The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking over the charts for the next couple of weeks. It’s a pretty grim run for the most part, with a lot of slop and wind issues, so don’t get your hopes up too early. There’s a bit of a tease right at the end if you’re patient.
First up, Towradgi is a reef setup that’s very consistent and exposed to the south-east, which is the direction it really wants. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
The coming days are a write-off. Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th are a complete mess – light rain and cross-onshore winds, with weak little waves and combined energy sitting around 125 to 202 (moderate). The surf is tiny and choppy, not worth paddling out for. Thursday 20th morning cleans up a bit with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is only 2ft from the ESE at 8 seconds, and the energy is weak at 60 – just small, ordinary waves. That afternoon is similar, 2ft from the east at 6 seconds, energy at 68 (weak). It’s surfable but nothing to write home about.
Friday 21st through to Sunday 23rd are all poor. The swell drops right off on Friday (2ft, ENE, 6 seconds, energy 32 – weak), and the wind is all over the place. Saturday 22nd is barely a ripple, with 1ft from the NE. Sunday 23rd sees a spike in energy to 152 (moderate) on the morning, but it’s from the SSE at 8 seconds with a cross wind – still poor.
Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th start to show a bit more push, but the wind is the enemy. Monday morning has clean conditions with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is 3ft from the south at 9 seconds, energy 134 (moderate) – still only ordinary at best. Tuesday 25th picks up energy to 320 (strong) in the morning and 359 (strong) in the afternoon, with a 3ft south swell, period stretching to 10 then 12 seconds, but it’s all cross-shore wind and choppy. The quality is poor.
Now, Wednesday 26th morning is the first time you might want to look at the water. The swell is 4ft from the south at 11 seconds, with a combined energy of 395 (strong) – that’s a decent groundswell. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit bumpy, but the sets will have some push. It’s marked as marginal, though, so not a stand-out.
Thursday 27th to Saturday 29th is a mixed bag of poor conditions again, with cross-winds and lumpy seas. The only real highlight arrives on Sunday 30th August. The morning session has a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSW, 3ft of SSE swell at 12 seconds, and the combined energy is 351 (strong). The report says “expect good surf conditions” – that’s your best bet in the whole run. It’s a clean, long-period groundswell, so the reef at Towradgi should offer some proper lines. The waves are only around 3ft, but the period and energy make them worthwhile.
Monday 31st August morning has a bigger 6ft south swell at 11 seconds, energy 699 (strong), but it’s a cross wind, so the quality is only marginal. The size is getting up there – over 5ft – so it’s not for beginners, and the cross wind will chop it up. The afternoon gets worse with a strong onshore.
Tuesday 1st September and Wednesday 2nd September are back to small, ordinary stuff with weak energy. The standout is clearly the Sunday 30th August morning – the cleanest conditions, a decent long-period groundswell, and the energy is solid. Towradgi is a reef that can handle a long period swell, so it should shape up nicely. It’s a consistent spot, but it can have crowds sometimes, so get in early.
So, overall, you’ve got a long gap of poor surf from now until the 30th. The best wave is on Sunday 30th August morning. Keep your fingers crossed the forecast holds.
Rusty.
