The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Tairua Bar.
To be honest, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. The first real chance of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Monday, August 3rd. That’s over a week of flat, small, or messy conditions before we get a sniff of something rideable. You’ll be waiting a while.
The only spot that’s on the cards is Tairua Bar. It’s a beach/bar setup, mainly for advanced crew, and it’s fairly consistent when there’s swell. The optimum direction is from the NE, and it’s fairly exposed.
For the first week and a half, it’s grim. From Sunday, July 19th right through to Sunday, August 2nd, the swell stays tiny, mostly below 1 ft, with periods all over the shop. The combined energy is weak, usually under 100. There’s a few glassy windows on the 21st afternoon and the 23rd morning, but with nothing to push through, it’s just flat and clean – pretty to look at, useless for a paddle. Winds are often cross-off or light, so the water looks nice, but there’s no grunt. On July 31st, the wind picks up strong from the NNE, hitting 22 mph, and the combined energy climbs to 105, but it’s cross-on and lumpy with only 1 ft of swell – a mess, not worth suiting up for.
Then, on Monday, August 3rd, things finally change. The morning brings a clean, light offshore breeze from the SW, with a 1 ft swell from the NE. The period is a solid 14 seconds, so there’s some long-period groundswell energy in there. The combined energy reads 132 – moderate, with a bit of push. Now, this is a long-period swell, which at a beach/bar can sometimes break a bit too straight, but Tairua Bar can handle it. The wind is off, the surf is clean, and while it’s not big, it’s the only real chance in the whole outlook. This is the standout. It’s small but clean, and for advanced surfers who know the bank, it’ll be worth a session. Crowds are possible here, especially when it’s the only game in town, so keep that in mind.
That’s the lot. A long, quiet spell, then one morning that looks like it could be a little gem. Forecasts can change, and it’s a long way out, so I’d keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
