The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch is looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long, flat spell ahead with hardly anything worth paddling out for, and when a bit of swell does show, it’s either mushy, messy, or blown out. If you’re desperate, there’s one window that might just save the week, but don’t hold your breath.
Starting now, we’re in a proper dry spell. From Monday the 17th through to Saturday the 22nd, it’s tiny—ankle-biters at best. Newdicks Beach (a beach and reef setup) will be dribbling in at 0.3ft to 1ft, with periods around 5 to 9 seconds. That’s barely a ripple. The mornings are clean, with light offshore breezes and even some glassy conditions on Thursday the 20th, but there’s simply no energy behind it. The combined swell energy is pitiful, sitting in single digits (2–36) most days—there’s nothing to push through. Water temps are sitting at 58°, about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. A few days of this and you’ll be better off checking the tide pools.
Then we get a bit of a pulse on Sunday the 23rd, with the swell bumping to 3ft out of the northwest, but the wind swings onshore and cross-shore, making it lumpy and choppy. Not worth it. The energy ticks up to 55–60, but that’s still weak, and the period is only 5–6 seconds—short-period windswell that’ll break all over the place. Monday the 24th cleans up with cross-off winds and 3ft, but it’s still pretty weak sauce and the breaks will be inconsistent. The energy climbs to 80, which is a touch better, but honestly, you’re looking at knee-high slop. The rest of that week stays in the 2ft to 2ft range, with the same cross-off conditions—clean but gutless.
Now, here’s the one that might just get your hopes up. Saturday the 29th of August, the swell jumps to 7ft out of the north with an 8-second period, and the combined energy leaps to 546—that’s the only real pulse in the whole window. But here’s the catch: it’s coming from the north, which is not the optimum direction for Newdicks. The guidance says this spot likes ENE swell, so you’ll get some size but it could be a bit raw and closed out. The wind is light cross-shore, so it’ll be rideable, but don’t expect perfection. Sunday the 30th drops to 4ft with a similar direction, and the wind turns cross-onshore, making it choppy—less interesting.
Beyond that, it fades fast. The 31st and into September 1st are back to small, messy, rain-soaked conditions, with nothing worth chasing. So there you have it—one day, Saturday the 29th, with a touch of size, but it’s a gamble. Everything else is flat or sloppy. If you’re a beginner, that 7ft day will be too much; stick to the tiny clean mornings if you just want to get wet. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game, and the longer-range stuff is promising but far from certain.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on that ENE direction—if it swings around, things could change fast.
Rusty.
