The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’.
Well, I’ll be honest with ya – it’s gonna be a long, flat spell for us. For the next 16 days, there’s basically nothin’ doing. We’re staring down a massive gap with no surf worth paddling for. From Sunday the 23rd of August right through to Saturday the 6th of September, every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. That’s a full two weeks plus of barely a ripple.
The only spot in the mix is Takapuna-North Reef, and it’s sheltered and inconsistent as it is, so no surprises. It’s a beginner spot, but with swell heights barely reaching 0.3 ft for the first week, you’d be floating more than surfing. Combined energy is weak – mostly sitting around 2 to 3 (yes, that’s tiny). The water temp is sitting at 56°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year, so it’s a bit nippy but not unusual.
There’s a tiny flicker of life around Friday the 28th of August morning – swell bumps to 2 ft from the north, period a short 4 seconds, energy hits 15 – but it’s still poor quality. The wind is cross-off from the NNW at 12 mph, so it’s clean, but with that period and size, there’s just no push. Same story on Saturday the 5th of September morning: 2 ft from the ENE, but again a short 3-second period and only 12 energy.
So, honestly? Nothing to get excited about. No standouts. No windows. It’s just flat and quiet. If you’re itching for a paddle, you’ll find clean water but no waves. For a sheltered reef like this, a blank run is pretty normal when there’s no swell direction hitting it right.
Stay patient. It’ll turn around.
Rusty.
