Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Rivermouth has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a bit of a wild ride ahead, so buckle up.
The water is sitting at 64° right now, which is a whopping 5° colder than usual for this time of year. That’s a seriously chilly anomaly—you’ll be wanting a thicker wetsuit, no doubt about it.
The forecast kicks off with a big, powerful pulse of swell. On Friday the 3rd of July, we’re looking at a solid 10ft swell from the SW with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a lot of energy—massive, actually (4172). The wind is cross-off in the morning, but the problem is the size. Down at Rivermouth, a 10ft swell is just too much. This is a beginner-friendly spot, and when the ocean is that juiced up, it’s not for the faint of heart. By afternoon, the wind swings cross-on, making it even more of a handful. This is a day for experts only, and even then, the quality is questionable. I’d say give this one a miss unless you’re a local charger who knows every ripple.
Saturday the 4th of July is where we start to see the real standout of this outlook. The morning is absolute gold. We’ve got a 8ft swell from the SE, still with a long 12-second period, but the magic is in the wind: glassy. That’s right, absolute dead calm. The wave energy is still strong (1773), and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the pick of the forecast. The size is still pushing the limits for beginners, but for an intermediate or advanced surfer, this is going to be clean, lined-up, and well-shaped. The swell direction is S, which is a good match for the optimum here. Expect it to be a bit of a circus, though—crowds are *sometimes* an issue at Rivermouth, and with conditions this good on a weekend, it’ll be busy.
Sunday the 5th of July drops down to a more manageable 5ft from the SE, with a clean cross-off wind from the NNE. The energy is moderate now (638), and conditions are clean. This is a solid, fun day for a wider range of surfers, including confident beginners. The morning is the window.
The swell fades through Monday and Tuesday, with smaller waves around 3ft to 3ft. The quality is ordinary, though Tuesday morning offers a glassy, offshore start. Not much to write home about.
Then we get another interesting pulse on Thursday the 9th of July. An 8ft south swell rolls in with a 11-second period. The energy spikes hard (2768). And the morning? Glassy again. Zero wind. This is another top-tier window for the experienced crew. It's big, it's clean, and it will be lined up. The afternoon sees the wind turn cross-onshore and the quality drops, so get out early.
Friday the 10th of July holds some clean, smaller swell at 6ft from the S, with glassy conditions in the morning. Nice for a relaxed session.
The following week gets a bit mixed up. There’s a risky period around Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of July with stormy conditions and strong, messy winds. The swell jumps back up, but with lumpy cross-chop, it’s not pretty. Monday the 13th of July is worth a mention—a 5ft south swell with a 13-second period and glassy conditions. That’s a nice reset, and the energy is still healthy (762). The afternoon stays glassy too. A good, clean day for the intermediate crew.
The last few days of the window see some smaller, ordinary surf. Wednesday the 15th of July is a write-off with strong winds and tiny waves. Thursday the 16th sees a very long-period swell (18 seconds) from the SSW, but it’s small at 3ft. That kind of period can create some weird, straight waves at a spot like this, so it’s a bit of a wildcard. Friday the 17th of July offers a clean, offshore morning with 3ft waves—good for a cruise.
Saturday the 18th of July closes things out with a 8ft to 8ft swell from the E with a short 9 to 10-second period, and strong cross-shore winds. That’s windy and messy. The combined energy is solid (over 1000), but with that short period and heavy wind, this set-up at a beach-and-reef break like Rivermouth might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Overall, your best bets are crystal clear: the glassy, clean mornings on Saturday the 4th and Thursday the 9th of July for the experienced crowd. For the rest of us, Sunday the 5th and Monday the 13th offer the most friendly, fun conditions.
Stay stoked, and don’t forget the booties if you’re heading in this week—that water is cold.
