The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for the next 16 days.
To be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim outlook. The finder service has come up blank – no recommendations. That’s not a huge surprise for a spot like Takapuna-North Reef. It’s a sheltered beginner reef, and it doesn’t fire often. So, a long stretch of nothing is kind of normal for this place.
The entire 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. It’s flat. The highest combined energy we see is a paltry 25 (that’s weak energy). Most days are just zeros or single-digit values. The swell height is stuck on 0.3 ft to 2 ft the whole way through, with tiny periods of 3 to 8 seconds. That’s just wind chop, not a wave you’d paddle out for.
The water temperature is sitting at 57°, which is 2° colder than average for this time of year. That’s a bit nippier than usual, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit if you’re just going for a swim.
There’s a day on Monday 20th July where the wind goes glassy in the morning, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3 ft. It’s pretty, but unsurfable. The only other time the wind is favorable is with a moderate offshore on Saturday 25th July afternoon, but again, the swell is just 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft. You could paddle around on a longboard, but you’d just be floating.
Honestly, leave the board at home. The water is flat, the energy is non-existent, and there’s no sign of a pulse coming through. It’s a blank run and it’s not going to change. The forecasts can shift, but right now, there’s nothing to be optimistic about.
Rusty.
