The Lowdown

Alright, let's have a look at what's coming in for Northcott.

Honestly, mate, the news isn't great. This 16-day window is a real struggle. We've got a solid block of poor surf conditions right through, with hardly a moment that's worth paddling out for. The first real action doesn't even show up until the very end, and even then it's iffy.

We start off with a bit of small clean swell on the morning of Sunday the 6th, with 2ft to 3ft from the West, but the combined energy is weak at 84 and the cross-off wind from the SSE at 25 km/h chops it up. It's more of a faff than fun. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's a notable warm patch.

From there, it's a long, grim stretch. We've got a pulse of swell on the 7th, hitting 6ft from the West with a 13-second period and a big combined energy of 1237, but it's blown out by onshore winds. That pattern holds for days: moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds, lumpy, choppy – absolute rubbish for a paddle. The break sees a bit more size on the 12th with 6ft, but again, cross-onshore winds ruin it.

The real letdown is the consistency of the poor conditions. There's a good 10-day gap in any proper recommendation. The energy readings are mostly in the 100–500 range, so moderate at best, but the wind is just never on your side. For the most part, this is looking more interesting for kite surfers than anyone on a paddleboard, especially with the strong breezes mid-month.

Then, finally, we get a tease on Monday the 21st afternoon. The swell jumps to a solid 10ft from the West, with a period of 9 seconds and a combined energy of 1259. That's some serious power. But – and it's a big but – the wind is a moderate cross-onshore at 25 km/h from the WSW, leaving it choppy. It's too big for beginners, and the onshore wind will make it a messy, expert-only affair at Northcott. If you're an experienced local, you might find a few lumpy ones, but don't expect any glory.

No standouts here, I'm afraid. The water's warm but the surf is a write-off. Forecasts can change, but this one looks stubborn.

Rusty.
