Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Tairua Bar’s got for us over the next 16 days.
Right off the bat, Saturday the 4th is a no-go. Cross-onshore wind and a lumpy 5ft swell with moderate energy (648) – just not worth paddling out. The real action starts Sunday the 5th.
Sunday morning the 5th is a proper start. Clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze out of the WNW, and a 4ft east swell with a moderate 10-second period. The combined energy is solid (437). Not huge, but it’ll be clean and shapely. This one’s for the advanced crew who know the bar.
Monday the 6th morning pushes a bit more size – 6ft from the north – but it’s a short-period 7-second swell, so it’ll be a bit jumbled. Wind is offshore from the WSW though, so it’ll be clean. Combined energy is 470. Worth a look if you’re keen.
Tuesday the 7th morning is a real gem. Glassy flat calm – doesn’t get any better – with a 4ft swell from the NNE, still short period at 7 seconds. But that glassy wind? That’s the kind of session you remember. Combined energy is 290, so it’s not a beast, but the vibe will be spot on.
Wednesday the 8th is solid too. Mornin’ has a clean cross-offshore breeze from the SSW, 4ft from the NNE, period up to 9 seconds now – that’s more grunt (588 energy). Afternoon cleans up even more with a 5ft east swell, 10-second period, and light offshore wind. That’s a top afternoon session.
After that, things fade fast. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th see the swell drop below 3ft and the combined energy falls to 189 or less. Winds get messy too. From Saturday the 11th all the way to Sunday the 19th, we’re lookin’ at tiny, weak surf – most days under 2ft with combined energy barely reachin’ 100. A few glassy moments on Tuesday the 14th afternoon and Sunday the 19th afternoon, but with 1ft and 2ft respectively, it’s barely a ripple. There’s a pulse of north swell on Thursday the 16th – 5ft in the morning, 7ft in the afternoon – but it’s hammered by strong cross-onshore winds up to 25 mph, so it’s messy and blown out. That’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle day.
The real standouts are Tuesday the 7th morning for that glassy magic, and Wednesday the 8th afternoon for the bigger, cleaner swell. Sunday the 5th morning is also a clean option for the advanced crew.
Water temp is 60°F, which is right on average for this time of year – no surprises.
Keep an eye on it, but after the first week, it’s mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
