The Lowdown
Alright folks, ol’ Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the outlook for Le Kerou is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window that’s basically a whole lot of nothing good for a surf. The first recommendation doesn’t even pop up until the 22nd of August, and even then, it’s a real struggle.
The whole period is plagued by messy conditions. The wind is almost always onshore, cross-onshore, or just flat-out wrong for getting clean waves. The swell is tiny, weak, and mostly short-period. It’s a real bummer.
Let’s walk through it. Starting Saturday the 22nd, we’ve got a tiny 2 ft swell from the west with a short 8-second period at Le Kerou. The combined energy is a measly 50, so it’s barely a ripple. The cross-off wind from the east at 6 mph is the best we’ll see, but there’s just no power behind it. The water is sitting at 67°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a touch balmy, but that’s the only highlight.
Sunday the 23rd is even worse, with the swell dropping to 0.3 ft. The rest of the week just gets progressively more frustrating. The wind picks up to 19 mph and swings around, making it choppy and messy. On the 27th of August, we get a jump in swell height to 8 ft from the southwest, but it’s a complete write-off. The wind is onshore at 19 mph, with a risk of t-storms, and the combined energy hits 853, which is substantial, but it’s all wind-driven junk. This is a classic case of “significant swell, poor surf quality, strong wind” – it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The strong wind continues through the 28th and 29th, with swell holding around 8 ft and 5 ft, but it’s all cross-on and messy as hell. The combined energy drops back down to moderate levels (291 on the 29th), but the quality is just not there. The wave comment is “poor surf conditions” for every single row in the data. There is no standout, no hidden gem, no window of glory.
Into the second week of September, the swell drops back down under 3 ft, and the wind remains a problem. The energy is weak, with values like 108 and 249. The period is still short, around 8-10 seconds, which isn’t terrible, but it’s not enough to overcome the constant onshore breeze. There’s no clean, glassy morning, no perfectly offshore wind, and no crisp, long-period groundswell to get excited about.
So, the honest truth? There’s nothing to recommend. The entire 16-day forecast is a blank run. For a spot like Le Kerou, which is fairly consistent, this is a real dry spell. Keep the board in the car, check the cams, and hope the forecasts change. The wind patterns are just locked in a bad cycle for us.
Hang in there,
Rusty
