Table - best surf conditions forecast for Takapuna-North Reef over the next 16 days.
Well, folks, Rusty here. I’m gonna level with you – we’ve got a pretty bleak stretch ahead for Takapuna-North Reef. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a dud. There are no recommendations that I’d be stoked on, so we’re looking at a long, flat gap. If you’re dreaming of waves, you might be waiting a while.
Starting from now, Friday afternoon the 10th of July, it's tiny. We're talking a weak 0.1m of swell from the NE with a period of 11 seconds, but all that combined energy is just a measly 6 – that's barely a ripple. The wind is a light cross-shore from the SSE at 10 km/h, and the water temp is sitting at 14°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year.
Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th don't get any better. We see some glassy conditions, which is nice for the surface, but there’s no push. Swell stays at 0.1m with period dropping right off. On Sunday afternoon, the period bottoms out at 5 seconds – that’s just wind slop, not a real wave.
Monday the 13th sees a tiny bump to 0.2m, but the wind swings onshore from the NNE at 10 km/h, messing up what little there is. By Monday afternoon the wind picks up to 20 km/h, and we get a 0.7m cross-shore chop – energy climbs to 15, but it’s still poor quality.
Tuesday the 14th is a tease. The morning goes glassy with a 0.7m swell from the north, period up to 6 seconds, and energy at 29. It’s clean, but the waves just aren't there. Tuesday afternoon stays clean with a cross-off wind, but the swell drops to 0.5m.
From Wednesday the 15th right through to the end of the month, it’s a story of tiny swells and inconsistent energy. We get a few moments of glassy or offshore wind – like on the 18th with a clean 0.1m swell from the east, or the 22nd with glassy 0.4m – but the energy figures are all in the single digits or low teens. Nothing ever breaks 50 for combined energy.
Even the end of the window, around Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th, shows the biggest swell of the whole period – up to 1.0m on the 24th afternoon, with energy hitting 48. But it’s coming from the north-northeast with a period of just 5 seconds, and the wind is light cross-onshore. That’s still not a surfable wave for a sheltered reef.
Honestly, for Takapuna-North Reef, this is one of those blank runs we sometimes get. It’s inconsistent at the best of times, and this forecast shows nothing worth paddling out for. Keep an eye on the charts – things can change.
Rusty.
