The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s check out what’s shaking at Laguna Beach – South Crescent Bay for the next couple of weeks. I gotta level with you, this isn’t a banner forecast. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, and the surf is pretty marginal for the most part.

Right now the water is a balmy 71°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. It’s like bathwater out there, great for sitting around, but the waves aren’t cooperating.

We’ve got some knee-to-waist high swell sticking around through the end of July, mostly from the SSW. The combined energy is in that moderate range, around 575 (moderate wave energy). The problem is most of this period has onshore or cross-onshore winds, messing up the surface. Nothing really stands out as a true clean, rippable day until the very end.

Now, if you’re itching for a paddle, the morning of Saturday, August 1st shows a little bump from the south at 4ft, with S swell direction. Still cross-on, but the wind is light, so it won’t be too choppy. The energy is hitting 709 (moderate wave energy), which is alright, but don’t expect perfection. By the afternoon, it drops to 3ft and goes onshore, so get it while you can.

The next morning, Sunday, August 2nd, is another look. We’re still seeing waist-high sets from the S at 4ft, with period dropping to 12 seconds. Winds are light cross-onshore again, so it’s okay for a grovel. The energy is down to 430 (moderate wave energy) though, so it’s a bit weaker.

After that, things really go flat. From late Sunday the 2nd onward, we’re looking at a stretch where the swell drops off a cliff. The combined energy plummets into the double digits – 125 (weak wave energy) and even as low as 80 (weak wave energy) by Tuesday the 4th. The swell heights are barely pushing 2ft, and it’s just small, weak, and choppy. It’s a real bummer.

So, to wrap it up: the best bet in this whole 16-day window is Saturday, August 1st, morning. It’s not going to be world-class, but that S swell at 4ft with light cross-onshore winds is the most energy we see all period, and it’s your best shot at a few fun ones before the flat spell settles in. Also, keep in mind this spot is fairly consistent and often has crowds, so you won’t have it to yourself.

Other than that, bring a longboard and low expectations, or just enjoy the warm water.

Rusty.
