The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at the Tairua Bar stretch for the next couple of weeks. It's a pretty grim start, I gotta be honest – we're looking at a long dry spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The wave energy is basically non-existent for over a week.
For the first week, from Monday the 20th of July right through to the end of that week, it’s a write-off. Swell heights are barely a whisper, mostly under 2 ft, and the combined energy is stuck in the weak zone (under 100). The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there. You'll see some glassy mornings, like Tuesday the 21st afternoon and Thursday the 23rd morning, but with no swell to push through, it's a lake. The set-up is just not happening for a paddle surfer.
We get a tiny hint of life on Saturday the 25th morning. The swell bumps up to a tiny 3 ft from the east, and it's clean with a moderate offshore from the WSW. The combined energy hits 217 (moderate), but the period is a short 11 seconds, and the conditions are still described as 'poor'. It's barely surfable for a foiler or a longboard on a good day.
Now, we finally see some proper promise in the second week. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th stay small and clean, but things start to get interesting on Thursday the 30th of July. Thursday afternoon a solid 7 ft pulse from the north shows up. The wave energy jumps to 592 (strong). It's clean with a light cross-off breeze. That's the best on offer, folks. It's a proper groundswell, and the direction is from the north, which lines up nicely with what Tairua Bar likes. It's a solid expert-level wave for that afternoon.
Friday the 31st holds a bit of size – 6 ft to 6 ft from the NNW – but the wind swings more onshore and the conditions get a bit messier. Then into the weekend, Saturday the 1st of August morning looks nice with a clean 5 ft from the NNW and a light offshore. The wave energy is still strong at 342. That Saturday morning is the second standout: not quite the peak of Thursday, but much cleaner and more manageable for a strong intermediate if they're feeling brave. After that, the swell fades quickly through Sunday and into Monday. The last few days are back to flatness with only tiny 0.7 ft leftovers.
So, for the whole window, the single standout is that Thursday afternoon (30th July) – big, strong, and clean. Saturday morning (1st August) is the best fallback. Everything else is a skip.
Rusty out.
