The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got on the cards.
Right, straight up – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for Takapuna-North Reef. Honestly, for most of the next 16 days, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything worth paddling out for. The swell energy is basically non-existent for a long stretch, with tiny amounts of weak, short-period slop. The wind does go offshore or cross-off a fair bit, which is a tease, but there’s just nothing to ride.
We’re looking at a big gap in any real surf. From the start, right through the rest of August, there’s barely a ripple. You’ll get some light WNW offshores on the 31st and into the 1st of September, but the swell is a tiny 1 ft out of the NE. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a paltry 28 (or 26 later), which is just dead water. It’s clean glass, but you’d need a wing to get moving.
The only time the ocean wakes up a little is around Wednesday, September 2nd. Now, it’s not classic Takapuna, but there’s a pulse of swell coming. The morning shows a jump to 4 ft from the north, but it’s a 5-second windswell with a combined energy of 61. It won’t be pretty. The afternoon session on the 2nd gets a bit chunkier, with 5 ft from the north. That’s getting into beginner-too-big territory, and with a 7-second period, it’s going to be fat and weak at this beach break. The combined energy of all swells directed here does jump to 233, which is moderate, so there is some push. The winds are cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but the quality won’t be good. For the more experienced crew, it might offer a few lumpy, closed-out walls, but for the average surfer, it’s a miss.
After that, we get a clean-up from the SW on the 3rd and 4th, dropping back down to waist-high mush. No real standouts this period, I’m afraid. The water temp here is about 57°, which is pretty standard for this time of year.
So, the honest truth from me? For this 16-day window at Takapuna-North Reef, there are no true standout days. If you absolutely have to get wet, the cleanest, biggest option is the afternoon of September 2nd, but keep your expectations low on quality. Otherwise, it’s a long blank run.
Rusty.
