Alright, Rusty here, checkin' in from the sand. Let's break down what Newdicks Beach has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. It's a story of patience, broken up by a few decent windows.
Overall, it's a lot of sitting on the beach. There’s some energy in the first few days, but it comes with messy sideshore winds. After that, from the 10th right through the 16th, we hit a real dead zone – a flat spell that lasts nearly a week. The water temperature is about 15°, just normal for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The first little pulse hits Sunday morning, July 5th. You're looking at 2.0m (7 ft) of north swell, but it's short-period windswell at 7 seconds, so it'll be lumpy. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the west, which keeps it clean-ish. The energy is moderate. It's something to ride, but don't get too excited. The real near-term winner is Wednesday morning, July 8th. We've got a clean 1.8m (6 ft) of north swell, period stretching to 10 seconds giving it some grunt, and a light offshore wind from the south. That’s a good combo. The energy is solid (650) and the quality is high. Then that afternoon goes glassy with 1.7m (6 ft) waves coming from the north-northeast. That's your best bet for clean, fun waves in the first week.
Then, like I said, the ocean takes a nap. Almost nothing from the 10th to the 16th.
Then, on the horizon, we have the big show. Friday morning, July 17th. This is a serious pulse: 4.0m (13 ft) of north swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy is massive at 3631 – that’s a lot of water. The wind is forecast to be glassy. This is a heavy, powerful swell, perfectly clean. But it's for experts only. At that size, with a north swell on this beach and reef set-up, it's going to be mean and the lines might be a bit close together. It’s a long way off, so treat it as a promising rumor until it gets closer.
So to put it simply: the standout sessions are Wednesday morning, July 8th for clean, manageable fun, and Friday morning, July 17th for the big-wave crew. Everything else is a battle against the onshores or a flat spell.
Rusty.
