The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Rhos-On-Sea. I’ve gotta be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing good on the cards, and it’s going to be a real test of patience.
The forecast kicks off with a sniff of hope on Wednesday, the 22nd of July, but even that’s a bit of a stretch. The first proper surfable day we see is Wednesday morning, with a small NW swell coming in at 4ft. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s not going to have much punch. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WNW at 6 mph, which will keep the surface clean. The combined energy is weak, sitting at just (95), so it’s not exactly going to get your heart racing. The water temperature is 66°, which is a whopping 8° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and you’ll feel it, but the surf itself is pretty ordinary. For a point break like Rhos-On-Sea, which is inconsistent and only really exposed to NW swell, it’s a fleeting glimpse of something rideable, but nothing to write home about.
After that Wednesday, it’s a desert. We’ve got a solid gap from Thursday the 23rd of July right through to Monday the 28th of July, with nothing but flat, poor surf conditions. The wind shifts, the swell disappears, and it’s all just clean-looking water with no waves. This is a classic blank run for this area, and it’s pretty normal for a spot like Rhos-On-Sea when the swell window isn’t working.
Then, on Tuesday the 28th of July, we get a bit of a different story. The morning shows a bigger swell at 6ft from the WNW, with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of (266) – that’s moderate energy, finally. But here’s the catch: we’ve got a fresh breeze from the W at 22 mph, blowing cross-offshore. That’s a lot of wind. For a point break, this setup is a bit messy. The waves will be there, but they’ll be bumpy and hard to manage. It’s more of a challenge for experts than a fun session for the average surfer. The afternoon flatlines again, so you’ve got a short window.
Beyond that, from the 29th of July into early August, it’s all flat. We’re talking about a second week with virtually no surfable waves. A few tiny pulses of 1ft on the 3rd of August, but with a period of 4 seconds and a moderate cross-shore wind, it’s not worth getting wet for.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a standout, Wednesday the 22nd of July is the only real contender, but it’s a poor one. The best on offer is that Wednesday morning session, and even then, it’s just a small, weak wave. For the rest of the run, you’re better off leaving the board in the shed. The forecasts can change, but as it stands, it’s a long wait for something worth paddling out for.
Rusty.
