The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here with the rundown for Le Kerou. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. This 16-day outlook is a dud. There’s nothing worth paddling out for. It’s a long, quiet stretch, and for this spot, that’s just how it goes sometimes.
We’re only looking at Le Kerou. It’s a wave for beginners that breaks fairly consistently off a westerly swell. The water’s about 68°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for the season.
Here’s the day-by-day, but don't get your hopes up.
Right off the bat, Friday August 21st is a mess. We’ve got a 4ft west swell, but the wind is cross-onshore and blowing, making it choppy and lumpy. The wave energy sits at 223, but the conditions are poor.
Saturday the 22nd has a tiny 2ft swell. The morning wind goes offshore, which is clean, but the wave energy is weak at 50, and there's just not enough water pushing through. Sunday the 23rd is cleaner with light cross-offshore breezes, but the swell is even smaller at 1ft, with a 12-second period that feels like an eternity between sets. The energy reading is a weak 24. This clean, flat spell carries on through Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, with wave heights under 2ft and energy barely over 50. On Tuesday the 25th, the wind goes light and cross-shore, but there’s no power.
Then things get noisy. From Wednesday August 26th to Sunday the 30th, the swell jumps to 6ft to 8ft. The combined energy gets strong too – a moderate 298 Wednesday morning, then a powerful 1446 Wednesday afternoon, and several more strong reads in the 400-500s. But don’t be fooled. The wind is howling straight onshore, there's a risk of thunderstorms, and the period is a short, weak 7-8 seconds. Every session is labeled "poor surf conditions." At over 7ft with that short period and onshore wind, it's just a messy, blown-out wall of white water. This setup is way better for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The onshore wind and short-period swell will make it a washing machine.
After that stormy spell, Monday August 31st through Saturday September 5th sees the swell drop right off again. Heights fall back under 3ft, and energy levels dip back into the double digits. The wind does clean up sometimes, like on Thursday September 3rd with a clean cross-offshore breeze on a tiny 3ft swell (energy at 67), but it’s still too weak.
Bottom line: there’s no standout session here. No best option. If you’ve got a kite and that westerly wind is cranking on the bigger days, go for it. For the rest of us, it’s time to kick back and wait for a change. It doesn't stay this bad forever, but for now, the surf is flat and blown out.
Rusty.
