The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty.
Look, I've gotta be straight with you – for the next couple of weeks, Newdicks Beach is giving us almost nothing to work with. It's a frustrating run of tiny, weak swells and poor conditions. There's a massive gap of dead flat days from the start, and honestly, it's not until the very end of the forecast that we even see a glimmer of something rideable. This is a real test of patience.
The first hint of any real action doesn't show up until Sunday, the 2nd of August. The morning is the only time that looks half-decent, and even then, it's a marginal call. We've got a NNW swell pushing in at about 4ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW at 9 mph, which will keep the surface clean. The combined swell energy is a moderate 235. It's not gonna be a classic, but it's the only window in the whole 16 days with a "good" surf condition tag. The afternoon sees the same swell drop to 4ft and the energy fade to 175, so don't expect it to hold all day.
Before that, it's a whole lot of nothing. The 31st of July gets a bit of a bump with a nor'-northeast swell, but it's blown out by strong onshore winds, making it a messy, lumpy mess. The 1st of August has a similar size swell but with better cross-offshore winds, keeping it clean, but the models still call it poor surf. The water temp is sitting around 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want a good wetsuit.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is that Sunday morning on the 2nd of August. It's the only time the stars even partially align. The swell is a bit much for beginners at over 5ft, but it's not crazy. The main problem is the break itself – it's a beach and reef setup that's inconsistent and rarely breaks, so even when there's energy, you can't bank on it. With the wind being clean and cross-off, it's the best the area's got, but that's not saying much.
Most of the time, the swell is tiny, under 2ft, with weak energy readings in the single digits. The wind is often cross-off, which keeps the water smooth, but there's just no wave to ride. It's a blank run that's pretty normal for this spot when the swell window shuts down.
