The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Le Kerou. It’s a bleak 16-day outlook, to be honest. There’s a big gap of nothing from the start until the 26th of August. For over a week, the wind is a nightmare – mostly onshore or cross-on – and the swell is tiny. The combined wave energy is mostly in the low double digits (10 to 155), which is weak. If you’re a beginner, you might get a few knee-high waves on the morning of the 22nd when the wind goes offshore and it’s glassy, but it’s only 0.6m from the W, with a period of 8 seconds. It’s not a standout.
The one real highlight is the morning of the 27th of August. We’ve got a 2.0m swell from the WSW, but the period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell. The key is the wind: it’s glassy, dead calm, so it will be clean. The combined energy is 417 (moderate), and the water temperature is 21°C, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a big deal. The break is exposed to the W, and the swell is from the WSW, which is close to the optimum direction. It’s a good, fun session for a beginner to intermediate, but it’s not a powerful groundswell.
After that, the wind kills it again. The 28th of August brings a big 3.0m to 3.5m swell from the WSW, but with a strong cross-on wind, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined energy is massive (1221 to 1806), but it’s too big for a beginner, and the wind is bad. The 29th has a 3.0m swell from the W with a long period of 12 seconds, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy is extreme (3030). That’s a powerful swell that will be breaking straight at a beach break, so it’s not the best spot. Only for experts, and even then, the wind is a letdown.
The morning of the 30th has a 2.1m swell from the WSW with a light onshore wind, but it’s a marginal call. The 31st has a 2.2m swell from the WSW with a cross-shore wind, but it’s not clean.
So, the only standouts are the glassy morning of the 27th for a clean, fun-sized wave, and maybe the 22nd morning for a tiny, clean beginner wave. The rest is poor. The surf is weak, the wind is mostly onshore, and the big swells are too big and messy. It’s a tough stretch.
