Alright, let’s look at this in feet and miles per hour for you.
It’s a quiet one for Takapuna-North Reef, no two ways about it. We’ve got a long stretch coming up with hardly anything to paddle into for the next couple weeks.
Starting on Monday the 6th, it’s flat. A tiny 0.3ft NE swell with a combined energy of only 5 – that’s weak as water. There’s a risk of thunderstorms and a cross wind at 9 mph, so just forget it. Water temp’s about 58°, right where it should be for this time of year.
Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th are the same story – small, weak swells and poor surf. The energy sits in the 60s and 40s, then tanks again. Thursday through the weekend is a total flat spell; energy drops to single digits and even hits 1 on Sunday the 12th. That Sunday morning is glassy, but there’s no swell to enjoy it.
From Monday the 13th through the middle of the month, it’s dead. Zero energy for a couple of days. There’s a little bump on the 14th with a 4ft NE swell and energy of 85, but it’s still poor surf with a moderate cross-offshore breeze at 12 mph. Not worth suiting up. Wednesday the 15th is clean with an offshore wind, but the swell is only 1ft – barely a bump.
It’s not until Monday the 21st that we see something decent. A 3ft N swell with a 10-second period and combined energy of 128 – that’s moderate energy, finally. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. Then Tuesday the 22nd shows a 5ft N swell, but the period drops to 6 seconds and the wind turns cross-on. That’s going to be a choppy, closing-out mess. Over 5ft is too much for beginners, and with that short period and onshore wind, even the regulars will struggle.
For this spot, which is inconsistent and sheltered, these long dry spells are just part of the deal. The only real highlight in the whole 16-day window is that Monday the 21st – clean, a 3ft north swell with light offshore winds and moderate energy (128). That’s the one to keep an eye on. The rest of it? I’d say give it a miss.
