The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks at Trestraou are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of small, messy, and onshore conditions ahead, so don’t get your hopes up for anything decent until we get deep into the second week. The swell energy is weak to moderate for most of this period, with readings mostly in the 100s and low 500s (143-530) range, and the wind is just never your friend. It’s a waiting game.
The first few days, from Tuesday the 18th through the weekend, are a total loss. We’ve got cross-off winds, but the swell is just too weak and short-period, barely scraping 3ft to 5ft with periods of 6-9 seconds. It’s clean-looking, but there’s just no push. The energy is weak to moderate (96-300) and it’s just not worth paddling out for. Then Thursday and Friday the wind swings onshore and it gets choppy and lumpy, and the swell drops right off. This run of poor conditions looks set to continue right through the 31st. Don't bother.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. We’ve got a standout window arriving on Tuesday, the 1st of September. After all that junk, a proper groundswell shows up. Tuesday morning is looking like the pick of the entire forecast. The swell jumps to a solid 8ft from the WNW with a long 11-second period, and the energy is reading a massive 1756, which is strong to very strong. The wind is light and offshore from the SW, leaving it glassy and clean. This is a proper session. This is not for beginners, this is for the crew who want a proper, powerful wave. It’s going to be big and lined up. Get on it.
The afternoon of the 1st will still have size, around 8ft, but the wind goes light cross-onshore, so it’ll get a little bumpy. And then Wednesday the 2nd still holds some promise with a 7ft WNW swell and a moderate offshore wind, keeping the waves clean. This is your second good window, but Tuesday morning is the one to circle on the calendar. It's a long way out, so treat it as a promising bet, not a certainty, but all the signs are pointing to a proper day.
For what it’s worth, the water is about average for this time of year, nothing wild on the temperature front. The breaks are sheltered, so they might handle the size a bit better, but it’s still gonna be a heavy one.
So, save your energy for that first day of September. It’s going to be worth the wait.
Rusty.
