The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Towradgi over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. For the first few days, there’s just nothing doing. We’ve got a little bump of swell on Friday the 21st of August, with waves around 3 ft coming from the ENE, but the period is a short 7 seconds – not much push behind it. The wind is light offshore from the W at 6 mph, and the combined energy is weak (59). It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s very ordinary. Later that day, the wind drops to glassy, and the swell bumps up to 3 ft from the NE, but the period drops to 6 seconds, energy is still moderate (116). It’s not going to be great.
The next few days, from the 22nd through the 27th, are a write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is shifty, and conditions are poor. There’s a day on the 28th with a glassy morning, but the swell is only 2 ft and short period. It’s clean, but there’s no real power.
Now, here’s where it gets a little interesting. On Sunday the 30th of August, a pulse of swell arrives. The morning sees waves around 6 ft from the E, with an 8-second period, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 695. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the ENE at 3 mph, so it’s a bit bumpy, but the energy is there. The afternoon is similar, with 6 ft from the ENE. It’s a marginal forecast, but this is the first hint of real size.
The standout comes on Monday the 31st of August. The morning session looks the goods. Swell holds at 6 ft from the E, still 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 364. The wind is a light offshore breeze from the SSW at 6 mph, which will clean things right up. Towradgi is a reef break, and with this swell direction and clean offshore wind, it should be offering up some decent, grindier waves. This is your best window. Get in before the wind goes nuts in the afternoon.
After that, things drop off again. The first week of September is a mix of tiny swell and onshore winds, with nothing to recommend. The water temperature is around 65°F, which is about 1°F above the norm for this time of year – nothing to write home about.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud. The real action is on the 30th and 31st of August. Monday the 31st morning is the pick of the forecast. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best we’ve got.
Rusty.
