The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming down the line for Rivermouth. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so don’t go planning your week around it just yet.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first real chance to paddle out is Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. There’s a 4ft SSW swell rolling in with a long 13-second period, bringing moderate wave energy (611). The water’s a bit colder than usual for this time of year, sitting around 64°F. It’s a gentle cross-shore breeze, but the surf forecast is marginal and tide could be a factor, so keep expectations in check.
The standout, and I mean the real standout, is Thursday morning, the 20th of August. We’ve got a solid 10ft swell from the SW with a 12-second period. That’s a lot of water moving – the combined energy here is strong, hitting 3033. The wind is a gentle cross-shore. Look, Rivermouth is a beginner spot, and this is way too big for that. This is expert territory only. The waves are going to be powerful, but the wind should keep them reasonably clean if you’re a confident surfer. This is the best the window offers, but you need to earn it.
Thursday afternoon drops off to 8ft with a cross-onshore wind, making things messy. Friday through the weekend is a write-off, with a mix of bigger winds, messy chop, and dropping swell. Sunday morning the 23rd sees a return of 7ft SSW swell with a nice 12-second period and moderate energy (1036), but the wind is cross-shore again. The surf is still just marginal.
After that, it’s a long, quiet stretch. From the 24th through the 29th of August, we get waves, but they’re small, poorly shaped, or blown out. There’s a bump on Thursday the 27th with a 8ft E swell, but it’s short-period at 10 seconds and the wind is cross, so it’s lumpy.
Another possible highlight pops up on Monday morning, the 31st of August. A 6ft E swell with a short 8-second period, but the wind is cross-offshore and clean. That’s rare. The combined energy is moderate (588). It’s not groundswell, but if the tide lines up, it could offer a few fun, clean corners.
The rest of the first week of September looks like small, short-period stuff with onshore or strong cross breezes. Not much to get excited about.
Overall, keep your eyes on Thursday morning the 20th for the biggest, most powerful surf, but only if you’re an expert. For everyone else, the cleanest chance might be Monday the 31st of August. Don’t hold your breath for epic conditions in between.
Rusty.
