The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks at Trevone Bay. I’ll be straight with you: it’s a rough start. The first few days are a write-off. We’ve got some swell, but it’s coming in with a cross-onshore wind that’s just trashing it. The water is sitting at 66°F which is much warmer than usual for the time of year, so that’s a weird bonus, but the waves are a mess.
The first glimmer of hope doesn’t come until the morning of Saturday, 22 August. The wind drops right off, going glassy, and the water gets clean. It’s only a tiny wave though, about 1ft from the west with a 10-second period. The combined energy is weak (55), so you’re looking at a small, clean, glassy session for the longboard or a foamie. It’s a beginner-friendly spot anyway, and on a Saturday morning with that kind of calm, you might have a few others out. Crowds are possible.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions again for several days. The swell tries to pick up, but the wind stays nasty. The true standout of the whole 16-day window is Tuesday, 25 August. The morning delivers a solid 8ft swell from the west-southwest, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind swings offshore from the SSE, blowing at 19 mph. That’s fresh offshore and clean. The combined energy is strong (845). Now, 8ft is getting into expert territory, but for the experienced crew, this is the one to circle on the calendar. The afternoon still holds at 6ft with the same offshore wind, but the energy drops to moderate (390). It’s the best wave of the period by a long shot.
The rest of the week sees a mix of clean but small surf and some onshore junk. The morning of Thursday, 27 August goes glassy again with a 5ft swell from the west-southwest, but the period is short (7 seconds), so the energy is modest (264). It’s surfable, but nothing special. The swell direction is west-northwest, which is the optimum for Trevone Bay, but the wind is rarely on our side.
Into the second week, things get quiet. The morning of Saturday, 29 August is glassy, but with a tiny 3ft swell and weak energy (119). After that, it’s mostly small, poor waves with a cross-offshore wind on the 30th and 31st, but the swell is too small to get excited about (1ft to 2ft). The first of September brings a pulse of 6ft in the afternoon, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy again.
So, I’ll say it plain: Saturday 22 August for a glassy, small longboard session, or Tuesday 25 August for the big, clean, offshore wave that’s got some real power. Don’t waste your time on the rest.
Rusty.
