The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about Wolfe Island. I’ve looked at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. The surf is a rare sight here, and this forecast is a dry one for the most part. We’re looking at a long, quiet run with only a couple of tiny windows that might wet your board, but absolutely nothing to get excited about.

The first day we have any swell at all is Tuesday, the 8th of September. We’re talking about a tiny little 0.7 ft westerly swell with a pathetic 3-second period. The combined energy is a measly (1). It’s clean, with a light NNE offshore breeze, but honestly, that’s not surf – that’s a lake ripple. You’ll be bobbing on your board, not riding. That afternoon, the wind swings cross-off, but the swell is gone.

Wednesday the 9th looks a bit bigger, but it’s a write-off. A 2 ft to 3 ft southerly swell is there, but it’s getting hammered by a strong 19 mph onshore wind. The energy is still weak (6 to 29), and it’s just a messy, blown-out combo. Not worth it.

Thursday the 10th offers the biggest swell of the entire period, with 5 ft from the west and a 6-second period. The combined energy hits moderate at (139). But look at the wind – a fresh 16 to 19 mph wind from the west and WNW, whipping a cross-shore chop all over it. It’s going to be a lumpy, bumpy mess. The setup is a point break, but with that wind and that short period, it’s just not going to hold shape. This is more of a kiteboarding kind of day than a paddle surf day. For a beginner, that 5 ft is pushing their limit, and with the chop, it’s no-go.

After that, the swell drops right off. From Friday the 11th right through to the end of the forecast on the 23rd of September, we’re staring at a 12-day gap with absolutely no swell to speak of. The combined energy is zero. It’s flat. There are some glorious mornings with glassy conditions and offshore winds (like the 14th, 16th, 21st, and 22nd), but with no waves to push you, you’re just floating. It’s a long, dry spell.

The only standout, if you can even call it that, is that Thursday the 10th. It’s the biggest swell of the window, but the wind is just wrong. It’s a poor-quality option with a moderate energy (139). For a spot that’s “fairly consistent” for Wolfe Island, this is a grim run. The water temp is about average for the time of year, but that doesn’t help when there’s nothing to ride.

So, the honest truth? Leave the boards in the car. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing here worth paddling out for.

Rusty.
