Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for North Wales. Honestly, it’s a bit of a grim picture for the next couple of weeks at Rhos-On-Sea. There’s no surf at all for the first five days, from Saturday the 4th right through until Wednesday the 8th. The sea is flat as a pancake with no swell to speak of. We do see a touch of water temperature anomaly here; the water is sitting at a balmy 62°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s not much comfort when there are no waves.
The first sign of life comes on Thursday the 9th afternoon, but it’s a poor showing. You’re looking at a weak little 1ft wave from the NE with a period of just 3 seconds. The combined swell energy is a measly 3, so it’s barely a ripple, and the wind is a gentle cross-onshore, making it fairly choppy. Not one to get excited about.
Friday the 10th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning sees a 2ft easterly swell, still short period at 3 seconds, with a moderate cross-shore wind chopping it up. The afternoon picks up slightly to 3ft from the NE, period creeping up to 4 seconds, and combined swell energy hits 20, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. It’s a write-off.
Saturday the 11th morning is similar: 3ft, NE, 4-second period, but with a light cross-onshore breeze. The afternoon improves a touch, with a 3ft wave from the NNE, and the wind turning cross-shore, but the period is still only 4 seconds and it’s a cross-chop. You’ll struggle to find a ride.
Sunday the 12th morning offers the best conditions of the whole window, but it’s still not good. The swell is 2ft from the NNE, 4-second period, and combined energy is 15. The wind, however, is glassy – a 5 km/h light air from the WNW. That means the surface will be clean, but the wave itself has barely any push. The afternoon is a light cross-onshore, killing it again.
From Monday the 13th onwards, it’s all 1ft to 2ft dribble with short periods from the NE or N, and consistently poor conditions with onshore or cross-onshore winds. There’s a brief moment of glass on Wednesday the 15th afternoon and Thursday the 16th morning, but the swell is down to 1ft and 0.7ft respectively, so it's still flat.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the glassy Sunday morning on the 12th. If you just want to get wet and bob around on a clean but tiny 2ft wave, that’s your window. There’s nothing else that even comes close.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, this is a kite-surfing setup way more than a paddle-surfing one. The swell is too small and weak, and the wind is mostly side-shore or onshore. The break is a point, but it's inconsistent and rarely breaks in these conditions. It’s a tough run, but that’s the way it goes in this neck of the woods sometimes. Stay patient.
