Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ll level with ya – this forecast for Sandtracks over the next couple of weeks is pretty bleak. The whole 16-day window is basically one long flat spell with onshore, cross-shore winds. There’s barely a session worth paddling out for, so don't be in a rush to wax up.
Let me break it down. The water temp sits at 80°F – that’s about average for this time of year, nothing weird there, but you won't exactly need a steamer.
For the first ten days or so, from Saturday 4th July right through to the early part of the second week, we’ve got tiny, weak swells. Heights are mostly 2 ft to 3 ft coming from the S or SSW with a period that starts around 21 seconds – that's a very long-period groundswell for those first few days, but the wind is chewing it up. It’s cross-shore from the ENE at 19-22 mph, which is just killing any chance of a clean face. The wave energy is moderate to strong looking at the numbers (904 down through to 632), but with that wind, it’s messy and poor. The Friday 10th morning and afternoon push up to 5 ft from the E, but period drops to just 7 seconds – that’s weak, short-period windswell, and still cross-shore. Not worth it.
We get a brief lift around Sunday 12th July afternoon, when the combined energy jumps to 1096 – that's strong – with a 3 ft SSW swell at 16 seconds. The guidance still calls it “marginal” though, and that cross-shore ENE wind at 19 mph isn’t helping. Still, if you’re desperate, that afternoon might be the only window where it’s not a total write-off. But I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
The rest of the second week – from the 13th to the 19th – is more of the same. Tiny S swell, often with a long period (14-20 seconds, which is great for reefs like Sandtracks in theory), but that persistent 16-19 mph cross-shore ENE wind ruins it. Swell sizes hover between 2 ft and 5 ft, mostly puny. The late July afternoons show some *combined energy* numbers in the high hundreds (549, 623) but with poor conditions flagged. There’s nothing that screams "go now."
Truth is, for a break that’s fairly consistent on paper, this is a shocking run. The finder gave no recommendations at all for 16 days, and that's rare – but here it is. The winds are relentless from the same quarter, and the swell just never lines up clean. If you’re a kiter, the 5 ft east swell on the 8th and 10th with that cross-onshore might be more your thing. For a surfer? I’d hang your wettie up for a fortnight.
Rusty.
