The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and we’ve got a pretty grim stretch ahead for the Tairua Bar (Coromandel Peninsula) region. Honestly, the next week and a half is a write-off for any decent paddle surfing.
For the first five days, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to Thursday the 27th of August, the swell is barely a ripple. We’re talking 0.3ft to 0.7ft of weak, short-period energy. The combined energy is just a pathetic 23 at its best, dropping to as low as 6. No way you’re getting a wave. The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, but with nothing to push around, it’s irrelevant. It’s a total flat spell.
We finally see a pulse of energy arrive on Saturday the 29th of August. The swell picks up to 4ft in the morning from the N, with the combined energy jumping to 127 (moderate). The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and weak, but with a clean offshore wind from the W, it’ll be surfable for a few hours. It’s ordinary, but it’s the first real chance you’ll get. By the afternoon it drops back to 3ft, still with offshore wind from the WSW. This is about as good as it gets all week.
Sunday the 30th of August starts with 2ft from the NE and a moderate offshore wind, but the energy is only 72 (weak). The afternoon gets a bump to 3ft from the NE with a fresh offshore breeze, but the wind is a stiff 19 mph, making it a bit of a battle. From Monday the 31st of August through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, it’s back to tiny, weak swell and clean but unrideable conditions.
Now, here’s the one standout in the whole outlook. On Thursday the 3rd of September, in the afternoon, we get a brief moment of pure glass. The wind goes to glassy, the swell is 2ft from the NNW with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 59 (weak). The surf is “very ordinary” but it’s clean and small. If you’ve got a longboard or a foamie, that’s the session to aim for. It’s not going to be pumping, but it’ll be the most pleasant paddle of the whole run.
Friday the 4th of September is a cruel tease. The swell jumps to 5ft from the NNW with 7-second period and a combined energy of 256 (strong), but the cross-off wind is a messy 16 mph, making it look more interesting for a kite session than a surf. For an advanced crew on a beach/bar setup like Tairua, that’s just blown-out junk.
After that, from Saturday the 5th of September onward, we fade back into tiny, weak swell for the rest of the outlook. There’s nothing on the horizon worth chasing. It’s a real bummer, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Keep an eye on the glassy afternoon of the 3rd of September if you’re desperate for a paddle.
Rusty.
