The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's look at this stretch of water. Honestly, the outlook for the next two weeks is pretty weak. We've got a long stretch ahead with barely anything worth paddling out for.
For the first week, from July 18th through to July 23rd, it's mostly a washout. Waves are tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, and with poor conditions. Saturday the 18th morning has a little something at Tairua Bar – a clean 1ft from the ESE, but with weak energy (73) and a very ordinary feel. After that, it's a grind of poor surf and very ordinary conditions all the way. We're looking at a solid 5 to 6 day gap where you wouldn't bother.
Things might start to look slightly more interesting around July 24th. Friday morning at Tairua Bar we get a little bump to 3ft from the E, with moderate wave energy (154) and light offshore winds. That means it'll be clean, but still small. The better option later that day is a glassy session on Thursday afternoon (July 23rd) with a 2ft ENE swell and 73 energy. Clean conditions but again, small.
The real standout, if you can call it that, shows up on July 30th and August 1st. We've got a long-period groundswell pushing in from the ENE. The period jumps to 20-21 seconds, which is proper groundswell. That kind of long-period swell tends to hold up best at a bar or river mouth like Tairua Bar, rather than a beach break where it can straighten out. On July 30th we see 0.7ft to 1ft, but the energy is moderate (71) and the period is so long it'll carry some push. By August 1st, the swell is still 1ft from the ENE at 15-16 seconds, and the energy is climbing to 161. Offshore winds are light to gentle. This is the best on offer, but it's still small and 8-9 days out, so take it with a grain of salt.
To be honest, this is a tough stretch. Tairua Bar is a fairly consistent spot, but it's an advanced wave and the conditions just aren't lining up. For most of the week, it's not worth the drive. If you're a kiter, the combination of swell and strong cross-offshore winds from the SW on July 25th could look better than a paddle session, but that's not much of a silver lining.
This is a long lean spell. Just check back in a few days; things can change. This is Rusty signing off.
