The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this is a tough one for Mothecombe. I’ve stared at the charts and there isn’t a single session in the entire 16-day window that I’d paddle out for. The forecast is a long, flat, and frankly frustrating run of "poor surf conditions" from August 6th all the way through to August 21st. That’s a solid two weeks with nothing worth getting wet for.

Right from the start, Thursday morning the 6th gives us a tiny 2ft swell from the SW with a short 6-second period. The combined energy is barely a whisper at 26, and we’ve got a cross-shore wind. It’s just not happening. We do see a small bump in energy around the 13th, with the combined energy hitting 121 on Thursday afternoon, but the swell is still only 3ft with a short period and onshore wind. That’s a messy, choppy mess.

The biggest numbers show up on the 15th, Saturday afternoon, when we get a 3ft swell from the W with a combined energy of 220, but the period is still a weak 8 seconds and the wind is a moderate cross-shore. It’s enough to get the surface bumpy, but not enough to form a wave you’d actually want to ride. The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal at 66°, sitting about 4° above average for the time of year, but that’s about the only highlight.

The one that might catch your eye is August 20th, Thursday morning, showing a 5ft swell from the WSW with a combined energy of 110, but again, the period is a lousy 5 seconds and the wind is light cross-onshore. It’s a close-out machine on a beach break. Even August 19th, Wednesday morning, has 5ft from the same direction, but with a 12 mph onshore wind and a 6-second period, it’s just a washing machine. Honestly, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with that much wind and chop.

There’s no standout here. Mothecombe is a sheltered spot, and when it’s not working, it’s not working. Keep the board in the car for a few weeks, or pray the forecasts change. I’ll be watching the charts for you, but today, I’ve got nothing.

Rusty.
