Table - best surf conditions forecast for Rivermouth over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here, checking in on Rivermouth for the next couple of weeks. Gotta level with you – the first few days are a bit of a letdown, but there’s one morning in the second week that’s going to make it all worth it.
The water’s sitting at 65°, which is about 4° colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want a thicker suit, especially for the early sessions.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Monday the 13th of July. It’s not the best, but it’s something. Monday morning has a 7ft east swell with a short 8-second period, and the wave energy is moderate (1068). The wind is a light cross-shore from the NE at 10 km/h, so it’s a bit rippled. Monday afternoon drops to 6ft, still from the east, but the wind picks up to 15 km/h, making it messier. Not a standout.
Tuesday the 14th of July is a totally different story. Both morning and afternoon are glassy, with a light offshore or variable breeze. The swell is a solid 6ft and 6ft from the east, with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate (687 and 590). This is your best bet for the first week – clean, fun waves, and the break is very consistent. Crowds are sometimes a factor, so you might have some company, but the quality will be worth it.
Wednesday the 15th of July starts clean early with a light cross-offshore wind and a 5ft easterly swell at 10 seconds. The afternoon turns a little onshore, with waves dropping to 5ft. It’s rideable, but nothing special.
From Thursday the 16th through the end of the first week, things get tricky. Thursday has some 4ft easterly and a 4ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-shore and the periods are short. The energy is moderate (around 596 and 742). It’s marginal. Friday the 17th of July has a 3ft easterly in the morning, but the wind picks up to 20 km/h from the SW. The afternoon jumps to 8ft from the SSW with a 13-second period and very strong energy (3325), but the wind is a strong 25 km/h cross-shore, making it lumpy. Saturday the 18th of July stays big, around 7ft to 8ft from the south, but the wind is cranking at 20 to 30 km/h from the NE. That’s a fresh breeze, creating a lumpy cross-chop. This is for experts only, and honestly, with that wind, it’s looking more like a kite session than a paddle session.
Sunday the 19th of July stays messy with moderate cross-shore winds and dropping swell, down to 5ft. The energy fades through the early part of the second week, with small waves and onshore winds from Monday the 20th of July.
Now, here’s the real story. Tuesday the 21st of July. Circle it. The morning is a standout. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the SSW with an incredible 18-second period – that’s very long-period groundswell. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE at 10 km/h, keeping it clean. The combined energy is strong (1591). This is a Rivermouth kind of swell. The long period means the waves will have real shape and power, especially good for a river mouth setup. The afternoon is still good with a 6ft SSW swell at 16 seconds and a light cross wind, but the morning is the pick.
Wednesday the 22nd of July holds onto that SSW swell, around 5ft, with a 15-second period. The wind is cross-shore or light cross-on, so it’s a bit less clean than Tuesday, but still surfable with moderate energy.
After that, it’s a long dry spell. Thursday the 23rd of July sees strong winds from the SW at 35 km/h, with an 8ft swell that’s just lumpy and poor. Friday the 24th through to Monday the 28th of July is a long stretch of small, weak, and messy surf. The energy drops to low numbers, with most of the time in the 100-400 range and scores at zero. There’s a 10-day gap of poor conditions from the 23rd of July until the very end of the month. Tuesday the 28th of July shows a small 4ft swell from the SSW with a 12-second period and light wind, but it’s only marginal.
So, the bottom line: Tuesday the 14th of July is your cleanest, funnest day of the first week. For the real power and quality, you want to be on the water on Tuesday morning, the 21st of July. That’s the one that’s worth the wait.
Rusty.
