The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for our local patch.
Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for any kind of decent surf around here. We’ve got a long stretch of flat or tiny, messy waves that just aren’t worth paddling out for. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the end of the month, and even then, it’s a conditional affair.
Right now, and for the next several days, the water is still warm – around 67°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s something for the swimmers. But for us? The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is all over the place. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, every single session is a no-go – flat spells, onshore chop, or just zero energy. There’s a run of completely flat days from the 27th afternoon all the way through to the 30th, with nothing but clean but empty water. It’s a proper dead zone.
Now, there is a flicker of hope on Monday the 31st of August. We see a pulse of swell coming in from the NW, with a wave height of 7 ft, but that’s a steep one. The period is only 6 seconds, so that’s a short, stormy kind of wave, and the combined energy is moderate (320). The wind is cross-offshore at 19 mph, so the surface will be clean, but that size and short period will make it a bumpy, powerful mess. Rhos-On-Sea is a point break, and it’s inconsistent and rarely breaks, so it’s not the most reliable spot to begin with. The swell is coming from the NW, which is its optimum direction, but with that short period, it’s likely to be a bit of a washing machine, especially for a point break. This one is for confident intermediate surfers only – it’s way too big for beginners. Honestly, with that onshore wind setup and the short-period, choppy nature, this might be more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfing.
Other than that, the rest of the outlook is a wasteland. A few tiny, ankle-biters on the 1st and 2nd of September, but nothing that’s going to get the heart rate up. The wind stays clean for a lot of those days, but there’s simply no swell to work with. The last week of the forecast is mostly flat, with a few whispers of 0.7 ft from the NNW, but that’s just a ripple.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got one possible window on the 31st of August, but it’s a short-period, 7 ft NW swell with clean cross-offshore wind. It’s the only standout, but it’s a rough one. If you’re a confident surfer and don’t mind a bit of a wrestle, that might be your only chance. For everyone else, it’s a long wait for something better. This kind of blank run is a bit more normal for this area, so don’t lose hope – forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
