The Lowdown

Alright, grab your board and let’s talk about what’s ahead for Ocean Beach Pier. To be honest, it’s looking pretty bleak for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell with nowhere near enough energy to get the blood pumping. You’re gonna want to keep your expectations low.

Right now, into Monday and Tuesday, there’s a bit of ankle to knee-high slop but the wind is all wrong – coming onshore and cross-onshore, leaving things choppy and messy. The energy is super weak, measuring around 337 on Monday morning and dropping. It’s a total closeout zone with nothing worth getting wet for.

The whole first week is a write-off. We’re looking at a solid stretch of nothing from now through the following weekend. The swell stays small, between 1ft and 3ft, with periods mostly in the 13 to 17 second range, but that doesn't help when there's just no height. The wind keeps flipping between onshore and cross-onshore, and the energy readings stay low, mostly in the 200s and 300s. Paddling out for that is just a waste of energy.

We finally see a bit of a pulse late in the month, but we’re talking two weeks out, so take it with a grain of salt. The morning of the 29th shows a little bump in energy, reading 541, with the swell picking up slightly to 3ft. There’s still a cross-onshore breeze, but it’s light. It’s promising, but not a guarantee.

Then, the 30th is potentially the one glimmer of hope. We’ve got a morning with light cross-shore winds and a touch more size, coming in around 3ft. The energy is building to 518, and it feels like the ocean is finally starting to wake up. The wind is light, which should keep things a bit cleaner. The afternoon looks even more interesting with the swell up to 3ft and energy pushing 543. It’s still marginal, but this is the most rideable we’ve seen all window. Be prepared for it to be inconsistent.

To be straight with you, there are better places to spend your time. This is a beach and reef setup, and with such weak swell, the focus is on quality over quantity, and right now, quality is missing. For anyone just starting out, there’s nothing here. It’s flat and messy. Keep your eyes on that last weekend of August and into September for the only real potential we’ve got.

That’s the long and short of it. The ocean has been quiet, but it feels like it’s starting to stir.

Rusty.
