Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ocean Beach Pier over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up for Ocean Beach Pier over the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water is sitting at 70°F and that’s a solid 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so you’re getting a nice warm bath compared to the norm. Nice.
Now, the honest truth is the next week and a half is pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions. From Wednesday 8th July right through to the morning of Saturday 18th July, there’s nothing worth getting excited about. The swell is small, mostly around 2ft to 3ft, and the wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, and onshore – leaving things choppy and messy. The combined wave energy is mostly weak, sitting in the 200 to 600 range, and a few days it barely cracks 400. It’s the kind of period where you’re better off doing something else.
The first real standout pops up on Sunday 19th July. The morning brings a bump in swell to 6ft from the SSW, with a period of 16 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell, meaning it’ll have some punch and shape. The wind is light and onshore from the W, so it won’t be glassy, but it’s manageable. The combined energy jumps to 1615, which is moderate to strong energy, so there’s some power behind it. This isn’t for beginners as it’s over 5ft, but intermediates will find something to work with if the tide lines up. The afternoon holds similar size at 6ft, with slightly shorter period (14 seconds) and energy dropping to 1390, still decent.
After that, Monday 20th July drops back to 3ft, and the rest of the window looks marginal again. However, Thursday 23rd July afternoon shows another pulse of 6ft from the SSW with a 15-second period and energy at 1298. Winds are light and cross-on, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the second-best looking window in the whole forecast.
Overall, the best bet is Sunday 19th July. It’s the biggest, most energetic day, and while the wind isn’t ideal, it’s light enough to get some clean lines. Keep an eye on the tides, and don’t expect a classic, but it’s the only day that’s really worth a paddle.
Rusty.
