The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. Looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a flat spell for the Torquay Front Beach area. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing happening, then a couple of days where it might just be worth paddling out, but honestly, the pickings are slim. The water temp is sitting at 56°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit is going to feel familiar.
The first real chance of seeing waves bigger than a ripple looks like it’ll be on Wednesday the 26th. It’s a long way out, but there’s a glimmer of hope. A south-southwest swell of around 3ft is due in the morning, with a 12-second period, so there’s a bit of energy behind it. The combined energy is reading 184, which is moderate. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it has the potential to be clean. But don’t get too excited – the afternoon drops off to 2ft and turns a bit cross-on, so the morning window is your best bet to get a few soft ones. And it’s a beginner-friendly break, so if you’re just looking to get wet, that’s your day.
After that, we go back into the doldrums for a few days. The winds through the end of August into the 31st are messy. Saturday the 29th brings a fresh cross-shore wind at 19 mph with a lumpy sea, and Sunday the 30th has a stronger 4ft to 4ft swell, but it’s short-period SE windswell, with only 5-7 seconds between waves. It’s going to be a bumpy, crumbly mess. Not worth your time unless you like getting frustrated.
However, there is one standout in the whole period. Keep an eye on Monday the 31st of August. The wind is forecast to drop right off to nothing in the afternoon, going glassy. We should see the tail end of that SE swell, still around 3ft, and with a period of 7 seconds it’ll be a bit weak, but the glassy conditions will make it look a thousand times better. It’s a last-minute call, but if the ocean lays down flat like that, the waves will be clean and playful at the break. That’s the one to chase.
The energy drops off after that, and we’re back to small, weak swells for the first few days of September. There’s a little bump of south-southwest swell around the 3rd and 4th, but the periods are short and the winds are onshore at times. It’s not going to be a classic. For the most part, this is a quiet patch, and for a spot like this that’s pretty normal. It won’t stay flat forever, and the long-range forecast always has a chance to change for the better.
Until next time, keep your eyes on the horizon.
