The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks at Rivermouth. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real gems hiding in there if you’re patient.
The first real action kicks off Saturday morning, July 18th. We’ve got a clean 4 ft south swell rolling in with a solid 12-second period. The wind is glassy, dead calm, and the water is running at 64° – that’s 5° colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want a good spring suit. The combined energy is moderate at 690, and for a beginner-friendly spot that’s very consistent, this is a top pick. The swell direction is straight from the south, which is exactly what this break wants to see. It’s a great morning for a long session.
Sunday morning, July 19th, keeps the good times rolling. Another glassy morning with a 4 ft south swell, 10-second period, and clean conditions. The energy drops a bit to 575, but it’s still a very solid, fun wave for a beginner. The water temp anomaly is only given for the first record, so I won’t repeat it.
Now, we hit a bit of a lull. From Sunday afternoon through to Wednesday, July 22nd, the surf gets smaller and the wind is messy. There’s a few days of cross-shore chop and smaller swells, nothing that’s really worth getting excited about. The best of that stretch is Monday morning, July 20th, with a 7 ft SW swell, but it’s a short 9-second period and cross-shore wind, so the quality is just… okay. The energy jumps up to 1678, which is a solid moderate, but it’s not clean.
Here’s where it gets interesting. Friday, July 24th, is shaping up to be the standout. Friday afternoon is the real deal. We’ve got a 7 ft south-southwest swell with a 15-second period – that’s proper groundswell, long lines and loads of power. The energy is a strong 2209. The wind is glassy, absolutely dead calm. This is a big swell for a beginner spot, so it’s more for the experienced crew. Because it’s a Rivermouth, that long period will push through clean and make for some beautiful, longer walls. The morning of the 24th is also good, with an 8 ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, but with a cross-offshore breeze, it’s clean but not as perfect as the afternoon.
After that, we get a few days of smaller, wind-affected surf. Nothing terrible, but nothing to write home about. The combined energy drops back down to the 700-1200 range.
Then, on Monday, July 27th, we get a little gift. A 4 ft south-southwest swell with a 14-second period, and glassy offshore winds in the morning. The energy is a moderate 631. It’s not a monster, but it’s clean and fun for a beginner session.
Looking further out, the end of the month and start of August gets a bit wild. On Thursday, July 30th, the swell is predicted to hit 10 ft from the SW with a 12-second period and a massive energy reading of 4138. That is way too big for this break, and the wind is a cross-shore chop. It’s a pass for paddling, but if you’re into kiting, it might be worth a look.
The final week has some fresh offshore winds with 7 ft to 8 ft south swells, but the wind is strong, 18-21 mph, and the period is a bit short at 10 seconds. The energy is still moderate to strong, but it’s a windy, raw setup. Not the best for a clean paddle session.
So, to wrap it up: your absolute best bet is Friday afternoon, July 24th. That glassy, 7 ft, 15-second south-southwest swell is the pick of the 16 days. Get there early. The Saturday morning of the 18th is a solid second choice for a cleaner, smaller session.
Stay stoked, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
