Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter for Tokatu Peninsula. Let’s be straight with you about the next sixteen days – it’s a tough run. The forecast is mostly flat and weak, with a few tiny windows where you might get wet, but nothing that’s going to get the heart racing. The first proper surf recommendation doesn’t show up until the afternoon of Wednesday, July 8th, so there’s a gap of about four days from now with nothing worth paddling out for.
The only spot we’ve got to look at is Tokatu Peninsula. It’s a fairly exposed beginner-friendly spot, but it’s fairly inconsistent, so you’ve got to be patient. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no need to worry about a wetsuit drama.
Let’s run through the best it gets. Wednesday afternoon, July 8th is the first time you’ll see anything rideable. We’re looking at a tiny 2 ft swell from the east, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak (77), so don’t expect much push. The wind is offshore from the south at 12 mph, which will keep it clean, but it’s very ordinary surf. It’s a 1-out-of-10 kind of day.
Thursday, July 9th is a touch better, with the same 2 ft east swell, period up to 10 seconds, and gentle offshore wind from the SSW at 9 mph in the morning, picking up to 16 mph in the afternoon. The energy is still weak (91 morning, 81 afternoon), but it’s clean and surfable. It’s still very ordinary, though.
Saturday afternoon, July 11th sees a slight bump to 3 ft from the southeast, with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is still weak (87), and the wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’s clean. But again, it’s just surfable, not exciting.
After that, the rest of the window is a long, drawn-out flat spell. From Sunday, July 12th through to the end of the forecast on Sunday, July 19th, the swell drops to 2 ft or less, with many days seeing 1 ft or 0.7 ft. The combined energy dips into the teens and single digits. There’s a glassy moment on Friday afternoon, July 17th, with 0.7 ft from the east and a period of 11 seconds, but it’s pure flatness. The offshore winds on the 18th and 19th are strong and clean, but there’s just no swell to work with.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. The best you can hope for is a weak, clean wave on the 9th or 11th, but it’s a beggars-can’t-be-choosers situation. The crowds are listed as “often” at Tokatu Peninsula, so when that tiny window opens, expect a few locals out. For beginners, this is perfect – the waves never get above 3 ft, so it’s safe. For anyone else, it’s a frustrating wait. The forecast might change, but right now, it’s a flat spell.
Rusty.
