The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening with Le Kerou over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – for a long stretch, it’s looking pretty grim.

First things first: the water temp is sitting at 68°F, which feels a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so you can get away with a thinner suit right now.

Right from the get-go on Thursday the 20th, it’s a write-off. We’ve got a 5ft cross-on swell from the west, but that wind is howling at 22 mph. Combined wave energy is moderate at best (384), but it’s a messy, lumpy mess. Not worth paddling out. Friday the 21st is more of the same – smaller swell, cross-on wind, just poor. Saturday the 22nd actually sees clean conditions with a cross-off breeze, but the swell drops to a tiny 2ft to 2ft. You’ll be bobbing around on very weak energy (38-50). Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th stays tiny. There’s a brief moment on Sunday afternoon where a 12-second period groundswell sneaks in, but it’s only 1ft. You’d need a longboard and a lot of hope.

Then we hit Wednesday the 26th. The swell kicks up to a solid 7ft from the southwest with moderate energy (610), but it’s a cross-onshore mess with heavy rain and t-storms. Not clean, not fun. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see the swell stick around 6ft to 8ft, but the wind stays cross-on or even onshore, keeping it choppy and lumpy. The combined energy jumps into the strong range (662-819), but with that wind, it’s a battle, not a joyride. For most folks, this is too big and too blown out – it’s looking more like a kitesurfing setup than a paddle surfer’s dream. Saturday the 29th hits the peak with 8ft swell and energy over 1000, but again, cross-on winds ruin it. This is expert territory only, and even then, it’s not clean. Sunday the 30th is a total loss – 31 mph near-gale winds and blown-out surf.

The best of the whole forecast comes on Thursday the 3rd of September. That’s the standout. We finally get a clean, moderate offshore breeze from the northeast, 5ft of swell wrapping in from the west-southwest, and combined energy of 213-224. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit inconsistent and won’t have that groundswell punch, but with glassy-to-clean conditions and a gentle offshore, it’ll be fun. Friday the 4th offers a little more: the swell drops to 4ft from the west, but on Friday afternoon we get glassy conditions (3 mph easterly, light air). That could be a real sneaky session if you’re patient, with clean little waves.

The one to circle on the calendar is Thursday the 3rd. The combination of clean offshore winds and a surfable 5ft swell from the west-southwest makes it the best bet for a proper session. It’s not a pumping groundswell day, but it’s the closest we get to good conditions in this entire 16-day stretch.

The rest of the first week is a write-off. There’s a long gap of poor-to-tiny surf from the 20th all the way to the 2nd of September. That’s a solid 13 days of mostly rubbish. But as always, forecasts can shift, and it tends not to stay this flat and messy forever.

Rusty out.
