The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s look at what’s cooking at Laguna Beach - South Crescent Bay. It’s a beach and reef setup that holds waves pretty consistently, but the next sixteen days are a classic story: one little pulse of swell, then a long, flat spell.

We start on Tuesday afternoon, July 28th, with a solid groundswell from the SSW. Swell height is about 3ft, with a period of 17 seconds – that’s real deep-ocean energy rolling in. The water is 72°, which feels much warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (787). Wind is light and cross-on at 6 mph, so it’s surfable, but has a bit of a bump.

Wednesday morning, July 29th, is a little smaller, 3ft from the same SSW, still with that nice 16-second period. Wind is a clean cross-shore at 9 mph. The best session of the whole run is Wednesday afternoon. The swell picks to 4ft, direction holds SSW, period stays at 16 seconds, and the energy jumps to 937 (moderate to strong). Wind stays light cross-on at 6 mph. That’s the one to be out for – the most power of the window.

Thursday the 30th, we get 4ft swell from the S with a 14-second period, but by the afternoon the wind goes onshore and the waves turn poor. From Friday, July 31st, through to Sunday, August 9th, it’s a bust. Swell drops to 1ft and smaller, the wind is onshore or crappy cross-on, and the energy numbers are in the low hundreds. That’s ten straight days of nothing to ride.

Toward the second week of August, from the 8th onward, we see the swell try to build back to 2ft or 3ft, but the wind turns onshore or moderate cross-on, and the energy stays weak (under 400). The quality just isn't there.

Your one and only highlight is Wednesday afternoon, July 29th. That’s the day with the most size, longest period, and decent conditions. Everything else is a long stretch of small, blown-out summer junk. Not much to write home about.
