The Lowdown
Right then, I’ve had a proper look at the charts for Ristorante or La Toscana, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a solid 16-day window here, but the surf is almost non-existent for the vast majority of it. Honestly, there are big gaps with no real waves on offer. From the 18th of August all the way through to the 2nd of September, the score is a big fat zero across the board. You’ll see tiny little bumps here and there, but nothing that’s worth paddling out for. It’s a proper flat spell.
Let’s walk through it. Starting Tuesday the 18th, the water is absolutely roasting – 84°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, like bath water. But the waves? Gutless. Tuesday morning sees a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW with a weak period of 6 seconds and only 28 combined energy – that’s weak. The wind is glassy from the ENE, which would be perfect if there was any power, but it’s described as “poor surf conditions.” Not worth it.
Wednesday the 19th is even worse – a pathetic 0.3ft swell. Thursday the 20th bumps up to 3ft from the WSW again, period of just 5 seconds and 31 combined energy. The morning looks clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but that swell is all mush. You’d be fighting for scraps. This pattern of tiny, weak, short-period swell continues day after day. Friday, Saturday, Sunday – all the same story: clean mornings with cross-offshore winds, but the swell is consistently under 3ft and the period is lousy, never getting above 6 seconds. The combined energy is always in the weak two-digit range (23, 38, 28...). It’s just not happening.
There is a tiny glimmer on Monday the 25th with a 3ft swell from the NW, but that’s accompanied by a moderate cross-onshore wind and a risk of thunderstorms. That’s a no-go. The following days are completely flat from the 27th to the 30th of August – zero wave energy. You’d be better off taking the boards in for a repair.
Looking into the first few days of September, it’s more of the same. Tuesday the 1st has a 2ft, 6-second S swell with 18 combined energy, and a clean cross-offshore breeze, but again, it’s just too small and weak to get excited about. Wednesday the 2nd is equally small.
So, the reality check? There are no standouts here. Not one single session gets a recommendation. For a reef break that needs a decent SW groundswell to work, this is a total bust. The wind is often okay, especially in the mornings, but there’s simply no swell to work with. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might get a handful of knee-high sliders on a clean morning, but honestly, it’s a kite or a foil board time. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the persistent onshore afternoon breezes and the lack of real swell.
Hang in there, forecasts can change, but for now, save your energy.
