The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Newdicks Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty grim outlook for Newdicks Beach. The whole 16-day window is locked into tiny, weak swell with barely enough energy to push a foamie. The best you’ll see is a small pulse on Friday, July 24th, but even then it’s only 3ft from the NE with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy of that pulse is a modest 128, which is just barely enough to get a ride. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this is a real flat spell.
The water temperature is sitting at 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit if you’re even thinking about paddling out. The wind that Friday morning is glassy, which is a rare treat, but with such small, weak swell, it’s more of a paddle-and-chat session than a surf.
The rest of the forecast is a long run of nothing. From Saturday, July 18th right through to Thursday, July 30th, it’s mostly 0.3ft to 2ft junk with short periods and cross-off or onshore breezes. The combined energy barely cracks double digits. There’s a slight uptick on the 31st and into August 1st, with longer-period swell (16-18 seconds) but the heights are still only 1ft to 1ft, so that long period energy is wasted on these tiny waves. The wind is tidy enough – light offshore or cross-off – but there’s just no size to work with.
The only session that even scrapes a “surfable” label is the Friday morning of the 24th – 3ft, glassy, and that 128 combined energy. That’s your best shot, and it’s still a long shot. If you’re a beginner, anything over 5ft is too much, but here nothing gets close, so it’s not a safety issue, it’s just a flat issue.
This is a big gap of about 6 days with no real surf to speak of, and then the rest is just tiny dribble. It’s one of those stretches where the forecast can change, but right now, you’d be better off checking the tides for a good long walk.
