The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on offer for Laguna Beach – South Crescent Bay over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s not looking like a classic run of waves. This is a period where you’ll want to be patient. The surf is small and the conditions are frequently messy, so don’t expect any big, clean days to light up the calendar. The crowd situation here can be a factor, especially if any surf shows up.
For Wednesday the 19th, it’s a tough start. There’s a small 3ft SSW swell running with a very long 15-second period, which has some energy (327), but the wind is on it and the conditions are described as marginal. Not worth paddling out for anything special.
The next several days, from Thursday the 20th through to Tuesday the 27th of August, are pretty much a write-off. The swell stays between 1ft and 2ft, with most sessions showing poor conditions and zero scores. The wind is predominantly cross-onshore, creating that choppy, bumpy surface no one wants to paddle into for a waist-high wave. You’re looking at a solid 8-day gap without a proper surf.
Now, there is a faint glimmer at the tail end. On Friday morning, the 28th of August, we see a bit more energy (376) with a 2ft SSW swell and a very long 19-second period. The wind is light and cross-onshore, creating only small ripples. It’s still marginal, but the longer period and cleaner conditions make it the most promising window for a surf. With the swell being straight out of the SSW and the break preferring that direction, it’s a true standout for the period, though still on the smaller side. It might just clean up enough for a fun session.
The following weekend looks a little better on paper. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August show the swell building to 3ft to 3ft from the SSW. The energy is moderate (523 to 540), and the wind looks light, though still cross-onshore in the mornings. This keeps the window as "marginal." It's still the best of what’s in the forecast, but don’t expect perfection.
After that, into the first week of September, the surf really runs out of steam again, dropping back to 2ft to 2ft with poor conditions. The strong, clean swell we all dream about just isn't in the cards this time around. Hang in there, though. The forecasts can change.
Rusty.
