The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, to be honest. There’s some serious juice in the water at times, but the wind gods are going to make you work for it. You gotta pick your moments.
The first real window that gets me fired up is on Tuesday, the 25th of August. We’re looking at a 5ft swell out of the SSW early in the morning with a 15 second period. The energy is moderate, and with just a light cross-onshore breeze, it should be surfable. Rivermouth is a super consistent break, and this direction is right in its wheelhouse. Water temp is 65°F, which is a touch cooler than normal, so bring the booties or at least a good spring suit.
The next day, Wednesday the 26th, the swell pushes up a notch to around 6ft, and the period stretches out to a very long 16 seconds – that’s some serious groundswell energy. It’s a bigger, more powerful wave. The caveat with that long a period is it can make a beach break close out, but a rivermouth should handle it. The wind is more of a factor though, with a stronger cross-onshore component, so it might be a bit lumpy.
Now, here’s the main event. Look at Sunday, the 30th of August. It starts off with a clean 7ft of WSW swell in the morning with a fresh cross-offshore breeze. The energy is solidly moderate. But the afternoon is where it’s at. The swell jumps up to 8ft, the period stretches, and the wind stays cross-offshore, keeping it clean. The energy is strong. This is a serious, powerful day. This is one for the big-wave crew, no question. It’s well over the 8ft mark, so it’s strictly for experts. Beginners should be watching from the beach.
The day after, Monday the 31st, still has some size at around 8ft, but the wind becomes more cross-shore and it looks less inviting. Sunday is definitely the pick of the bunch.
Into the first week of September, there’s a small glimmer on Wednesday morning, the 2nd. A clean-looking 5ft of easterly swell at a short 9 seconds, but with a light cross-offshore breeze, it could offer some fun, clean waves if the sand is right.
So, there you have it. The standout is Sunday, the 30th of August – big, clean and powerful. The 25th and 26th are solid backup days, and there’s a wildcard at the start of September. It’s a waiting game, but there are waves to be had if you’re keen and know what you’re doing.
