The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for your local stretch. Let’s be real upfront: the next 16 days are a mixed bag, with a long, quiet gap in the middle. There’s one standout that’s worth circling on the calendar, but you’ll need patience.
The first bit of surf worth paddling out for is on Sunday, August 30th at Torquay Front Beach. That morning, it’s looking like a proper session. We’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the SSW, with a very long period of 18 seconds – that’s serious groundswell energy, and it’ll be powerful. The water temp is sitting at 56°, which is about average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest rubber. The wind is light from the W at 6 mph, making for clean, cross-off conditions. The combined energy is pumping at 4617, so this is a big, powerful swell. Because it’s over 8ft, this one’s for the experienced crew only – beginners, stay on the sand. The crowd factor is listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but with that much energy, it’ll be worth it. The afternoon takes a bit of a hit with a cross-on breeze, so the morning is your window.
Before that, there’s honestly not much to get excited about. We’ve got a few days with tiny, weak waves and poor conditions – nothing worth driving for. The longest gap is from the start of the forecast until the 30th, so just over a week of flat or messy conditions.
After the 30th, the pattern drops off hard. From Monday, August 31st right through to the end of the outlook on Monday, September 7th, it’s a relentless run of little to no surf. The swell heights are mostly below 2ft, the energy is weak (as low as 1 and 10), and the coastal winds are mostly moderate to fresh, keeping things chopped. There’s a tiny flicker on Thursday, September 3rd afternoon with a 2ft swell from the S at 15 seconds, but it’s really ordinary, not a standout. The rest is just a waiting game.
So, the one true standout is Sunday morning, August 30th at Torquay Front Beach. Mark it, get up early, and be ready for a powerful, clean swell. Everything else in the 16-day window is a write-off for quality surfing.
Rusty.
