The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. To be honest, it’s a pretty bleak outlook for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a spot called Newdicks Beach, a beach and reef setup that’s usually inconsistent, and looking at the forecast, it’s mostly a whole lot of nothing. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is about a degree and a half colder than normal for this time of year, so it’s a bit nippy.
The first few days are a write-off. From Friday the 17th right through to the end of July, we’re looking at pretty much flat conditions with tiny swell, mostly around 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The energy is weak, with a combined swell energy reading of just 2 to 12, which is basically nothing. There’s no real surf to speak of, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” A few mornings have glassy or clean conditions, but with no swell, that doesn’t mean a thing.
There’s a slight bump around the 24th of July, where we see swell height climb to 3ft on Friday afternoon, coming from the NNW with a short period of 5 seconds. The energy is still low, only 27, and it’s still described as poor. This is not worth getting excited about.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is on the 1st of August. Saturday morning sees a 1.0ft swell from the NE with a very long period of 15 seconds and a combined energy of 42. The wind is offshore (SW at 10 mph), so it should be clean. Saturday afternoon bumps up to 1ft from the NE, still with that 15-second period, and energy of 78. The wind is cross-shore from the WNW. This has the longest period of the whole run, but with such small waves and an inconsistent break, it’s still a gamble. The swell direction from the NE is not the optimum ENE that the spot prefers, so it might not set up perfectly.
Honestly, it’s a tough run. There’s a massive gap of flat days from the start until the end of July. For any surfer, the best bet is to keep an eye on that 1st of August window, but it’s a long way out, and given the conditions, it’s more of a hope than a plan. The water is a bit colder than usual, and the lack of any consistent swell makes this a pretty poor stretch for a paddle.
