The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming for Northcott over the next couple of weeks.

To be honest, this stretch is a real mixed bag. The water temp here is running at 66°, which is 5° warmer than what you’d normally expect for this time of year – feels like we’ve got a bit of a marine heatwave on. But the swell and wind just aren’t playing ball for the most part. There’s a big gap of nothing worthwhile at the start, and pretty much the whole run is a tough watch for anyone wanting a proper paddle out. The north-west groundswell that shows up on Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st has some energy – we’re talking moderate wave energy (297 on Saturday morning) – but the wind is all over it: cross, cross-on, and with a risk of thunderstorms thrown in. That 5ft west-southwest swell with a 9 second period from Saturday afternoon is your best bet of the first week, but with fresh cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. Honestly, that looks more like a kite session than surf.

The next little pulse comes in around Monday the 2nd of September, with a 5ft WSW swell, period around 6 seconds, but again it’s cross-on with a fresh breeze. By Thursday the 5th, we finally get a break in the weather – Saturday the 7th morning sees a tiny 2ft west swell with a 9 second period and a gentle offshore ENE breeze. That’s the cleanest window in the whole outlook. The wave energy is weak (58), so it’ll be small, but it’s the only time you’ll get a smooth face. The next day, Sunday the 8th afternoon, there’s a 2ft north-northeast swell with a 6 second period and light cross-off wind – still clean, still small.

Looking further out, by Thursday the 12th we get a morning of glassy conditions – 2ft north-northwest swell, period a very short 5 seconds. The energy is minimal (23), but it’s glassy. That’s your best chance for a clean, tiny log session.

But for proper, pushy surf that’s clean? There isn’t one standout in this whole 16-day window. The biggest swell we see is 7ft on Monday the 2nd, but that’s with a 10 second period and cross-on wind – a messy, drifty wave that’s only for the experienced. The water’s warm, but the conditions are just not on our side.

Honestly, lads, it’s a hibernation period for Northcott. You’re better off waiting for a change in the forecast.

Rusty.
