The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. This is Rusty.
We're looking at Towradgi, and to be real with you, the next 16 days are a bit of a mixed bag. There's some decent energy coming, but you've got to pick your moments. The water temp is sitting about 65°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no shocking chill.
The first decent chance is on Wednesday, July 15th, but it's a tricky one. The morning has a solid 10ft south swell, with a lot of grunt behind it – the combined energy is a strong 2336 (moderate to strong). That's a lot of water moving. It's a cross-off wind, so the surf will be clean, but that size is only for the experienced crew. The afternoon drops off to 6ft, but the wind goes cross and the period drops.
Saturday, July 18th, is a write-off. Tiny, weak energy around 2ft to 3ft, with poor conditions. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, Sunday, July 19th, things start to get interesting. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the ENE with a long 10 to 11 second period. The energy is moderate (640 to 759), and it's a groundswell. The wind is light, but it's cross to cross-on, so it's not perfect. It's a reef break, so that long period swell should wrap in nicely, but the tide or something else is making it marginal.
The standout is Monday, July 20th. The morning is the pick of the first week. You've got a clean 5ft ENE swell with a 10-second period. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, keeping the surface clean. The energy is a solid 558 (moderate). Towradgi is a reef break that's very consistent, and it's exposed to that SE swell direction, but this ENE swell is off its optimum. Still, for the conditions, this is the best you'll see. Expect some crowds as it's a well-known spot and can get busy.
Tuesday, July 21st, is a smaller version of Monday with a 4ft swell and clean morning conditions. Then Wednesday, July 22nd, has a tiny 4ft swell but the wind goes glassy in the morning. Surfable, but small.
The second week looks more promising for a bigger, cleaner day. Keep an eye on Sunday, July 26th, and Monday, July 27th. Sunday morning has a chunky 8ft south swell with a 10-second period and a massive 1999 combined energy (strong). It's a bit blown out with cross winds, but it's big. Monday, July 27th, is the real target. The morning is glassy with a 5ft south swell, a very long 12-second period, and a strong 796 energy. The wind is calm, glassy. That's a proper groundswell, and at a reef, it should offer some really good, clean lines. That's for the experienced surfers given the size and power. The crowd will be there, but it's worth it.
After that, the swell fades out pretty quickly through the end of the month, with small, weak surf and ordinary conditions.
So, in short: Monday, July 20th morning for the cleanest, most user-friendly surf of the first week. For the big, powerful, and clean groundswell, lock in Monday, July 27th morning. Paddles out.
Rusty.
