The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've got to be straight with you – we've got a pretty grim run of surf ahead for the next couple of weeks. The only spot on the radar is Takapuna-North Reef, and honestly, it's not looking good at all.
Water temp is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so at least we don't have to worry about a sudden cold snap.
The first sign of any swell doesn't pop up until Sunday the 23rd of August, and even then it's a tiny 0.3ft from the north with a 13-second period. The combined energy is a measly 3 (weak energy), and with a cross-off wind, it's just not worth paddling out. That's a long gap of nothing from the start of the forecast.
We stay in the doldrums right through the week. A bit of a pulse on Friday the 28th of August brings 3ft from the north with a period of just 4-5 seconds and combined energy up to 28 (still weak energy). That's a short-period, choppy mess with a cross-shore wind – more likely to be interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The best of a bad bunch might be Monday the 31st of August morning. We've got 1ft from the northeast, an 11-second period, and combined energy of 29 (weak energy). The wind is glassy, so it'd be clean, but it's still tiny and inconsistent. Crowds are possible here, but honestly, I wouldn't stress about that when there's barely anything to ride.
The rest of the run into early September is a sorry story of tiny 0.3ft to 1ft waves with weak energy, and while we get some offshore winds, the swell just isn't there. Sunday the 5th of September morning has a clean 0.3ft from the northeast with a 13-second period and a moderate offshore wind, but it's still not enough to get excited about.
This is a blank run for the area, and it's not unusual. Takapuna-North Reef is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner spot, and when the swell's this quiet, it just doesn't fire. Keep your gear dry and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
