The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – this stretch of water is doing its best impression of a bathtub for the next few weeks. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first real chance to even think about a wave doesn’t show up until Wednesday, September 2nd, and even then it’s a pretty ordinary affair. That’s a solid gap of over a week with nothing to get excited about.

Let’s start with the only spot on the radar: Newdicks Beach. It’s a beach and reef setup, so it can handle a bit of variety, but it’s inconsistent and tends to be a challenge to find something rideable. For the first week, from Monday, August 24th, right through to Tuesday, September 1st, it’s all “poor surf conditions” – tiny dribbles of swell, mostly around 0.3 ft to 2 ft, with weak combined wave energy in the single digits (20 or less). The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, but when the swell is that small, even clean conditions just mean a flat, glassy lake. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.

The first real pulse comes on Wednesday, September 2nd, in the morning. Swell nudges up to 2 ft from the NE with a period of 10 seconds, and combined energy hits 76 (moderate). The wind is a gentle cross-off from the W, keeping it clean. The wave comment is “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a 1 out of 10, so not a standout, but if you’re desperate, it’s the best we’ve seen in a week. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but nothing packed.

Then, Thursday, September 3rd, is the closest thing we get to a highlight. The morning shows a 4 ft swell from the NW with a short period of 5 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 97 (still moderate). The afternoon improves to 4 ft from the NW with a 6-second period and energy of 131 (moderate). The wind is cross-off from the SE, keeping it clean. It’s still rated “poor surf conditions” with a 0 score, but the size is the biggest of the entire 16-day window. However, that short period (5-6 seconds) means the waves will be weak, crumbly, and lacking punch. For a beginner, 4 ft is on the high side of okay, but the quality just isn’t there. It’s more of a novelty than a proper session.

After that, Friday, September 4th, has a morning of 2 ft from the NNW with 8-second period and energy of 64 (weak), again rated “surfable but very ordinary” with a 1. The rest of the period from September 5th to September 8th drops back to tiny, weak swells (0.3 ft to 2 ft) with energy in the single digits, and the wind goes variable, sometimes onshore. It’s a dead end.

So, the only two moments where you could even get wet are Wednesday, September 2nd (morning) and Thursday, September 3rd (afternoon). Neither is a true standout – the swell is too weak, too short-period, and the quality is poor. But if you’re dying for a paddle, Thursday’s 4 ft is the biggest, and the clean, cross-off wind makes it the least ugly option. Crowds are possible, but not likely with this quality. For a beach and reef break, the long-period swell isn’t an issue here because we never get it. The short period means the waves will be lumpy and close out.

Honestly, on Thursday, with that short-period, weak swell and 16 mph cross-off winds, the setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The waves are too junky for a good surf.

Rusty.
