The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here.

I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this whole 16-day forecast for Takapuna-North Reef is a total dud. We’ve got a long, flat, frustrating run ahead, with only a few tiny pulses of energy that won’t give you anything worth paddling for.

The first nine days, from Wednesday the 19th right through to the 26th, are dominated by nothing but little ankle-biters and dead flat spells. There’s a tiny blip on Sunday the 23rd—a 1ft wave with a 5-second period and weak energy. That’s not a wave; that’s a ripple. The winds are mostly offshore and clean, so the surface would be perfect, but there’s just no swell to work with. It’s a proper tease.

Then things build a little on Thursday the 27th, with the swell reaching 3ft from the NNE, but the wind swings onshore and messes it up. Still, nothing worth getting excited about. The one day that might get your pulse going is Friday the 28th. The swell jumps to 6ft from the north, with a moderate 8-second period, and the energy builds strong. That’s the most power we see in the whole stretch. But don’t rush out. The wind is blowing hard cross-shore at 15 mph, it’s raining, and that’s a recipe for a blown-out, choppy mess. This being a beach and reef setup, it’ll be more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing one. It’s got size, but it won’t be clean at all.

After that, it fades right back off. The 29th and 30th are small and unimpressive, with onshore winds making things worse. There’s a short window on Monday the 31st in the morning with glassy conditions and a small NE swell, but it’s barely a foot. The period is longer, which hints at some groundswell, but the size just isn’t there.

The first few days of September keep the same story—tiny, weak surf, mostly under 2ft, with onshore breezes making it messy. The last really clean moment is Thursday the 3rd, glassy and calm, but only a few inches of swell. You’d get more action in a bathtub.

So, final call: there’s nothing here that’s worth chasing. The 28th is the biggest, but it’s too rough and windy. The rest is flat or fat. Water temp is 57°, which is about a degree colder than average for the season—nothing unusual. Keep the board in the shed; this reef isn’t giving us a thing.

Rusty.
