Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tairua Bar over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty checking in with a long-range look at our local stretch. We've got a bit of a flat spell to start, but there's some serious potential brewing out there for the patient surfer.
The finder is pointing us straight to Tairua Bar for the whole run. Right now, through the first week, it's looking pretty ordinary. We've got a run of small, weak waves and mostly onshore or light cross-off winds, so don't expect much at all. Monday the 13th is glassy but with waves only 1.3ft, it's a flat, glassy lake more than anything. There's a slight bump on Tuesday the 14th afternoon with a 3.3ft windswell from the north, but it's short period and just ordinary. This lull hangs around for several days, so if you're itching for a paddle, you might be out of luck.
The real story starts to build from the weekend of the 19th. A new swell arrives Sunday the 19th with a clean 7.2ft from the ESE, with a light cross-off wind. The combined energy is a strong 702, so there's some serious push. This is solid, expert-level surf. By Monday the 20th the swell is still up around 7.2ft from the E, and things get a bit more challenging with moderate cross-off winds and a score that hints at tricky conditions.
Now for the standout window. Keep your eye on Wednesday the 22nd. The swell jumps to 8.2ft from the East, but the magic is the wind. We've got a clean 15 km/h offshore breeze from the West, meaning the waves will be groomed and clean. That's a classic Tairua Bar setup. The combined energy is a massive 2009, so this is powerful, well-shaped groundswell. This is the pick of the entire outlook for experienced surfers. Thursday the 23rd is even bigger with a 9.8ft+ East swell, but at that size with a bit of side-offshore wind, it's strictly for the well-equipped crew. The energy reading hits 5652 – that's a beast.
The good swell energy hangs around right through the end of the forecast into the 26th, with consistent 7.5ft to 8.2ft ENE swells and clean winds. The second week is looking much more active than the first, but keep in mind that far out, it's promising but not set in stone.
The water is just a touch warmer than average for the season. Nothing crazy, but a nice 0.3° anomaly means you won't need a full winter suit just yet.
Stay stoked, but be patient. The big stuff is on the way.
