The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s talk about the surf outlook for Onemana.
Right now, the wave window is looking pretty grim for a solid stretch. We’ve got a long gap of weak, messy, or just plain flat conditions from Tuesday July 14th all the way through to Sunday July 26th. That’s nearly two weeks of nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days offer tiny scraps—0.7ft to 3ft—with mostly cross-off or offshore winds, but the swell is too small and jumbled to get excited about. The combined swell energy is low, often under 100 (69, 33, 34), meaning there’s just no power in the water. The water temperature sits at 59° with a very slight anomaly of -0.1°, so pretty average for this time of year.
Around Friday July 17th, there’s a little bump of 2ft east swell with a 16-second period—that’s proper long-period groundswell—and the combined energy jumps to 137 (moderate). But it’s still only surfable, not great, with cross-off winds. The following days stay small and weak, with mostly onshore or cross-on winds messing things up.
Then from Monday July 21st, the swell starts to build, but it comes with strong onshore winds (ESE to E, 20–25 mph), making it a complete mess. By Wednesday July 23rd, the swell hits 13ft to 15ft with a 12-second period, and combined energy skyrockets to 4649–6034 (very strong). This is huge, but it’s being blown to pieces by fresh onshore winds. That’s expert-only territory, and honestly, it looks more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle-surfing day. The heavy swell continues through to July 26th, but the wind stays onshore or cross-on, keeping conditions poor.
The standout window finally arrives on Monday July 27th and Tuesday July 28th. On Monday morning, we get 5ft of east-northeast swell with a 11-second period, combined energy of 551 (moderate), and light cross-off winds from the WSW. That’s clean, surfable, and the swell is long-period enough to give you good shape. On Tuesday July 28th, conditions improve even more: 4ft east-northeast swell, 10-second period, with glassy conditions and light west winds in the morning. The combined energy hits 658 (moderate), and the water is clean. The swell direction is east-northeast, which matches the optimum direction for Onemana (NE). This is the best on offer—clean, consistent, and just the right size for intermediate surfers. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
After that, Wednesday July 29th drops back to 3ft and 2ft with cross-off winds, still surfable but nothing special.
So, to wrap it up: don’t bother with the first two weeks—it’s either flat or blown out. The real action is Monday July 27th and Tuesday July 28th, with Tuesday morning being the pick. Clean, glassy, and a solid 4ft of NE swell. That’s your window.
Rusty.
