The Lowdown
Alright, let me lay it out for you. The next couple of days are pretty average, but there’s a clean window coming if you’ve got the patience.
For Towradgi (reef), the water’s sitting at 65°, which is about a degree warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing wild, just a little warm spell.
The next few days are a mixed bag. Saturday afternoon, July 18th is a total write-off with a weak 2ft easterly windswell, cross-on breeze, and poor conditions. Sunday the 19th has a bit more size at 6ft from the ENE with a solid 11-second period, but the wind is cross-shore and onshore in the afternoon, so it’s only marginal.
The standout is Monday morning, July 20th. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the ENE, 11-second period, combined energy of 713 (moderate), and a light cross-offshore NNW breeze. That’s going to be clean and lined up. The afternoon goes to crap with a strong NE cross-on, so make it a dawn session.
Tuesday morning the 21st is still decent with 4ft, clean cross-off wind, but the energy drops to 370. Wednesday the 22nd sees a smaller 3ft swell with offshore wind, but it’s just ordinary.
The next real highlight is Friday morning, July 24th. The swell picks up to 6ft from the south, 10-second period, combined energy of 668 (moderate), and the wind is glassy out of the west. That’s going to be clean and punchy. This is the best of the week for the experienced crew – over 5ft, so it’s getting a bit spicy for beginners.
Saturday the 25th has a glassy morning with 3ft south swell, but it’s small. After that, things drop off significantly. From Sunday the 26th onwards, the swell fades into the 1ft to 3ft range, with messy winds and poor conditions. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations.
Late in the period, around Thursday afternoon, July 30th, a 6ft swell from the SE pops up with a short 7-second period, but the wind is cross-shore and conditions are only marginal. The following Friday and Saturday the 31st and 1st are all onshore and messy – rain, heavy wind, and poor surf.
Sunday morning, August 2nd is a late bright spot: 4ft from the east with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions. Combined energy is 207 (weak), but it’s surfable.
Overall, the best bet for clean, quality waves is Monday morning, July 20th and Friday morning, July 24th. The 24th has the most size and energy, but it’s one for the experienced. The 20th is a solid all-rounder.
Rusty.
