Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tairua Bar over the next 16 days.
Hey crew, Rusty here with the lowdown on Tairua Bar.
It’s gonna be a slow start, no lie. From Sunday the 12th through to Thursday the 17th of July, we got next to nothing – tiny 0.2ft to 0.6ft waves with weak energy, and the wind’s all over the shop. Not worth wetting your wetsuit.
Things get a little pulse on Friday the 17th morning. A 16-second groundswell from the ESE rolls in at 0.4ft to 0.5ft, but the combined energy climbs to 121, so there’s some grunt. Offshore wind in the morning keeps it clean. Still small, but it’s a sign of life. Good for a longboard or a sneaky dawn patrol if you’re keen on the sandbanks.
Then we get a bit more on Saturday the 18th – 0.4ft to 0.5ft, 14-second period, offshore and cross-off winds, energy of 107. The comment says “surfable but ordinary,” but it’s the best you’ll see in the first week.
Now, hold onto your board. Wednesday the 22nd of July is the big one. A huge ENE groundswell hits with a face of 5ft in the morning, 11-second period, and combined energy of 11907 – that’s a serious ocean. Wind is cross-shore in the morning, cleaning up to cross-off in the afternoon. This is expert territory only – 5ft is heavy, especially on a beach/bar setup. The period is long enough that it’ll break fast and deep.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th keep the leftovers at 3ft to 3ft with cross-off winds, but the tide and conditions get tricky (energy around 2600-3600). Still powerful, but pick your window carefully.
Water temp on the 12th is about 60°F, which is average for winter. The bar can get a crowd here and there, so go early or late to dodge the pack.
After the big stuff, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th settle into absolute gold – 2ft to 2ft, clean east swell with 11 to 12-second period, and light offshore or glassy winds. Combined energy in the 700-855 range – that’s solid, fun, punchy waves. This is the weekend for the whole crew, from intermediates up.
Then Monday the 27th morning is another cracker for experienced surfers – 2ft, 13-second east swell, light offshore wind, and energy of 1579. The afternoon gets some rain and a cross-on wind, so get it early.
To sum it up: first week is a bust. Mid-week gets a massive, expert-only blast, then we get a beautiful, clean, fun-sized weekend. That weekend is your best bet.
Rusty out.
