The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with ya – the next 16 days at Opoutere Beach are a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got some small windows of clean, glassy surf, but they’re brief and the swell’s never really cranking. The water’s sitting at a pretty average 59°F for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
The first real shot at something decent is on Monday, July 27 morning. The wind swings offshore from the WSW at a light 6 mph, and we’ve got a tiny 2ft swell rolling in from the east with a nice long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (131). It’s small, but clean – you’ll be scratching for waves, but it’s surfable. That glassy moment on Tuesday, July 28 afternoon is even better for the same size swell, with the wind dropping to glass. The energy bumps up a touch (136). Still, it’s small.
Wednesday, July 29 morning is the standout of the first week. It’s glassy, the swell is 3ft from the ESE with a 13-second period, and the combined energy jumps to a solid moderate (231). That’s the best wave shape you’ll see for a while – clean, lined up, and worth a paddle if you’ve got a log.
After that, it gets messy. Friday July 31 brings a lumpy 7ft wind swell from the north with a crap 8-second period and strong 19 mph winds. That’s expert-only territory if you’re brave, but the quality is poor. The following week is mostly a write-off with strong southerly winds and choppy conditions. There’s a brief glimmer on Thursday, August 6 morning – glassy, 4ft from the ESE with an 11-second period and a jump in energy to 595 (moderate). That’s promising, but it’s a one-off before the wind turns again.
Bottom line: if you’re keen, hit Wednesday morning, July 29 or Thursday morning, August 6 for the cleanest small waves. The rest is either blown out or too small. For a sandbar break, it’s not the worst run, but we’ve seen better.
