The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I’ll be honest with you – this next week and a half is a bit of a write-off for Trestraou. The surf is going to be flat or tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, and the conditions are just messy. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf, with nothing worth paddling out for from Saturday the 18th of July all the way through to late in the week of the 27th. There’s a real gap there, so don’t be holding your breath.
The only real window of interest shows up on Sunday the 26th of July. The swell bumps up to a solid 7 ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits 462 (moderate wave energy), which is the biggest energy we see in the whole forecast. The wind is cross-offshore from the SW and that makes for clean conditions. The swell is getting a bit big for beginners, but for the confident crew, this is the best we’ve got. However, don’t get too excited about the shape – a short period (8 seconds) swell like this can be a bit walled up and wonky at a beach break like Trestraou. It’s still the standout slot.
The next day, Monday the 27th of July, is still worth a look. The swell drops back to 4 ft but the period stretches to 9 seconds, and the wind is still clean and cross-offshore from the W. The energy is moderate at 262 (moderate wave energy). It’s a smaller, cleaner option if Sunday feels too big.
The water temperature sits at 64°F, with a tiny anomaly of 1°F, so it’s pretty much average for the time of year. Nothing wild there.
Later in the forecast, on Thursday the 30th of July, there’s a moment where the swell is 5 ft and the wind goes glassy from the W. The period is still short at 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 298 (moderate wave energy). The conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so it’s not a standout, but it might be the only other chance to get wet without getting blown out.
Overall, don’t be expecting much. The best we’ve got is that Sunday the 26th of July with the biggest swell and clean wind. The rest of the week is a paddling event at best.
Rusty.
