Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tairua Bar over the next 16 days.
Righto, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Tairua Bar. The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest, but there's one window that’s got my blood pumping.
The water temp is sitting around 60°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year. Not complaining there.
Wednesday, July 8th – We kick things off with a bit of a tease. The swell is a clean 4ft from the east with a solid 10-second period, and the wind is dead glassy from the south. This is it – the standout. The combined energy is a solid moderate 529, so there's a decent push behind it. For the advanced surfer who can handle a bar, this is the session to chase. The east swell is a good angle for the bar, and with glassy conditions, you’re looking at clean lines. It won't be empty, crowds are possible here, but the quality will make it worth sharing.
After that, things go a bit pear-shaped. From Thursday morning (July 9th) right through to Wednesday morning (July 15th), it’s pretty much a write-off. The wind goes onshore or howling cross-shore, chopping everything up. The swell sticks around, but the quality is poor. There's a brief moment on Sunday morning (July 12th) where it goes glassy again, but the swell drops to a tiny 2ft with weak energy (94), so it's just ankle-biters.
We get a slight tease on Thursday, July 16th with a clean 2ft swell but it has a very long 15-second period. That long period at a beach bar setup can make things close out, but the easterly direction and glassy wind could offer a sneaky, clean little wave for the patient surfer. The energy is weak though (163).
Then we get another proper look-in on Saturday, July 18th. The morning session shows 5ft of swell from the north-northeast, with a clean cross-offshore wind from the southwest. The combined energy is moderate at 318. This is another solid option, but the swell isn't as polished as that first Wednesday, and the north angle might not be as peaky for the bar. The afternoon gets chopped up again.
From Sunday, July 19th onwards, it's onshore winds and messy conditions all the way until Thursday, July 23rd. The swell is often there, sometimes even pushing 5ft, but the wind is always from the southeast or east-southeast, putting a chop on everything. Not one for the paddle board, honestly, this stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than someone on a thruster.
So, for the short-term: this Wednesday afternoon (July 8th) is the clear winner. For the long-range punt, Saturday morning (July 18th) is promising but less certain. The rest? A lot of waiting.
Rusty.
