Alright, let’s get real about Trestraou. It’s gonna be a slow burn for the next week and a half. The surf is small, and the conditions are mostly messy. We’re looking at a run of days with barely rideable waves, a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind, and just poor quality all round. Honestly, if you’re itching to paddle out, you’d be better off waiting. There’s a real gap here from the start of July 5th right through until about mid-month before anything interesting shows up on the horizon.
For the first week, from July 5th, the swell is tiny, barely scraping 2 ft to 3 ft. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, with only a few brief moments of glass on Monday morning, July 6th, but the swell is still only 3 ft from the WNW and the energy is weak (108). That’s about as good as it gets early on, but it’s still ‘poor surf conditions’. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 64°F.
You’ve got a few mornings with cleaner conditions, like Friday the 10th with a light cross-offshore breeze and a 3 ft WNW swell, but the combined energy is still low (141). Saturday the 11th morning is glassy again with a bit more size at 4 ft, but period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly.
The real standout is much further out. Look at July 17th and 18th. On Friday the 17th, we see a pulse of swell building. The afternoon shows a strong jump in size to 3 ft, but the period is a solid 12 seconds from the WNW, and the combined energy hits 394. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is cross-shore and fresh, so it’ll be lumpy, but there is real power in the water.
Then, Saturday the 18th morning is the one to circle on your calendar. The swell hits 4 ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a very respectable 352. What makes this special is the wind: strong and offshore from the WNW at 6 mph, keeping it clean. This is the best on offer in the whole 16 days – a decent sized, clean, lined-up NW swell. The wind is offshore and light, so it’ll be glassy. The break is sheltered from the WNW, so this is exactly what it’s built for. Crowds are sometimes here, so you might have some company on a good morning like this.
Keep an eye on July 20th as well. Monday morning shows a big spike in raw energy: 8 ft from the WNW with combined energy hitting a massive 1001. But the wind is howling at 25 mph, cross-shore and messy. For most, that’s a kitesurfing kind of day. Only serious experts would touch that if the wind drops.
So, bottom line: the next week and a half is a write-off. But the weekend of the 18th and 19th of July has one real gem – Saturday morning the 18th at Trestraou with a clean, 4 ft WNW swell.
