The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on Trestraou for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, this is a rough start. Right from Thursday the 16th, we’re looking at a string of days with tiny, short-period swell and wind that’s mostly cross or onshore, making a mess of things. For the first week, most of the surf is under 2 feet, with periods around 4 or 5 seconds. The combined wave energy is below 100, which is weak, so there’s no push. The best on that first stretch is a little 3-foot pulse from the NE on the 16th, but with a 5-second period and a 12 mph northerly onshore wind, it’s just choppy and messy.
The weekend and early next week don’t offer much relief. Sunday the 19th sees a bump to about 3 feet from the NE, but a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind makes it lumpy. Monday is similar, around 2-3 feet, and the wind stays in the way. The swell direction is mostly off the NE or ENE, not Trestraou’s preferred WNW, so the break is sheltered from the best of it. The energy stays weak, in the 20-44 range.
Now, heading into the second week, conditions finally shift. On July 26th, the wind turns to the west and blows 28 mph, but it’s cross-offshore, and the sea cleans up. We get a 2-foot west swell with an 11-second period, and the energy hits 86. It’s still small, but that clean, lined-up 2-footer with offshore wind is a sneaky good option if you’re on a longboard or a fish.
That clean trend holds through the 27th with 2-foot west swell and cross-off wind, energy at 70. Then things get serious. The 28th is on the rise with 3-foot WNW swell and an 8-second period, but the wind goes cross-onshore, and the energy is 114. The real standout is July 29th: a solid 6- to 7-foot west swell rolls in, with a 9-second period and a light north onshore wind. The combined energy is 586, which is strong. Over 5 feet, this is getting into intermediate-to-expert territory, and Trestraou will be handling some size. Thursday the 30th still has 5-foot west swell in the morning, energy 430, and a light cross-on breeze from the NNW. Friday the 31st wraps it up with 6- to 7-foot WNW swell, 8-second period, and energy at 472, but with a gentle cross-onshore wind.
So the first ten days or so are a bust – tiny, weak, onshore junk. The last few days deliver proper size and energy, but the wind is a factor, and the west swell is wrapping into a sheltered break. For the experienced crew, the end of the window holds the most promise, but it’s a long wait.
Keep your eyes on the charts.
Rusty.
