anything. A tough one for anyone.
The final weekend, July 24th to 25th, sees a bump in swell size. On Friday the 24th afternoon, the swell hits 1.3m from the west-southwest, with a short 7-second period, and the energy is 213 (moderate). But the wind is cross-onshore at 25 km/h, making it choppy. Saturday the 25th afternoon has a 1.4m swell from the west, 7-second period, and 183 energy, but again, cross-onshore wind. It’s bigger, but it’s messy. For a beginner, that’s getting a bit much. For experts, it’s not worth it with the chop.
After that, the 26th to 28th is clean with cross-offshore winds, but the swell drops back to 0.7m to 1.2m, and the energy falls to the 60s and low 100s. The wind is strong, up to 45 km/h, so it’s clean but blown out.
There’s no standout day in this 16-day window. The best of a bad bunch is the afternoon of the 14th for the glassy conditions, but it’s too small. The morning of the 23rd has the right wind, but the swell is tiny and the wind is too strong. For size, the 24th-25th have some energy, but the wind ruins it. Nothing to write home about.
If you’re stubborn, watch the 24th-25th for size, but don’t hold your breath. The cross-shore wind and chop might make it more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
