The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle around Takapuna-North Reef (Auckland). We’ve got a long dry spell on our hands for a spot that’s already described as *inconsistent*, so this sort of quiet run isn’t exactly out of character. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Sunday the 30th of August, and even then it comes with a catch. That means we’re staring down close to two weeks of flat to junk conditions from Monday the 17th right through until Saturday the 29th.

For that long stretch, the swell is either non-existent or tiny, barely scraping a few inches with terrible short-period wind chop from the south. Most days have clean or glassy wind, but there’s simply nothing to ride. It’s a frustrating wait.

But heads up for Sunday the 30th of August. Things finally pick up with a pulse of northerly swell. The morning sees 5.2ft of swell coming from the north, but it’s a short-period 6 seconds, which means the energy is junky and weak (combined energy of 212). The wind is a cross-onshore from the NNE at 9 mph, making it choppy. This is actually beginner-sized, but the conditions are poor, and the wind is onshore. That afternoon, the swell drops slightly to 4.9ft with a slightly longer 8-second period and 275 combined energy, still with cross-onshore wind building to 12 mph – messy. Honestly, the only standout here is that we finally have some swell, but the quality is low. For a sheltered, beginner-friendly reef that likes NE swell, this is a miss.

From Monday the 31st, the swell fades fast back to small junk.

Sorry, mates, it’s a dud run. Forecasts can change, but right now the only action is that one day of messy, onshore wind swell. Keep the board waxed for another week and cross your fingers.
