The Lowdown
Alright folks, let's be real with each other. The surf over the next couple of weeks is looking pretty darn bleak. There's just nothing doing, and I've got to call it like I see it. We're looking at a long stretch of flat, messy, and blown-out conditions. From the 23rd through the 28th of August, it's all poor surf. The wind is mostly side or side-on shore, which just wrecks any chance of a clean wave, even if there was any size to speak of. We get a touch of glass on the mornings of the 23rd and 26th, but there's no swell to go with it, so it's just a nice-looking ocean doing nothing.
Here's the deal. The only real window we have for anything at all is around the 29th and 30th. On the 29th, some energy finally rolls in. The combined swell energy climbs to 113 on Saturday morning and then to 157 in the afternoon as it cleans up with a cross-off breeze. We're looking at waves around 4ft, coming from the southwest. It's not huge and the period is short, only about 6 seconds, so it won’t have much grunt. This spot, Ramsgate (The Wall), is a sheltered breakwater that's inconsistent at the best of times, so you've got to be patient. It's going to be the best on offer, but it's nothing to write home about. Only for the keen ones.
After that little blip, it fades out quickly. By the 31st, the energy is dropping fast, and we are back to nothing but poor conditions through to the 7th of September. The wind stays messy, and the waves stay tiny. There's just a glimmer on the 29th and 30th, but that's it. The second week looks like a total loss, I won't lie to you. For the paddle surfers, you might be better off finding something else to do. For the kite surfers, that Saturday the 29th with the cross-off wind and some lumpy waves might be more your scene than mine.
One thing I'll mention: the water temp on that first day is sitting at 70°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That's a big deal and you'll feel it.
So, that's the situation. It's not good, but that's the way it goes. The ocean won't stay flat forever, and the long-range forecasts can shift, but as it stands now, don't get your hopes up.
Rusty.
