Table - best surf conditions forecast for Takapuna-North Reef over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the next 16 days for Takapuna-North Reef in feet and degrees.
It’s a real quiet start. For the first week and a half, you’re looking at tiny, weak waves with lousy conditions – nothing worth a paddle. There’s a long gap of flatness until around the 22nd of July when some real size and energy finally rolls in.
The main event is on Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd. Wednesday morning sees a 6ft swell from the NE with a 12-second period and combined energy of 899 – that’s a heavy, powerful pulse. Wind is cross-shore from the S at 12 mph, so expect some chop. Wednesday afternoon cleans up nicely as the wind goes cross-offshore from the SSW at 9 mph. The swell settles to 5ft with an 11-second period and 497 energy. This is your cleanest, most surfable window. Remember, anything over 5ft starts to get a bit much for beginners.
Thursday the 23rd stays clean with offshore wind, but the swell fades – 3ft in the morning (230 energy) and 3ft in the afternoon (182 energy). Still a fun, shoulder-high day.
Before that, from the 12th through the 20th, it’s mostly flat with no real surf. The north reef here is a sheltered, inconsistent spot. The swell direction is best from the NE, which matches the pulses we get. It’s a tricky call for beginners – the 4-5ft waves could be a handful. Crowds can show up sometimes when the surf’s good, so be ready for that.
Rusty.
