The Lowdown
Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for the North Shore. There’s a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for, so don’t get your hopes up too early.
The main spot on the radar is Takapuna-North Reef. It’s a sheltered beginner spot, but it rarely breaks and is inconsistent at the best of times. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so factor that in.
Looking at the start of the period, from Sunday the 19th through to Thursday the 24th, it’s a total write-off. We’re talking waves barely lifting a ripple – mostly 0.3ft to 1ft – with combined swell energy barely hitting double digits (5 to 19). It’s just poor surf conditions, full stop. There’s a glassy moment on Monday morning the 20th with zero wind, but there’s simply no swell to ride.
The best we can find is a brief window on Saturday the 25th. The surf is still tiny – only 1ft from the NNW – but we get a fresh offshore breeze from the WNW at 19 mph, which will clean things up. The combined energy is still weak (9). It’s not a stand-out by any stretch, but it’s the only time the wind is actually working with us. If you’re desperate for a float, this is it.
After that, it’s back to the same story. Sunday the 26th has no swell at all. There’s a flicker of life on Monday the 27th with 1ft from the north and a gentle offshore, but the energy is still weak (18). The rest of the week into August is just more of the same: tiny waves, some periods of long-period groundswell (15 to 21 seconds) but the height is only 0.3ft to 0.7ft, so it’s a tease. The combined energy stays low (30 to 38) through the 2nd of August, but the swell direction is from the north, and the wind is cross or cross-off, so it’s not going to shape up.
Honestly, there’s nothing here to get excited about. The only time the wind truly cleans up the little bumps is on the 25th, but even then, it’s barely a wave. Hang tight, or go for a surfski session.
Rusty.
