Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a honest look at what Ocean Beach Pier has lined up for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s looking like a pretty flat and frustrating stretch. There’s nothing in the first few days that would get anyone excited, and we’ve got a long gap until anything even slightly rideable shows up. We are looking at a solid run of small, weak swell and tricky winds that’ll keep most of us on the sand. The water temperature is sitting at about 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze waiting for a wave.
The first real glimmer of something surfable doesn’t come until Tuesday morning, July 7th. Ocean Beach Pier will see a small SW groundswell at 4 ft, 18 seconds—that’s a long period swell packing some punch, but the energy is still modest (combined energy of 782). The wind looks okay, straight onshore from the W at 9 mph, which means it’ll be a bit bumpy but not completely blown out. It’s a marginal call, not a standout.
After that, Wednesday July 8th morning offers a similar story: 3 ft SW swell at 16 seconds, combined energy of 879, and light cross-onshore breeze from the SW at 6 mph. The wave quality is still only marginal. This is about as good as it gets for this forecast—but let’s not pretend it’s pumping.
Thursday July 9th morning is the next slight uptick: 3 ft SW, 16 seconds, combined energy of 624, with a cross-shore breeze from the SSW at 9 mph. It’s clean enough for a longboard or a funboard, but nothing special.
After a few more days of small, messy surf, the next brief window appears on Sunday July 12th afternoon: 3 ft SSW groundswell, 14 seconds, combined energy of 391, with light cross-onshore wind from the WNW at 6 mph. Again, marginal.
There’s a weird spike on Thursday July 16th morning with a 4 ft W swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds—that’s windswell, not groundswell, and the combined energy is 444. The wind is cross-onshore from the SSW at 9 mph, making for messy, weak waves. Not worth the drive.
For the rest of the run into July 20th, it’s all below 3 ft with poor surf conditions. No standouts, no days to circle on the calendar. If you are a kitesurfer, that moderate cross-shore wind on Friday July 10th and Saturday July 11th might look more interesting than anything a paddle surfer would want, but for a regular surfer, this is a long, quiet period.
So, to sum it up: there’s no real highlight here. The best you’ll get is a few small, marginal windows around Tuesday July 7th and Wednesday July 8th, with light winds making the most of a weak SW groundswell. It’s not terrible, but it’s not worth calling in sick for. Hang tight, and remember this stretch is normal for the area—it won’t stay poor forever.
Stay patient,
Rusty
