The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming our way at Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of sessions that have got my heart pumping.
Right off the bat, Thursday morning the 16th is a write-off for any kind of decent paddle. We’ve got a weak little 4ft easterly windswell with a middling 11-second period, but the cross-shore wind is messing it up and the energy is only sitting at 640. The water is a very unusual 63°, which is a massive 5° colder than normal for this time of year—that’s downright frigid for July.
The next few days are pretty average. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th stay small and messy with light cross-shore chop. Saturday afternoon does see the swell bump up to 6ft from the SSW, but the period drops to a shorter 10 seconds, and the energy jumps up to 1313—moderate power, but still crummy with the cross conditions. Not worth getting excited about.
Now, Sunday the 19th is where things get interesting. The morning session is the first real standout. The wind goes completely glassy—dead calm, zero wind—and the swell is a clean 5ft out of the south at 10 seconds. The energy is moderate at 575. This is the first window where it’s actually going to feel good out there. The conditions are clean, and while the crowd profile sometimes pops up, it’s a Sunday morning so you might share a few waves. For a beginner-friendly spot that’s very consistent, this is the one to aim for in the first week.
Then Monday morning the 20th is a proper expert session. The swell is 5ft from the SSW with a solid 12-second period, and again, glassy conditions. The energy is strong at 1260. The wave comment calls it *excellent* for experienced surfers. This is the best quality of the first week without a doubt, but at 5ft it’s pushing into the zone where beginners will find it a handful.
The middle of the week has some clean moments. Tuesday the 21st has a nice cross-offshore breeze in the morning and glass in the afternoon with 4ft to 4ft SE swell. Good, clean, fun waves for the average surfer.
Hold on to your board for Saturday the 25th. This is the long-range standout, but it’s over a week away so keep an eye on the charts. The morning has a 5ft SSW groundswell with a very long 19-second period—that’s proper energy at 2376. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNE. The energy is strong, the period is epic, and it’s clean. This is the best-looking Saturday of the forecast. Later that afternoon, the swell jumps to 8ft from the SSW with an 18-second period and an energy reading of 3456. That’s serious, powerful surf. That afternoon, it’s borderline too big for anyone except experts, and the cross-shore wind will put a little texture on it. The morning window is your golden ticket.
After that, the energy fades fast. Sunday the 26th is average, and from Monday the 27th through the end of the month, it’s pretty grim. We get a run of poor conditions with strong cross-winds and small, weak swell. The period and energy drop off a cliff. There’s a brief clean-ish window on Wednesday the 29th morning with a 3ft SSW swell (428 energy) and offshore wind, but it’s small and weak. Honestly, the last few days of July and into the 31st are best spent doing something else.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re going out this week, Sunday morning the 19th is the best bet for clean, glassy fun for everyone. If you can wait, Saturday morning the 25th looks like the true standout of the whole forecast—big, clean, and powerful. Rivermouth has a few gems hidden in there.
Rusty.
