Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the surf on offer over the next couple of weeks for Rivermouth. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s some real juice building for the second week, so hang tight.
Right now, there’s nothing doing for a few days. The first proper surf window kicks off Saturday morning, July 4th, and that’s the standout of the whole run. Rivermouth is a beginner-friendly, very consistent spot, and early Saturday morning we’ve got clean conditions – glassy, with a light WNW breeze at 3 mph. The swell is a solid 8 ft from the SE, with a healthy 12-second period, so you’re looking at proper groundswell with good shape and decent gaps between sets. The combined swell energy is strong at 1773. Water temp is 64°F, which is 4°F colder than normal – that’s notably cool for this time of year, so grab a thicker suit. It’s a big swell for beginners, though – over 5 ft – so if you’re new, maybe sit this one out or stick to the inside. The wave direction (S) matches the optimum for the break, and with sometimes crowds, you might have company but not a zoo.
Saturday afternoon drops off a bit with a cross-on breeze and smaller 7 ft SE swell, and the quality slips. Sunday morning, July 5th, brings a cleaner 5 ft SE swell with a 6 mph cross-off wind – decent but nothing special. Sunday afternoon gets cross-shore and smaller. Monday, July 6th, the swell drops to 3 ft – surfable but very ordinary. Tuesday morning, July 7th, has a tiny 2 ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and offshore wind (NW at 6 mph) – glassy clean, but the energy is weak (221), so it’s more of a longboard session.
Then Wednesday, July 8th, things get messy – a short-period 4 ft SW swell with strong 16 mph winds, poor quality. Thursday July 9th through Saturday July 11th sees a solid S swell building, 8 ft down to 6 ft, but the winds are cross-on or onshore, so the surface gets rippled. Still, the period is 14-15 seconds, so there’s plenty of energy (up to 2279 on Thursday morning), but the wind is a letdown. That stretch is more for the dedicated.
After that, from Sunday July 12th through Wednesday July 15th, it’s pretty flat or tiny – combined energy under 200 most days, with messy cross-winds and poor surf. A real blank run.
But then, hold onto your boards – Friday July 17th morning looks massive: a 13 ft SW swell with an 11-second period, combined energy at 5427, strong to very strong. The problem? That’s way too big for Rivermouth – over 8 ft, so only for experts, and even then, the break might not handle it well. Winds are cross-off (WSW 12 mph) so the face could be clean, but with that size and period, it’s going to be heavy and tough.
Saturday July 18th morning sees an 8 ft S swell, 12 seconds, and offshore winds (NW 16 mph) – clean, powerful, but again on the big side. Combined energy 1958. Sunday July 19th then gets hammered by 34 mph winds and heavy rain – forget it.
So, the standout is definitely Saturday morning July 4th – that’s the one to circle. After that, the Thursday July 9th morning has the biggest clean-ish swell window but with cross-on wind, so not perfect. The long-range Friday July 17th is a monster but too big for most. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but right now, that first Saturday is your best bet.
Rusty out.
