The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with ya – the next couple of weeks at Surfers Paradise are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We've got a long stretch of nothing special, but there are a couple of tiny windows where you might scratch an itch.

First up, don't get too excited about the next week. We're staring down the barrel of a lot of cross-onshore and choppy slop. The water temp is sitting around 69°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

There is one standout in all this, and it's a morning-only affair. Sunday the 9th of August. We get a complete glass-off with zero wind from the west. The swell picks up to 4ft from the east with a 8-second period, and the combined energy hits 212 (moderate energy). It won't be world-class, but for the Gold Coast, that glassy surface is going to make the most of what's on offer. It’ll be clean and rideable. Just be aware, it says the wind switches onshore by the afternoon, so get out there early.

Before that, Wednesday the 5th has a glimmer of hope. The morning session shows a light offshore from the WNW with 3ft of east swell and a 10-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 134. It's small and clean, but it's something.

After that Sunday glass-off, we go back into a slump. The following week shows mostly choppy, cross-shore junk with small waves. The best you can hope for is a clean-ish morning on Saturday the 15th with some light cross-offshore wind and 3ft of swell, but it's not going to blow your hair back.

Things get a bit interesting right at the very end, but it's long-range and iffy. Sunday the 16th shows a 6ft SSE swell with a short 8-second period and a combined energy of 479 (strong energy), but it's coming in with a cross-shore wind and it's rated as marginal. That size with that period on a beach break like Surfer's is going to be a bit of a washing machine. There's potential there for an expert only session if the wind plays nice, but I wouldn't bet the house on it a week and a half out. The day after, Monday the 17th, has a similar story with 4ft but messy winds.

Honestly, if you're looking to surf, focus on that Sunday the 9th morning. The rest of the time, the setup here looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle. The combo of onshore winds and beach-break chop just isn't doing us any favours.

Rusty.
