The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid run of surf shaping up at Rivermouth, starting Sunday the 19th of July. The water is sitting at 64°, which is about 4° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a notable chill, so you’ll want a good wetsuit. The first few days are looking promising, with a real standout on Friday the 24th.
Sunday morning the 19th kicks off with some clean, glassy 4ft lines from the south, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 594, and with zero wind, it’s going to be a smooth, fun session. The afternoon picks up a touch to 5ft from the SSE, still glassy, and the energy bumps up to 699. Not massive, but clean and welcoming.
Monday the 20th sees a jump in size. The morning brings 8ft from the SW with a 10-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind. That’s a lot of power – the combined energy is 2257 – and it’s clean. But at 8ft, this is getting into expert territory. The afternoon drops to 4ft from the SE, but the wind swings cross-on, so it gets a bit messy.
Tuesday the 21st is back to a more manageable 4ft from the SE in the morning, period 11 seconds, and it’s glassy. Clean, easy waves. The afternoon is smaller at 3ft from the SSW, but the period is a long 15 seconds, which will give it some nice shape for a point or river mouth session. Light cross-on wind though.
Wednesday the 22nd morning is tidy: 4ft from the SSW, 13-second period, and a clean cross-off breeze. The afternoon drops to 3ft with a cross-shore wind.
Thursday the 23rd morning has 5ft from the SSW, but the period is a short 8 seconds, and wind is strong cross-off at 12 mph. It’s clean but the short period won’t give much push. The afternoon is a write-off with 19 mph winds and 7ft messy swell.
Now, here’s the standout. Friday the 24th of July. The morning is pristine: 5ft from the SSW with a very long 18-second period, glassy conditions, and a combined energy of 2046. That’s proper groundswell – long lines, plenty of power, and clean. This is for experienced surfers given the size and period, but if you can handle it, this is the best session of the forecast. The afternoon is bigger at 7ft from the south, 16-second period, and a massive 2509 energy, but the wind goes cross-shore and it gets a bit lumpy.
Saturday the 25th is a step down: 5ft to 5ft, cross-shore winds, longer periods but not as clean. Sunday the 26th morning is glassy again with 4ft from the SSW, 12-second period – a nice little recovery session.
The run from Monday the 27th through to mid-week goes downhill. Monday has lumpy cross-shore winds, Tuesday the 28th brings 12ft from the SSE with a short 9-second period and onshore wind – that’s a messy, heavy closeout. Wednesday the 29th has 12ft to 10ft from the ESE, but it’s simply too big for this break, even if the wind is light. Thursday the 30th is more manageable at 7ft from the ESE, but still cross-shore. Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st of August are small and average.
The final weekend, Sunday the 2nd of August morning, gives a last little blip: 7ft from the SSW, short 7-second period, but clean with a cross-off breeze. Then Monday the 3rd is windy and messy.
So, if you’re picking your moment, Friday the 24th of July morning is the clear winner – that long-period groundswell, glassy conditions, and serious energy. For a more relaxed session, Sunday the 19th or Tuesday the 21st morning are your best bets.
Rusty.
