The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one for the Opoutere Beach (New Zealand) area. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and forgettable surf ahead. The first week is basically a write-off, and even when the second week tries to stir a little, it’s nothing to write home about.

Starting off, the swell is tiny and the energy is low. Thursday the 10th through to the morning of Monday the 23rd of September, we’re looking at a span of almost two weeks where the waves are just not cooperating. The combined swell energy is barely cracking double digits most days, hanging around a weak 10 to 95 (kilojoules per square metre) – just a whisper of energy. Those early days, the swell sits at a pathetic 1 ft to 1 ft, mostly from the NE with a long period of 13 to 14 seconds. That long period means it’s a groundswell, but with that little height, it’s not going to stand up. Winds are offshore or cross-off a lot of the time, which is a tease, but with almost no wave to work with, it’s just clean, flat water. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.

Now, we finally get a little pulse towards the end. Wednesday the 23rd of September afternoon sees a bump to 3 ft from the N, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 139 – that’s moderate energy. Winds are offshore from the W, so it’ll be clean. This is the best we’ve got, but it’s still just “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th keep that 2 ft to 3 ft range, from the NNE and NE, period around 9 to 10 seconds, with energy in the 106 to 184 range. The wind stays light or offshore, so the surface will be tidy. But honestly, none of these days are a standout; they’re just the least bad of a poor run.

The biggest issue here is the lack of size and consistency. For a sandbar setup like Opoutere Beach, which is fairly exposed to ENE swell, we’re just not getting the juice. The whole 16-day window has no true highlights. The best window is that Wednesday the 23rd to Friday the 25th, but even then, it’s small and ordinary. If you’re desperate, point your board that way, but keep your expectations on the floor.

Rusty.
