The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – looking at the 16-day window for Sandtracks, it's a real mixed bag. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, with onshore cross-shore winds and lumpy, poor surf. The real hope, and the only standout, comes right at the very end of the period.
The forecast starts with a long gap. From Friday, July 17th right through until Monday, July 27th, there's nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is hammering from the ENE and E, locking in a cross-shore chop that's ruining whatever small swell is around. The combined energy is moderate (394 to 611), but the conditions are just junk. The wind state is either "fresh" or "moderate" cross-shore, and the wave comment is consistently "poor surf conditions." It's a frustrating stretch.
Things start to shift a little around Monday, July 27th. The swell energy is high (1628), and the wind finally drops to a moderate breeze, turning cross-offshore from the NE. The waves are still a bit messy, but it's the first sign of life. The real standout, however, is Tuesday, July 28th, early morning. We’ve got a solid 6ft swell from the east with a decent 14-second period, boosted by a huge combined energy of 1749. The wind is offshore from the NE at 12 mph, meaning the face will be clean. This is the best on offer, but it's still a "marginal" forecast, so don't expect perfection. The swell is over 5ft, so it's stepping out of beginner territory.
Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th keep the trend alive with 5ft to 6ft easterly swells, but the wind starts to clock back around to cross-shore, taking the shine off. The energy is still strong (over 1000), but the cleanliness fades. By Friday, August 1st, the whole thing fizzles back out to small, weak, and onshore.
So, for the best bet: mark your calendar for Tuesday morning, July 28th at Sandtracks. It's a reef break that's fairly consistent, but expect crowds to be likely. The swell is 6ft from the east, and with that NE offshore breeze, it could offer some clean, long-period lines. It's your only real window in this outlook.
Rusty.
