The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I'm looking at the next 16 days for Tairua Bar (New Zealand). Honestly, it's a slow start. We've got a long stretch of nothing much happening until the final days of August. The first proper surfable waves don't show up until Saturday the 29th, and even then, it's a case of "beggars can't be choosers."
From now until then, we're looking at a real flat spell. There's a window of tiny, knee-high slop from Friday the 21st through to the end of the week, but with wave energy barely registering, it's a total write-off. The 28th of August sees a pulse of swell jump up to 5 ft, but it's a messy, short-period windswell from the north with a nasty 19 mph onshore breeze, making it pure chaos. That's really more of a kitesurfing setup than a paddle session.
The real light at the end of the tunnel is Friday the 4th of September. That morning is shaping up to be the standout. We're looking at a solid 8 ft swell from the north, with a moderate 990 combined energy, and clean conditions thanks to a light offshore breeze. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit sectiony, but for an advanced break like Tairua Bar, that's the day to circle. The winds stay offshore into the afternoon, though the swell drops a touch. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The rest of the run is a mix of average and poor. The week leading up to the 4th has some surfable but ordinary waves, with a few glassy mornings on the 31st offering up 3 ft of NE swell, but the wind tends to turn onshore. Bottom line: hold out for that Friday the 4th. It's the only real standout in the whole outlook.
