The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s not sugarcoat it: Ramsgate (The Wall) is in a 16-day drought. This break is a sheltered breakwater that’s always crowded and rarely breaks, and there’s not a single session in the whole forecast that rates a go. It’s a total blank.
Starting Sunday, August 23rd, it’s clean and flat – zero energy. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th bring a little 3ft easterly swell, but the wind is onshore or cross-shore, and the period is a weak 4 seconds. Energy is a paltry 27. Not worth a look. Wednesday the 26th has a brief offshore wind, but the swell is almost flat. Wednesday afternoon delivers a tiny 2ft swell from the south-southwest at 4 seconds – energy of 7.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see a bump to 4ft to 4ft from the south, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and Friday afternoon turns into a near gale (55 km/h). The energy hits 111 (moderate), but it’s blown out and messy. Not safe for beginners.
Saturday the 29th offers a cleaner cross-off wind from the west-southwest, and the swell reaches 5ft from the SW, period only 6 seconds, energy 156. That’s the biggest swell of the run, but the break is inconsistent, and the wind is fresh. Sunday the 30th has a similar 5ft swell (energy 190) but with a cross-shore wind and lumpy conditions.
From Monday the 31st of August onward, it’s all dribble. The 31st morning is glassy with a 1ft swell – glassy means clean, but there’s no power. Energy is 4. The first week of September is a sad run of 0.5ft to 1ft swells, with some clean offshore and glassy days, but the swell is too weak to break. The energy never gets above 35.
Water temp is about average for this time of year – nothing unusual.
So, the best of a bad lot? The biggest swell on the 29th and 30th (5ft, SW) is the only thing that gets close, but the inconsistency and the fresh wind make it a long shot. The 6th and 7th of September show a 3ft SW swell with clean cross-off wind, but a weak 4-second period and energy of 35. For a sheltered spot, that’s a skunk.
Given the tiny, short-period swells, and the breakwater setup, there’s nothing for kite surfing either – just flat, clean water.
Save your energy. Forecasts can change, but for now, The Wall is a no-go.
Rusty.
