Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Been staring at the charts for your neck of the woods, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead. We're looking at a long, quiet period with next to nothing on offer for surfable waves.
The whole 16-day window is a bit of a dud, I'm afraid. For the first week and a half, the waves just aren't there. The water temperature is sitting at 58°, which is about average for this time of year, no surprises there.
Let's walk through it. Starting this Saturday, July 4th, we see tiny swell but the wind is all wrong – cross-on and choppy. Sunday the 5th has a moment of glassy conditions, but the swell is only 2 feet from the north, and combined wave energy is a paltry 40. It's clean, but there's no power. That theme pretty much holds right through to Thursday, the 16th.
While we get a few windows of light offshore or glassy winds, the swell is simply too small and weak to generate a proper wave. The combined energy barely cracks triple digits, and most days it's hovering between 5 and 43. That's the sound of a flat spell.
Now, there is a bit of a pulse on Thursday, July 16th. The swell height is forecast to bump up to 5 feet from the north, with combined energy jumping to 217. But that's where the good news ends. The wind will be a strong cross-onshore at 25 mph, making it messy and lumpy. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. The period is short at 7 seconds, meaning weak, wind-affected waves.
The only break in the data is Takapuna-North Reef itself. It's a sheltered, inconsistent beginner spot that rarely gets a good swell. Given the entire forecast is "poor surf conditions" and scores of 0, there's honestly no standout session to recommend. This is a classic case of a blank run, which is more normal for this area when the swells are as weak as this.
We do get a few smaller days later on, like Saturday the 18th, with glassy conditions but only 1 foot of swell and energy at 9. It's a nice morning for a paddle, but not for a wave.
So, in short, don't hold your breath. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but for now, the board stays in the shed.
