The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for us here at Onemana, to be honest. We’ve got a serious flat spell on the cards before things finally start to wake up. Don’t get too excited just yet though, because the first real pulse of swell looks like it’ll be messy and blown out. There are a couple of days that could offer a salvageable wave, but we’re not talking about anything epic.
The water temp is sitting at a normal 59° right now, which is pretty standard for this time of year. Bring the booties and maybe a hood.
The good news? The first proper surf on offer shows up on Thursday the 3rd of September, and it’s the standout of the whole window. Before that, we’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak surf. From the 19th onward, it’s mostly below 2ft with weak energy readings, way down in the single digits. There’s a little bump on the 20th with some 2ft easterly swell, but the winds are a bit cross-off and it’s just ordinary.
The gap between any real surf is long. We’re talking about a run of flat, poor days from the 19th through to the 28th. The swell does start to build around the 29th and 30th, but it’s still small and the winds are messy. Then the 31st of August sees a proper jump in size—up to 3ft, then 6ft by the afternoon—but the wind goes onshore from the southeast and it gets choppy. Not what we want.
The real kicker comes on the 1st and 2nd of September. Swell heights get up to 6ft and 5ft, with the energy reading into the 700s and 500s, so there’s definitely power behind it. But the wind is cross-shore and strong, 25-30 km/h, making it lumpy and messy. The 2nd of September stays in that 4-4ft range with moderate energy (430-534), but again, the cross-shore wind chops it up.
Now, your one to watch: Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. The swell drops slightly to 5ft from the ENE with a short 7-second period, but the wind is a clean cross-off from the SSW at 15 km/h. That’s the first time we get clean, surfable conditions with real size. The energy is at 353 (moderate). This is the best bit of the whole forecast, and it’s the only day I’d seriously point you to. It’s not the biggest, but with those clean conditions, Onemana will actually hold some shape. Keep in mind the short period means the sets will be a little crumbly, but it’s the only clean window we get.
Before that, on the 29th and 30th, there are some surfable-looking numbers (2ft with 48 energy, and 2ft with 123 energy on the 30th), but the winds are cross or cross-on, and it’s not going to be worth the paddle. And for the beginners out there, that 6ft on the 31st is getting up there, and the 6ft on the 1st is pushing it too, but with the wind, it’ll be a washing machine. The 3rd of September at 5ft is manageable for the intermediates if the conditions hold.
So, mark your calendars for that Thursday the 3rd. It’s not a world-class day, but after two weeks of flatness, it’ll feel like a gift. Get amongst it early.
