The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We've got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves, and the only real pulse of size comes with a whole heap of problems. Don't get your hopes up just yet.
We're starting off with a real flat spell. From Saturday the 22nd right through to Friday the 28th, it's just ankle-biters. The swell is hovering around 0.3ft to 1.0ft, mostly from the NE, and the period is all over the place, from a short, weak 6 seconds up to 14 seconds. The combined energy is pathetic, barely cracking 20 (13 on Saturday arvo). It's clean enough, with light westerly winds, but there's just nothing to ride. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year. You'd be better off finding a new hobby for the week.
The first real sign of life comes on Saturday, the 29th of August. The swell jumps to 6ft from the N in the morning, climbing to 6ft from the NNW in the afternoon. The period is a short, crumbly 6-7 seconds, so it's gonna be a lumpy, close-out mess. The combined energy is pumping through the roof, hitting 279 in the morning and a massive 533 in the arvo, but the wind is howling out of the N and NW at 12-16 mph, putting a nasty cross-chop on it. The rating is a total zero, and it's described as "poor surf conditions." This is a big, ugly, onshore mess at Onemana. It's for experts only, and even then, it's a kite-surfing day, not a paddle day.
After that big pulse, we get a bit of a lull. Sunday the 30th sees the swell drop back to 2ft to 3ft from the NE. The wind swings offshore from the W, which is a positive, and the combined energy sits at a moderate 84 to 112. It's surfable, but ordinary. That trickles into the start of September, with similar 2ft to 3ft swells and offshore winds, but the quality is still just "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." The best bet in this whole sorry outlook is probably Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning shows 3ft NE swell with a 10-second period, offshore W winds at 9 mph, and a combined energy of 115. It's clean, but it's just not a standout.
The end of the period is a write-off. From Thursday the 3rd of September onwards, we get onshore winds from the NE and E, with rain and even a stormy day on the 4th with 22 mph winds. The swell gets chopped up, and the wave comment is consistently "poor surf conditions." The last few days of the forecast are a total flat spell again, with 1ft swells and light cross-onshore breezes.
So, to sum it up: there's a whole lot of nothing, then a day of dangerous, messy size, then a week of mediocrity. There's no standout session here. The only window to even consider is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September, with a clean, waist-high wave on offer. Keep your expectations low, and maybe the forecast will change.
Rusty.
