The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what we've got coming up at Trevone Bay. I'll be straight with you – the next two weeks are looking a bit of a write-off for quality waves. We're in for a long stretch of onshore and cross-offshore winds that are just going to trash the surface. The water is sitting at 67°F and it's much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a rare thing, but that's about the only thing to get excited about in the near term.
The pattern kicks off from Sunday the 16th. Tiny, weak stuff with a 1ft swell from the west at a short 7 seconds, and it's already got a NW wind on it. It's a no-go. Monday the 17th isn't any better – we get a slight bump to 3ft from the WNW, but the wind is still on it and the energy is only weak (104). That theme just drags on. Day after day, we get that cross-onshore wind. Tuesday the 18th has 4ft at 6 seconds (145), Wednesday the 19th sees a jump to 6ft and then 7ft with energy climbing into the moderate range (303 and 437), but the wind is fresh and cross-onshore, making everything lumpy and choppy. This is not paddle-surfing weather. Honestly, with the wind and the beach setup, this whole stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone on a shortboard.
We get a bit of a break around Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd where the swell drops right off to 1ft and 2ft, with the wind shifting cross-shore, but there's just no power in the water. By Monday the 24th, we're down to 1.0ft and the swell period is all over the place, including a 14-second groundswell from the SW that's just too weak to do anything with (energy of 19). That long period is a tease. The first real sign of life comes mid-week, on Wednesday the 26th. The morning shows 2ft from the west with a 9-second period and a NW wind that's offshore (137), but the wave energy is still just weak and the size is tiny. That afternoon, it picks up to 4ft but the wind goes cross-onshore again.
The most notable event, and really the only one to keep an eye on, is coming up at the end of the month. On Saturday the 29th of August, the afternoon sees a proper surge: a 10ft swell from the west with a 9-second period and very strong energy (1366). That's a lot of water. But, and it's a big but, the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 22 mph. That much swell is only for experts anyway, over 8ft, and with a messy, lumpy wind on it, it's going to be a battle. The day before, Friday the 28th, has similar issues with strong winds and 5ft swell. There's just no clean window in the entire 16-day run. The forecast confidence is high for the next week that it's poor, and the long-range stuff looks promising in size but the wind always seems to spoil it.
So, honestly, there's no standout session here. I can't point to a morning where the stars align. Trevone Bay is a fairly exposed spot, and we just aren't catching a break. Sometimes it's like this. The surf is poor, period. Keep the boards in the car, but don't be surprised if the forecasts shift for the better – it can't stay this messy forever. We'll be watching.
Rusty.
