The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the waves ahead for Mapuzi.

The next 16 days are a bit of a mixed bag, with the first real standouts hanging on the distant horizon. Don’t expect to get your hair wet until the second week, but when it comes, there’s a couple of windows that look proper.

The first decent surf sets up from Thursday morning, August 6th. It’s not a belter, but you’ll find a clean 3ft easterly swell with a 10-second period, pushed along by a light cross-offshore breeze. The water’s sitting at 71°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing crazy, but it’s a nice touch. The combined energy is moderate at 299, so it’s more of a grovel session than a classic. The consistency is a worry here, though – Mapuzi is a reef and river setup that’s inconsistent, so it might take a while to get a set.

Friday morning, August 7th, cleans up a bit more with a 3ft SSW swell, same cross-off breeze, and a slightly longer 13-second period. The wave energy bumps up to 432, still moderate. It’s a notch better, but nothing to write home about.

Saturday morning, August 8th, brings a 3ft SSW swell with a long 15-second period, which sounds promising, but it’s a bit messy with cross-shore wind. The energy jumps to 759, moderate to strong. It’s still a marginal call.

The real standout doesn’t show until Wednesday morning, August 12th. The wind drops out completely – glassy conditions – and we’ve got a 5ft SE swell rolling in, though the period is short at 8 seconds. The energy is 582, moderate. This is the cleanest surf of the period so far, with that perfect glassy surface. It’s the best on offer in the first week, but crowds are possible at Mapuzi, and with it being inconsistent, you might have to sit and wait for the good ones.

The second standout hits on the morning of Sunday, August 16th. Another glassy morning, with a 5ft easterly swell and a much better 11-second period. The energy is 529, moderate. This one will have a bit more push and shape. The wind is dead calm again, making it another clean session. This is the pick of the fortnight, but it’s more than a week away, so treat it as a promising one – forecasts can change, but the signals are strong.

Between those two glassy windows, the afternoons tend to get chopped up by onshore winds. The swell stays around 3ft to 4ft, but the quality drops. The morning of Monday, August 18th, shows a clean 4ft easterly swell with a light cross-offshore breeze, which is worth a look, but it’s not as special as the two standouts.

After the 20th, the energy really drops off, with small, weak swells and messy winds. The combined energy dips below 100 on the 21st, so it’s pretty much game over for the end of the period.

The bottom line: circle August 12th morning and August 16th morning. Those are the cleanest, glassiest windows with the best wave quality. The rest is a lot of waiting and marginal sessions.

Rusty.
