The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. The 16-day outlook for Mothecombe is a real dry spell. There are no good surf options on the cards for the whole period. The guidance tells me this spot is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner break, and we’re getting none of the right swell. The whole run is a gap, a blank, from now through to the 21st of August. It’s a quiet patch, but for this area, a long stretch without any rideable waves is more normal than you’d hope.

The first record is for the morning of the 6th of August, and it’s a flat, poor surf scene with a tiny 2ft of swell coming from the SW, with a weak 27 combined energy. The wind is a cross-shore from the WNW at 9 mph, just making things messy. The water temperature might feel a bit off, but it’s sitting around average for the time of year.

We drag through the 7th and 8th with even smaller waves – 0.7ft and 0.3ft – and the combined energy drops to single digits. There’s a slight glimmer on the morning of the 8th and 9th with glassy conditions, but with no height or energy, you’re just floating around. The 10th has a clean morning with a light offshore from the NE at 6 mph, but again, it’s a 0.7ft, 8-second swell. Not enough to push a sea gull.

We get a little bump in height on the 12th, with the swell hitting 2ft from the WSW and a period of 9 seconds, but the energy is still weak at 69, and the wind is cross-onshore, chopping it up. The 13th sees the swell reach 3ft with a period of 10 seconds and the combined energy finally climbs into triple digits at 103, but it’s a morning of light cross-onshore wind, and the quality is still poor.

The 15th of August is the closest we get to a pulse. The Saturday morning shows a 3ft swell from the W with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 218. The wind is a light cross-shore from the NW at 6 mph, which is the cleanest it gets, but it’s still short-period, weak stuff. The afternoon gets messy with onshore wind at 16 mph. The 16th shows a bit more size, 4ft from the SW on the Sunday afternoon, but the energy is moderate at 116 and the wind is onshore, so it’s a lumpy close-out.

After that, it fades back into the 1.0ft and 0.7ft range for the rest of the run through the 21st of August. The wind shifts around, but nothing ever lines up. There’s nothing to get excited about. The gear stays in the shed.

Rusty.
