The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s take a look at what’s on offer. To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat. There’s a big gap right from the start, so don’t bother waxing up just yet.

The first day we’ve got any hope at all is Wednesday, July 29th, and even then it’s a sad little affair. Northcott is seeing weak, short-period swell from the west, only 2ft with a period of 8 seconds and combined energy of just 50. The wind’s onshore and the conditions are poor. It’s not going to be any fun. That poor run continues for days. The wind stays cross-on or onshore, and the swell stays tiny, under 3ft, with periods mostly under 8 seconds. The combined energy never gets past 62 (weak), so the ocean is flat and messy. This is a tough stretch.

There is a brief glimmer on the morning of Sunday, August 2nd. The wind goes light offshore from the east, at just 6 mph, cleaning things up a bit for Northcott. But the swell is still only 1ft from the west, so it’s a glassy but tiny wave. Not a standout by any stretch.

Further into the week, there’s another clean window on Monday, August 3rd morning with a slight offshore breeze from the east, but again, the wave height is barely 1ft. We see a few more clean mornings with light cross-offshore winds, like Wednesday, August 5th morning and Thursday, August 6th morning, but the swell is still just 1ft to 2ft. The combined energy hovers between 16-20, so it’s not doing anything.

The only real uptick I can see is right at the tail end. On Tuesday, August 11th, the morning at Northcott looks like the best of the whole outlook. The wind goes glassy – dead calm, with a slight air. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the west-northwest. The combined energy hits 44, still weak, but with glassy conditions it might offer a fun little wave if you’re desperate. The afternoon sees the energy rise to 86 and the swell stays 3ft, but the wind swings cross-onshore and chops it up. That Tuesday morning is your one chance. The water temp is about average for the time of year.

Overall, this is a bleak run. There’s a solid 10-day stretch of nothing worth paddling for. If you absolutely have to get wet, aim for the morning of August 11th. The groundswell period is short though (5 seconds), so don’t expect much push. For the rest of it, the breaks are barely showing any pulse. It’s a frustrating pattern, but that’s the way it is.

Rusty.
