The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let's break down Ocean Beach Pier. It's a beach and reef break that's consistent and exposed to the west. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing too special.
Right off the bat, Tuesday the 18th through Thursday the 20th, we're looking at poor conditions. Tiny little 2-foot swells from the southwest, with a long 14 to 16-second period. That long-period groundswell is promising for shape, but there's just not enough height to do anything with it. The combined energy is weak to moderate (345-297), and the wind is light onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things messy. Not worth paddling out.
The next few days, from Friday the 21st to Sunday the 23rd of August, don't get much better. The swell drops even further on Saturday morning to just 1ft (216 combined energy), although the period hits 18 seconds – a very long groundswell, which is a tease. Sunday brings a little more size but with a short 13-second period and poor conditions. We're in a real funk.
There's a noticeable gap of a few days where the surf is just plain poor or marginal with nothing to recommend. The best we see on the whole 16-day window is on Saturday, the 29th of August, and Sunday, the 30th. We finally get some decent energy in the water with combined energy readings up to 664 and 688 units, which is moderate-to-strong. The swell picks up to 3ft from the southwest, with a solid 15 to 17-second period. The wind is light and onshore or cross-onshore, which is a bummer, but the energy is there for the first time.
For a standout, Ocean Beach Pier is the only spot, and even the best day on the 29th is only marginal. With that longer 17-second period, the sets will be clean and the shape could be okay for an intermediate, but the cross-onshore wind is a buzzkill. The start of September falls right back into the pattern of poor conditions.
It’s a quiet couple of weeks. Maybe the last weekend of August offers a small window.
Rusty.
