The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I'm looking at a pretty grim stretch for Newdicks Beach over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, this is one of those rare blank runs where the surf just doesn't show up for a long time. It's not unusual for this spot to go quiet, but this is a painful one.
The first week is a total write-off. From now, right through until the 23rd of July, there's nothing doing. We're talking about 9 days of flat or near-flat conditions with tiny, weak waves that won't even get you wet properly. The odd ripple might show, but it's not surfable for anyone.
The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Thursday, July 24th. The swell finally picks up to 4ft from the NNE with a period of 11 seconds, which is a nice long-period groundswell. The energy is moderate (123), but the real winner here is the glassy, dead-calm wind. That's a rare treat and will make for some silky smooth lines. The water temperature is sitting at 58°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year, so nothing too unusual there.
The standout of the whole period is the morning of Sunday, July 26th. That's your call. The swell is a solid 7ft from the NE with a 12-second period, pumping out strong wave energy (1017). With the wind glassy again, this is going to be a proper session. That said, 7ft is a solid size, so this is really for the experienced crew. Beginners will be in over their heads. The long period will also mean it's a bit straight at this beach-and-reef set-up, so look for the corners.
The morning of Saturday, July 25th is also a very strong option: 6ft from the NE with a 12-second period, clean with a cross-offshore wind, and a very strong energy rating (752). That's a great warm-up for the Sunday.
The morning of Monday, July 27th is still good, with a 5ft NE swell, clean offshore wind, and solid energy (683). After that, the swell fades out quickly through the rest of the week. By Wednesday the 29th, it's back to small, ordinary surf.
So, to wrap it up: you've got a long, flat wait until the 24th, with the 26th of July morning being the absolute best of the lot. The wind is a major positive for those days, making up for the lack of consistency. Stay keen, but be patient.
Rusty.
