The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Trestraou.
The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak overall, and honestly, there’s nothing much to get excited about for a while. The first bit of any real swell is a long way off. We’ve got some small, short-period, wind-affected waves for most of the period, so don’t expect any fireworks.
Right now, through the first week, everything is a write-off. Tuesday the 14th has tiny swell with a 12s period, but it’s cross-on from the ENE at 15 mph, and the wave energy is way down at 13 – just weak, poor surf. That theme sticks around. Wednesday and Thursday offer some knee-high lumps from the NE, but the period is a shocking 5-6 seconds, and winds are onshore or cross-on. The combined swell energy sits in the 50-70 range (weak). Friday and Saturday aren’t any better. All in all, we’re looking at about 10 days of nothing surfable.
Forget the first week. The only glimmer on the horizon, and it’s a tentative one, is the end of the second week. Around Monday the 27th of July, we see the swell start to build. It’s coming from the WNW, with face heights around 6 ft and a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps into the 600s (strong). The catch? The wind is cross and fresh at 19 mph, making it lumpy. It’s big and powerful, over 5 ft so not for beginners, but with that cross-shore breeze, it’s only going to suit experienced crew.
The real standout, if the forecast holds, is Tuesday the 28th of July. By the afternoon, we see clean, cross-offshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph, a solid 6 ft swell from the W, with a 9-second period and strong energy (458). This is your best bet. The break is Trestraou. The water temp is 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home. The optimum swell direction for Trestraou is WNW, so this W swell is a good match. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so be ready for company if it fires.
Wednesday the 29th of July morning gets even bigger, with an 8 ft swell from the W and energy through the roof at 1092, but that’s only for experts, and with 12 mph cross-off winds it might be tricky to manage. The afternoon cleans up but the wind jumps to 22 mph.
So, to be honest, there’s a long, flat gap of about 10 days before we even have a chance. Wait it out, and keep an eye on that Tuesday the 28th window. It’s the one to aim for.
Rusty.
