The Lowdown
Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a grim stretch ahead for Tairua Bar. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty darn flat and messy. We’ve got a massive gap of nothing worth paddling out for from now all the way through to the end of August. The first week is full of tiny, weak swells and poor conditions, so honestly, don’t even bother waxing up.
Right at the very end of the month, on the morning of the 30th of August, we finally see a little bump of life. There’s a small swell pushing through from the NE, bringing waves around 2ft. The wind is dead calm which will leave it clean. It’s still weak energy (99) and really just "surfable" at best, but it's the best we’ve seen in a fortnight.
That afternoon, it gets slightly more interesting. The swell holds around 2ft from the NE, and the combined energy ticks up to a moderate 132. The wind staying glassy is a major positive, meaning clean faces. It’s still nothing to write home about, but for this stretch, it's the standout.
If you’re an expert looking for a fun, small-wave session, the 30th is your window. It won't be powerful and crowds are possible here, but with the calm winds, it’ll be clean. For beginners, the tiny swell is fine, but there's just not much push. If this was a beach setup, I’d say it looks more interesting for a kite, but it's a bar, so we just ride what we get.
After that, Monday the 31st of August gets messy again with a fresh cross-shore wind and lumpy chop. Not good.
Look, this is a tough run. It doesn’t stay this flat forever, but for now, mark your calendar for the 30th. That’s your best shot.
Rusty.
