The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for Sombrio Beach. I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and quiet. There’s a long stretch of nothing special on the cards, so don’t go getting your hopes up for any hero sessions just yet.
The pattern is clear: small, weak swell and tricky winds are the story for the first week. We’ve got a few moments where the wind drops off and the ocean goes glassy, but the waves themselves are just too small and weak to get excited about. The first real chance of anything surfable is Wednesday afternoon, August 5th. The wind will go glassy, and we’ll see a tiny 3ft swell from the west with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is only a weak 135 (moderate wave energy), so it’s not going to be powerful. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Thursday morning, August 6th, is much the same story – glassy conditions with a 2.6ft west swell and a combined energy of 131 (moderate wave energy). Again, it’s ridable, but nothing to write home about. Then Saturday morning, August 8th, the wind goes glassy again with a 3ft west swell and a combined energy of 127 (moderate wave energy). Still small and weak.
The best chance we get in this whole 16-day window is actually a bit further out. Monday morning, August 10th, we’ve got glassy conditions with a 3.6ft west swell, a period of 9 seconds, and a combined energy of 215 (moderate wave energy). That’s the biggest and most promising combo we see. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
After that, things get messy again. The swell sticks around the 3.3ft to 3.9ft range, but the wind turns onshore or cross-shore, ruining the surface. The combined energy does climb to 310 (moderate wave energy) on the morning of August 13th, but it’s a Thursday and the wind is a light cross-shore, so it’s marginal at best.
We do have a one-off on the morning of the 18th of August: glassy, 2ft west swell, but with a long 15-second period. The combined energy is 233 (moderate wave energy), and that long period will mean longer waits between sets. Just a tiny, clean wave for the patient soul.
Bottom line: There’s no standout, no day to circle on the calendar. The 10th of August morning is the best on offer, but it’s still only a 3.6ft west swell. For Sombrio, a beach and reef setup, the swell is small and the wind is often messy. This is a classic “check the forecast again tomorrow” scenario. It won’t stay poor forever, but this run is a real test of patience.
