The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s the surf outlook for the next 16 days out of Towradgi. I’ll be straight with you—this one’s a slow burn, with a fair bit of flat and ordinary stuff in the first week, but there’s a proper late-season groundswell worth waiting for if you’ve got the patience.
Right now, there’s no real surf to speak of. The first recommendation we get ain’t until Thursday the 20th of August, and even then, it’s barely a whisper. The early part of the week is a write-off: Tuesday the 18th gives us a tiny 1 ft cross-on bump from the ESE with only 166 (moderate energy) and a score that says “don’t bother.” Wednesday the 19th is messy too—2 ft on the morning, jumping to 4 ft by afternoon but with a stiff 15 mph cross-on wind from the NE, choppy as all hell. That’s all poor surf conditions.
Thursday the 20th of August finally gives us something to look at. The morning is still crummy—4 ft from the NE with a short 6-second period and cross winds—but by Thursday afternoon, the wind swings to a light NNW at 3 mph, giving us a clean, cross-off vibe. The swell drops to 3 ft from the NE, period still short at 6 seconds, and energy is weak at 79. It’s “surfable but very ordinary,” so if you’re desperate, you could get a few crumbly little ones. But it’s not worth getting excited about.
Friday the 21st of August is similar—clean in the morning with a light offshore WSW at 6 mph, swell at 3 ft from the ENE, period 7 seconds, energy down to 53. Still ordinary. The afternoon gets a bit of light rain, but the swell drops to 2 ft. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are more of the same: tiny, weak, and mostly cross-on or cross. A few moments of glassy or clean conditions, like Monday the 24th afternoon with 2 ft from the south at 10 seconds and glassy wind, but the energy is only 75 and the waves are small. It’s a long stretch of “meh.”
Now, the real standout arrives on Sunday the 30th of August. This is the one I’m talking about. We get a solid 7 ft swell from the SSE, with a very long period of 18 seconds and a massive energy reading of 4094—that’s serious power. The wind is a light southerly at 3 mph, barely a breath, so it’s clean with just small ripples. This is a proper groundswell. The water temp is about 64°F, which is 1°F warmer than usual for this time of year—nothing crazy, just a touch above average for Towradgi. Keep in mind, with that long period, it’ll break a bit straight on the beach, so higher tide might be your friend. The score is a decent 4, but the combo of size, period, and clean conditions makes this the best on offer. It’s a big swell—over 8 ft by Sunday afternoon, up to 8 ft from the SSE at 14 seconds and 2811 energy—so this is expert territory. Beginners, stay out of the water that day.
Monday the 31st of August drops a bit, with 6 ft from the SSE at 11 seconds, but the wind goes cross-on and chop picks up. Tuesday the 1st of September is 4 ft, but again cross-on and messy. After that, it fades back to tiny stuff.
So, bottom line: if you’ve got the skills and the patience, aim for Sunday the 30th of August. That’s the highlight. The rest of the run is mostly small and ordinary, with a few clean windows but nothing to write home about. This is a reef break, very consistent, so it’s usually reliable, but the swell just isn’t there for most of the window. The SSE direction is a good match for the optimum SE direction, so that helps.
I’m Rusty, signing off.
