Updates in  hr  min  s Forecast update imminent

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s call it like it is – this stretch is a rough one for paddle surfing. Takapuna-North Reef is a sheltered little beginner spot, but over the next 16 days it’s mostly flat or just not cooperating. The whole run looks like a blank spell with only a few flickers of hope, and even then, the swell is tiny. If you’re keen on getting wet, you’ll be chasing crumbs.

The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is right about average for this time of year – no surprises there.

Starting off, the first few days are a write-off. Tuesday 7th July has a risk of thunderstorms, a weak 2ft from the north with a short period of 8 seconds, and onshore wind. The combined energy is a measly 47 – not even worth the walk down. Wednesday and Thursday are worse, with swell dropping to 1.0ft then 0.3ft. Friday through to Monday 13th July are all flat or near-flat, with swell heights of 0.3ft or less and energy numbers in the single digits. A few glassy mornings on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July look pretty, but there’s nothing to ride.

The first real sign of something comes on Tuesday 14th July. The morning sees 3ft from the north with a period of 5 seconds and a cross-off wind. By the afternoon, it bumps to 4ft from the north, period still 5 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 112 – moderate energy, but the period is very short and junky. The wind stays cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but with that short period, it’s going to be fat and weak. For a beginner spot, it might be okay, but it’s nothing to get excited about.

Wednesday 15th July through the rest of the week drops back down to 1ft to 2ft, mostly with clean offshore or cross-off winds. The combined energy sits between 24 and 41 – still weak. There’s a few pockets of clean swell on Thursday 16th July with 2ft from the north and offshore wind, but it’s just not enough to make a session memorable.

From Friday 17th July onward, it’s back to flat or 0.3ft. The only thing worth mentioning is that the winds stay light and clean, so if you’re just floating around, it’s nice. But for surf? Forget it. The long-range stuff from 20th July to 22nd July is all 0.3ft or flat, and the energy numbers are hovering at 4 to 6. Honestly, the best thing about this forecast is the glassy mornings for a paddle, not a wave.

If you’re experienced and bored, that afternoon on Tuesday 14th July is the only time you’ll even get a bump, and even then, it’s more like a ripple. For kite surfers, the stronger cross-off winds on a few days won’t matter because there’s no swell to push a kite. Save your energy.
