Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Newdicks Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is pretty flat and ordinary. We’ve got a bit of surfable chop here and there, but nothing to get excited about. You’ll find some small, weak energy rolling in on the 5th of July, with a 4ft NNE swell but it’s short period at 6 seconds, so it's not gonna have much punch. The combined energy is only 149 (moderate). Not exactly a day to call in sick for.
The real story, the one you wanna circle on your calendar, is Saturday the 18th of July. That’s when things get serious. Saturday morning we’ve got a clean 7ft swell from the north, with gentle offshore winds from the south-west. The period’s still a bit short at 8 seconds, but the combined energy is a strong 551. This is solid, powerful surf – definitely for experienced surfers only.
And then Saturday afternoon... whoa. The swell jumps to a 10ft north swell, still with clean offshore winds, and the combined energy skyrockets to 1251. That is very strong energy, proper heavy stuff. This is not a day for beginners; this is for the crew who know what they’re doing. The direction (N) matches up well with the optimum ENE for the spot, so the waves should line up nice on the reef. Expect clean, powerful sets rolling in.
Before that standout, there are a few sessions barely worth a mention. The morning of the 5th you might get a 4ft NNE windswell, but it’s messy. The 8th and 9th of July have tiny swell and offshore winds, but we’re talking 3ft and 2ft – small, clean, but nothing to write home about. There’s a massive gap of near-flat conditions from the 10th all the way through to the 17th, with swell barely reaching 0.7ft.
So, bottom line: don’t waste your time until the 18th. If you’re an experienced surfer, the 18th of July is your day. Saturday afternoon especially – big, clean, powerful waves. Just don’t take the beginner crew. The water temperature is sitting around 59° – about average for the time of year, so a 3/2mm steamer will do you fine.
This is Rusty, signing off. Keep an eye on the horizon.
