The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Northcott over the next 16 days is a tough one. We're looking at a long dry spell with no real surf to get excited about. The first recommendation doesn't pop up until the 25th of July, which is a Saturday, and even then, it's not a pretty picture.
For the first week, from the 17th right through to the 24th, it's flat. The swell is tiny, mostly knee-high or less, with periods under 8 seconds. The wind is a mess of cross and cross-onshore, and the wave energy is pitiful – we're seeing values like 9, 11, and 28, which is just weak. Don't even bother.
We finally see a pulse of energy arrive on the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. The swell bumps up to 5 ft from the WNW with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 195 (moderate), so there's some push, but the wind is cross-onshore from the NNW at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy. This is not a surfer's wave; with that size and that wind, it looks more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers. The same story continues through the afternoon of the 25th and into the morning of the 26th, with chest-high swell but the wind stays cross-onshore, keeping it rough.
After that, the swell drops again. The 27th and 28th see some cleaner conditions – the 28th morning has a light offshore from the NNE – but the swell is only 2 ft. It's clean but weak. The rest of the month and into the 1st of August is more of the same: small, weak, and mostly onshore. There's a brief moment on the 29th afternoon where the period hits 11 seconds, but the swell is only 2 ft, so it's not doing anything.
The bottom line: this is a blank run. There's no standout, no magic window. The water temp is about average for the time of year, but that's the only thing going for us. Keep the board in the car and the wax in the cupboard.
Rusty.
