The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Trevone Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a grim stretch. The swell shows up, but it’s nearly always let down by the wind. The best I can say is that there are a few fleeting windows of cleanish conditions, but nothing even close to a standout. You’ll be left scratching your head, wondering if this spot is ever going to fire properly. There are no real standouts here, so don't get your hopes up for any sort of proper session.
The only window that even looks surfable is a brief period on the morning of August 22. You’re looking at a tiny 2ft swell from the W with a period of 10 seconds off a light ENE breeze that’s cross-offshore. It’ll be clean, but it’s just not got any punch. The combined energy is a measly 118, which is weak as dishwater. It’s a beginner-friendly wave at best, and even then you’ll want a longboard. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have a few others scratching around with you, but honestly, it’s hardly worth the effort. The water temperature is 66°, which is about 4° warmer than usual for this time of year—that much warmer is notable, so you might get away with a shorty if you’re keen.
Then the window slams shut again. You’ll get a clean, glassy morning on August 27 with a 3ft W swell, but the combined energy is only 177 and the overall conditions are just described as “ordinary.” After that, it’s a long, bleak gap. On August 29, the swell jumps to a 7ft from the W, but the wind is onshore at 15 mph, so it’ll be a lumpy, wind-blown mess, likely just for the experts if anyone is mad enough to try.
That same ugly pattern repeats into September. You get a bit of a bump on September 3 with a 7ft W swell, but the wind is screaming at 34 mph from the SW. That’s a near-gale with messy cross-chop; it’s more dangerous than surfable. The 5ft swell on September 4 has a cross-onshore breeze, which again just ruins it.
Forget about the second week—it’s a write-off. Flat, blown out, or both. There’s just nothing here.
It’s a real shame, but this is one of those stretches where you’d be better off doing something else. Wait for the forecasts to change. It can’t stay this poor for long.
