The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s a rough start, and you’re looking at a solid ten days of nothing good. Don’t bother waxing up until then.
We’re stuck with Sandtracks (a reef break) for the whole period. The water temp is about average for the season, so no weirdness there.
The first week is a total bust. From the 13th of July all the way through the 24th, it’s poor conditions with a nasty cross-shore wind. The swell is tiny, mostly 2 to 3 feet, and even though the period is long (13-17 seconds), the wind messes everything up. The energy is moderate, but it’s all choppy and lumpy. The wind is from the ENE at 15-19 mph, just ruining the surface. A couple of days around the 18th and 19th see the swell hit 5 feet, but it’s short-period windswell (7-8 seconds) and still cross-shore. Not worth your time.
Then on the 25th of July, things start to look a little better. The Saturday afternoon shows a clean, cross-offshore wind from the NE at 15 mph. The swell is 3 feet from the SSW with a 16-second period, and the energy jumps up. That’s a nice groundswell, and the clean wind makes it the best option so far. The 26th (Sunday afternoon) also has a clean, cross-offshore breeze, with 3 feet of swell from the East at 13 seconds. It’s small, but it’s rideable.
The real standout is the 28th of July – Tuesday morning. The swell pumps up to 6 feet from the ENE with a 13-second period, and the energy is strong. The wind is light and cross-onshore from the SE at 6 mph, which will keep it pretty clean. That’s the biggest, most powerful swell of the whole forecast. It’s a bit much for the beginners, but for the experienced, that’s the session to circle. The afternoon is similar with 6-foot swell, but the wind gets more onshore, so hit the early one.
So, it’s a long, flat, windy stretch, then a small window of okay-to-good waves at the very end. The Tuesday the 28th is the one to chase.
Rusty.
