The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at Sandtracks.
First up, it’s a rough start. For the opening week and a half, the wind is a constant problem. Strong cross-shore breezes every day, and the waves are getting chopped up. Swell energy sits in the moderate range (447–630), but with that easterly wind blowing 25–40 km/h, it’s just messy cross-chop. Not worth suiting up. Water temp’s about 80°F, pretty normal for this time of year.
Things start shifting around the 26th of July. A longer-period groundswell starts filling in. On Sunday the 26th, the morning has a moderate cross-shore breeze and a 4ft east swell with a 17-second period. Energy jumps (combined energy 1578). Not clean yet, but the afternoon turns better—cross-offshore breeze, 5ft east swell at 16 seconds. That’s the first real window.
Monday the 27th gets bigger: 7ft east swell at 16 seconds (combined energy 2278). That’s a strong, powerful groundswell. But still cross-shore wind, so there’s chop. It’s over 5ft, so not for beginners.
The real gem is Tuesday the 28th afternoon. Winds drop to just 9 mph from the northeast, cross-offshore and light. Swell holds at 6ft from the east at 13 seconds. Conditions clean right up. Energy strong at 1337. That’s your session. For experienced surfers, that’s as good as it gets in this forecast.
After that, it fades fast. Wednesday the 29th drops to 5ft with cross-shore wind again, and from the 30th onward it’s mostly poor surf with short-period junk or onshore wind. The 31st throws up a 6ft easterly wind swell but with only a 6-second period—all bump, no drive. Skip it.
So, long wait, but the last week of July delivers. Tuesday the 28th afternoon is the one to chase.
Rusty.
