The Lowdown

Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. It’s a tough stretch ahead for Tregastel Plage. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty bleak, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. There’s just no proper swell lining up with clean winds. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing on offer for the most part.

Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. From Friday the 21st through to the 30th, there is no surf worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, weak, and all over the place – we’re talking ankle-biters with no push. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, making things messy and lumpy. The water temp is sitting at 66°F with a slight positive anomaly, so it’s just about average for this time of year, nothing special. It’s a frustrating start, no two ways about it.

There’s a small window of hope on Monday morning, the 31st of August. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind goes light and cross-offshore, making for a clean surface. The combined energy is moderate at 371. Finally, some clean lines! But it’s a fleeting moment. By the afternoon, the wind swings cross-onshore and it all falls apart.

Then we go back into the doldrums. The first week of September is more of the same – tiny surf, bad winds, and not a single call worth making. The energy drops right off.

The only other time things look like they might have a pulse is on Thursday the 3rd of September. The swell jumps to 7ft from the WNW, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the wind is onshore. It’s a messy, blown-out 7ft, which is just a washing machine. That’s not a surf forecast, that’s a novelty act.

So, to be honest, this is a blank run. There are no standouts here. We’d be scraping the barrel to find a wave on Monday morning, but that’s your best bet. It’s a period where it’s not going to stay poor forever, the ocean can change quickly, but as it stands, you’re better off finding something else to do. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath. This is one of those times where a flat spell is just normal for the area.

Rusty out.
