The Lowdown

Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you. Looking at the charts for Point Burwell over the next couple of weeks, it’s a pretty bleak picture. There’s no real surf to get excited about at all.

Right from the first couple of days, it’s a no-go. We’re looking at nothing but tiny, weak wind swell, if you can even call it that. The combined wave energy barely scratches double digits, with a reading of just 3 on the Thursday morning, and it gets worse from there. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making a messy, choppy mess of things. The swell direction is all over the shop from the SW and SSW, but the height is just pathetic – nothing above 2ft for the whole first week, and periods are short, around 3 or 4 seconds. This is small, weak, and choppy. Not worth paddling out for.

Forget the weekend, too. Saturday the 8th has a tiny 2ft to 2ft swell with a moderate breeze ruining any chance of shape. The water temp is sitting around 72°, which is about average for this time of year, so at least it’s not freezing, but that’s the only good news.

Then we hit a big, fat, dry gap. From the 11th of August all the way through to the 20th, there isn’t a single recommendation. The combined wave energy flatlines to zero. We get a few days of glassy or clean conditions around the 11th and 12th, but there’s absolutely no swell. It’s a total blank. A couple of days with a clean cross-offshore wind appear on the 15th and 16th, but again, no waves to ride.

This is a grim run. Point Burwell is just an exposed point, and when there’s no swell in the water, there’s nothing to be done. For the entire 16-day outlook, the best I can say is there's not a single standout or even a mediocre session on the cards. It’s a consistent dry spell, which happens sometimes.

Rusty.
