The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Torquay Front Beach over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it's a slow start. We've got a few days of flat, weak conditions through Saturday and Sunday, with the odd tiny wave showing up Sunday morning. That 2ft SSW swell on Sunday is there, but it's weak and ordinary; the combined energy is only 98. Not worth getting excited about. Monday and Tuesday are even smaller, with the swell dropping to 1ft, and energy barely registering. That 15-second period on Wednesday morning is a tease with no height to back it up.

The first real pulse of energy hits on Thursday the 23rd. We get a jump to 6ft from the SSW with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1447. The wind is cross-off from the WSW, so it'll be clean, but the score is just average. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on.

Friday the 24th is a letdown after that, with the swell dropping back to nothing. Then we have another gap with no real surf through Saturday and Sunday the 26th, just a tiny 0.7ft spike with a crazy 23-second period on Sunday afternoon – too long and too weak to do anything with, energy is only 53.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. The standout window is the final week of July and into the start of August. Monday the 27th morning sees a clean 5ft SSW swell with a 12-second period and 733 energy. Offshore winds from the NW will have it looking tidy. That's a good, solid session for intermediates.

But the real highlight is Tuesday the 28th. We're looking at a solid 7ft SSW groundswell in the morning, pushing up to 7ft in the afternoon, with a long 15 to 16-second period. The combined energy is massive – 2495 in the morning, 2223 in the afternoon. Winds are offshore from the NW all day, keeping it clean. This is proper, powerful, long-period groundswell. At 7ft, it's getting up there, so this is one for the experienced crew only. The break is a sheltered beginner spot, so with that much energy and that long a period, it might actually be a bit too straight and fat for the banks here, but for the few who know where to sit, it'll be pumping.

The quality holds through Wednesday the 29th with 5ft to 5ft SSW swell and offshore winds, a great follow-up day. Thursday the 30th gets a bit bigger again at 10ft to 12ft, but the wind swings onshore from the SSW, making it a messy, blown-out wall of water. That's more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. The period is a shorter 11 seconds, so it'll be a bit of a washing machine.

The last real chance is Friday the 31st of July. The swell drops to a more manageable 7ft to 8ft from the SSW, the wind is offshore from the WNW in the morning, going glassy in the afternoon. The energy is still strong at 1072. This is a beautiful, clean, powerful swell for experienced surfers. After that, the weekend of August 1st and 2nd gets blown out by strong onshore winds, so that's the end of the run.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The best of the best is Tuesday the 28th of July for the big, clean groundswell, with Friday the 31st of July being a very close second for the clean, glassy conditions. Don't miss those windows.

Rusty.
