The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at what’s happening for Takapuna-North Reef over the next couple of weeks.
I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch. The whole 16-day window is basically one long gap with no surf worth paddling out for. The waves are tiny, the energy is weak, and the conditions just aren’t coming together for a proper session. We’re talking 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft stuff for most of the first week, with combined swell energy barely cracking double digits. It’s a real flat spell.
A few days around the 20th of July show a bit of a bump to 2 ft, but the swell period is a short 3 seconds, so it’s just messy windswill with onshore and cross-onshore winds and no real push. The 25th and 26th of July have some glassy mornings with 1 ft to 2 ft from the NE, and the energy climbs a little – up to 48 (moderate) by the Saturday afternoon – but the swell is still tiny and the period is only 10 seconds, so it’s barely rideable. The 27th of July Monday morning is glassy with a 1 ft NE swell and a period of 11 seconds, but again, it’s just too small to get excited about.
For a beginner break that’s already inconsistent, this is a tough run. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. If you’re a kiter, with the light winds and small, weak waves, it’s not great for that either.
Honestly, my advice is to wait for a better forecast. Things won’t stay this flat forever, but for now, keep the board in the car and the wetsuit dry.
Rusty.
