Table - best surf conditions forecast for Takapuna-North Reef over the next 16 days.
Alright mate, I’ll be straight with ya – this is a grim outlook for Takapuna-North Reef. There’s no proper surf worth talking about across the full 16 days. The whole run is a dud for paddle surfing, so don’t get your hopes up.
We start Thursday the 9th of July. It’s cloudy with a cross-shore wind and a tiny 2ft swell out of the south – period’s only 3 seconds. That’s barely a ripple. Combined swell energy is just a weak 11 – that’s nothing. The wind swings cross-off in the arvo but it’s still only 3ft of short-period slop. Friday the 10th gives us a little more cross-off breeze and 2ft south swell, but still just 17 energy and a 4-second period. Not worth paddling out.
Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th go glassy – wind’s almost calm – but the swell drops to 0.3ft or even flat. A couple of days with zero energy. From Monday the 13th through Wednesday the 15th, we get tiny onshore slop or cross-off dribble, 0.7ft to 2ft at best, period topping out at 6 seconds. No push at all.
Thursday the 16th morning is glassy calm, 0.3ft easterly with a longer 12-second period, but combined energy is only 6. That arvo we get a 0.3ft swell with an 18-second period and 16 energy – still too small. On Friday the 17th morning we get a glassy 4ft NNE swell with 99 energy, but it’s still poor surf conditions – sheltered spot, direction’s no good.
By Friday arvo and into the weekend of the 18th and 19th of July, the swell actually boosts – 5ft to 5ft with combined energy hitting 204 and even 534. But the wind’s onshore at 12 to 22 mph, blowing straight out of the east, and the period is short to moderate. That’s just messy, blown-out junk. For a sheltered reef, east onshore wind ruins everything. This setup looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
From Sunday the 19th arvo through to Friday the 24th of July, it’s all downhill – onshore winds 22 to 25 mph, swell dropping to 0.3ft to 1ft, combined energy falling to single or low double digits. Some periods are long (12–14 seconds) but there’s no size behind ‘em. Not one standout session in the whole outlook. This is the kind of stretch where you just wait for the next forecast – it can’t stay this flat forever.
