The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s cut to the chase – La Toscana (Ristorante) is looking at a flat spell for the next 16 days. The finder didn’t give us any solid recommendations, so we’re dealing with a long stretch of small, weak surf. The water’s a warm 84°, which is about 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a serious anomaly, and you’ll feel it like a bath.
From Tuesday, 18 August, it’s a tough go. The combined energy of all swells is weak, with values like 28 on Tuesday morning, and it barely picks up. The best we see is on Tuesday, 25 August, when the energy hits 105 (moderate) with a 4ft swell from the WSW, but that’s ruined by a fresh 19 mph cross-shore wind from the SSE – lumpy and choppy. Not worth it.
From Wednesday, 27 August, through to Wednesday, 2 September, the energy is mostly zero or single digits. The only bright spot is Sunday morning, 23 August, where the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” with a 3ft swell from the SSW (6-second period) and energy at 82 (weak). That’s the only time the score even hits a 1 out of 10, and it’s nothing special.
The swell stays under 5ft the whole time, so it’s not too big for beginners, but it’s not big enough for anyone else. The short periods (4-6 seconds) mean the waves are weak. If you’re desperate, the glassy conditions on Wednesday morning, 19 August (1ft, SW, 5-second period) or Saturday morning, 29 August (1ft, WSW, 5-second period) might give you a few clean little waves, but crowds are “sometimes” a factor – though I doubt anyone’s out with this flatness.
It’s a rough patch. The area just isn’t doing anything. Hang tight, things can change, but for now, it’s a bust.
Rusty.
