The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real. There’s nothing on the cards for Northcott for the next 16 days. It’s a total bust. Every single session is flagged as poor surf conditions, so I’m not going to try and polish a turd here.
You’re looking at July 13th, and the first read is a pathetic 0.3ft West swell. The wind is blowing 30 km/h cross-off from the ENE, and the water is a warm 66°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. But that doesn’t matter when the combined energy is a weak 12, and the waves are just not there.
The whole pattern is a flat, weak mess. From July 14th through the 23rd, you’re mostly looking at 1ft to 2ft swells from the West or North, with periods that are all over the shop – some short 3-second junk, and some longer 19-second lines that would just close out on a beach break. The wind is shifting around constantly, and even when it goes dead calm on the morning of July 18th, the swell is still a measly 2ft. There’s no power, no shape, and no reason to paddle out.
Things try to pick up around July 24th and 25th, with the swell hitting 3ft and the combined energy getting into the moderate range (105 to 140). But the wind is a nightmare – strong onshore and cross-onshore from the WSW, making it lumpy, choppy, and a total mess. The swell period is a short 4 to 7 seconds, so it’s just wind-blown slop. By July 26th, you’ve got a strong breeze and rain, which is just brutal.
Northcott is a fairly exposed spot, but it needs the right angle and a bit of luck. This forecast has none of that. It’s a dead run, and for this area, that’s just how it goes sometimes. Hang your wetsuit up, and check back another day. Forecasts can always change.
