The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Alright, let’s be real – the next two weeks are going to be a grind for surf. We’ve got a big flat spell at the start, and it’s going to take a while before anything rideable shows up.
From Monday the 24th through the end of August, it’s dead. We’re looking at ankle-biters of 0.3ft to 1ft, with weak, short-period energy. The wave energy readings are pathetic – single digits to maybe 29 (weak). Even with the offshore winds we get at times, there’s just no swell to work with. It’s clean, but flat. Don’t bother.
Come September 1st and 2nd, we finally see a pulse – swell bumps up to around 2ft to 2ft, and the energy climbs into the 70s (moderate). It’s still pretty ordinary, but at least it’s surfable. The morning of the 2nd has a light offshore breeze, so it’ll be clean, but don’t expect any power. Then we hit another rough patch from the 3rd through the 7th, with onshore winds and the swell fading right back out. Choppy, small, and messy.
The one glimmer of hope is the morning of Sunday the 8th of September. The swell is still small, around 0.7ft, but the period jumps to a proper 11 seconds, which means some real groundswell energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, so Tairua Bar (Tairua-Bar) should be clean. The energy is still weak at 12, so it’s not going to be pumping, but it’s the clear pick of the period. That long period might make it a bit tricky on the bar, but if the sand is right, you could snag a few.
No real standout here. If you’re keen, that Sunday morning is your only real option, but keep expectations in check. Water temp is about normal for this time of year. It’s a lean stretch, but this break is fairly consistent, so it won’t stay flat forever.
