The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Tairua Bar. The first week is a real bummer, with next to nothing going on from Friday the 17th through Friday the 24th of July. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the energy is weak – combined energy values are in the double digits, like 144 dropping down to 5. There are some glassy mornings, but with no power, it’s a total flat spell.
The first real blip on the radar is Saturday the 25th of July. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the north, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 251 (moderate), and the wind is offshore from the WNW at 15 mph. It’ll be clean, but it’s a short-period windswell, so it’s a bit weak. The afternoon backs off to 3ft, still offshore. It’s rideable, but that’s about it.
Sunday the 26th of July has a bit more weight. The morning shows 6ft swell from the NNW, period 8 seconds, and a combined energy of 491 (strong). The wind is a cross-off from the NW at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean. That’s a solid pulse, but 6ft on a beach/bar with short period can get messy and dumpy. It’s getting into the top end for intermediates. The afternoon drops to 3ft with offshore wind. The morning is the only window that day.
The real standout is Friday the 31st of July. The afternoon session has 6ft swell from the NNW, period 7 seconds, and a combined energy of 310 (strong). The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SW at 9 mph, and the data says "expect good surf conditions". That’s the pick of the whole 16 days. It’s a short period, so it’ll be a bit fat and racy, but with that energy, there’ll be some fun, punchy wedges if the bank is halfway decent. The morning of the 31st is also worth a look with 4ft and offshore wind, but the afternoon is the one.
Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
Since the decent swell is mostly short-period and under 5ft, it’s not a beginner spot on the bigger days, but it’s not expert-only. Crowds can pop up sometimes at Tairua Bar, so keep your wits about you.
So, bottom line: the first week is a dud. The best bet is the afternoon of Friday the 31st of July. That’s your window.
