The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at this entire 16-day stretch, and I gotta say, it’s a tough one. For the first week and a half, there’s just nothing to get excited about. The swell is tiny, the periods are short, and the wave comment is almost always “poor surf conditions.” There’s a big gap with no real surf on offer until we get right to the end of the month.
Let’s start with Monday the 14th of July. The board is basically dry. We’ve got a tiny 1ft NW swell with a weak 8-second period, and the combined energy is a measly 19. That’s not a wave, that’s a ripple. Tuesday morning is glassy, but with no swell, it doesn’t matter. The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is about 7° warmer than normal – that's very unusual, feels like bath water for this time of year.
This dead pattern just drags on. Wednesday through to Saturday the 19th, it’s the same story: 1ft to 2ft, periods of 4 or 5 seconds, and all the energy values sitting below 35. The wind is all over the place but it doesn’t matter because there’s no swell to work with.
Sunday the 20th of July we see a little jump. Monday afternoon has a 4ft NNE swell with an energy of 108 (moderate), but the period is a weak 6 seconds and it’s cross-shore. It still gets a “poor surf conditions” label. Not worth a paddle.
Finally, the morning of Tuesday the 21st of July shows a glimmer. We get a 3ft NNE swell, again a 6-second period, but it's glassy. The combined energy is 102 (moderate) and the comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the first real chance in this outlook, but it’s not a standout. It’s just not horrible.
Then it drops back off again. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd bring a bit more size – a 4ft NW swell on Thursday morning with 129 energy – but the wind is onshore and the comment is poor. It’s a mess.
The real standout, the one thing that is worth circling on the calendar, is Sunday the 27th of July. The Monday the 28th is close, but listen to this: On Monday the 27th of July, the morning shows a 5ft NW swell with a solid 11-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits a strong 663. The wind is light cross-shore from the NNE, and the comment is “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” but the overall picture is the best we’ve seen by a long shot. This is the only time in this whole window where the swell size is over 4ft and the period is in double digits. It’s a point-and-reef friendly period. The water is still warm, no anomaly given for that week, but it’ll be fine. Crowds at Plentzia are listed as “sometimes,” so with a decent swell like this, expect company. This is the one to aim for.
After that, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th hold a 4ft-5ft NW swell, but the period drops to 9-10 seconds and the wind gets worse again. Wednesday morning the 29th is glassy with a 5ft NW swell (344 energy) and “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but it’s no contest to the Monday.
So to wrap it up: the first two weeks are a write-off. Tiny, weak, and crummy. The only true highlight is Monday the 27th of July. That 5ft NW groundswell with the 11-second period is your best shot. The rest is for beginners on a foamie or for sitting on the beach.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
