The Lowdown
Oi, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Trevone Bay has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the first few days are looking pretty average. We've got some small swell rolling in, but nothing that's going to get the heart pumping. The winds are mostly cross-off or light enough that the water will be clean, but the waves are tiny, around `0.7ft` to `2ft` from the W or WSW. The energy is low (96 to just 33), so you'll be bobbing around more than surfing. The water temperature feels about average for this time of year.
There's a proper wait for the good stuff. We’ve got a long gap with no recommendations until we get to Thursday the 27th of August. That morning, the swell jumps right up to `10ft` from the W, and the energy reading goes through the roof (1331). The wind is a light cross-off, so it should be clean, but this is too big for this spot – that's expert-only territory and even then, it's pushing it. That afternoon the wind swings cross-on and it gets messy.
The swell hangs around in the `7ft` to `10ft` range for a few days, but the wind is a problem. It's mostly cross-on or onshore, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. The energy is strong (544 to 1026), but the quality isn't there for a paddle board.
The one that stands out is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning has a `7ft` WSW swell with a clean cross-off wind (749 energy). It's getting bigger. The afternoon is even better, with a `8ft` W swell, still clean under a cross-off breeze, and the energy jumps to 1630. This is the pick of the fortnight – a solid, clean swell with enough punch for a good session if you're comfortable in that size.
Don't get too excited about Thursday the 3rd of September. It's huge again, `10ft` from the W with very long period (11 seconds) and massive energy (2423), but it's simply too big for Trevone Bay. That kind of long-period groundswell needs a point break or a reef, not this setup.
After that, it drops off. Friday the 4th of September is `7ft` but the wind is onshore and messy, and it stays that way with smaller, choppy waves through to the end of the forecast.
So in a nutshell: if you've got patience, wait for the Wednesday the 2nd of September. That's your window for a proper surf. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big for the break.
Rusty.
