The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf at Le Kerou. I've stared at the charts, and there’s just nothing happening that’s going to get the heart rate up. It’s a flat, blown-out, messy stretch ahead.
We’re looking at a long gap with no real surf. From now through the 21st of August, it’s a whole lot of ankle-biters and onshore chop. There’s a little bump of energy on the 20th, with the swell pushing to 5ft and the combined energy reading 331 to 342, but the wind is howling from the west at 15-22 mph, turning it all into a lumpy, cross-onshore mess. Not worth the paddle out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, which is something, I guess.
The morning of the 22nd offers a tiny window of hope: a clean, light east-northeast offshore wind, but the swell is only 2ft and weak (53 energy). You'd be fighting more for the one grovelly wave than actually surfing. It’s a tease, plain and simple. Then we go into another flat spell with a bit of cross-off wind and tiny, weak swell from the 23rd and 24th. There might be a few clean shoulders but nothing with any push.
We get a slight change around the 25th and 26th, with a bit more west in the swell but the period is short, and the wind is all over the place. Nothing solid. The 27th brings a bit more size, with 3ft to 5ft, but the westerly wind is back and it’s choppy again. The energy is moderate (129 to 199), but it’s not going to be any good.
The end of the month is where it gets interesting, but not in a good way. On the 29th, the swell jumps to 8ft with a strong energy reading of 467, but it’s coming from the southwest and there’s a fresh cross-onshore breeze. That’s a big, junky, blown-out mess that’s going to close out and be more of a battle than a surf. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it’s going to be ugly. Over 8ft is for experts, and this is right on that edge, but the wind will be wrecking it. This setup looks way more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle surfers.
The 30th still has some size, 5ft to 5ft, but again, the west wind is fresh and onshore. It’s all just lumpy. As we roll into September, the swell fades away again, back down to 2ft with a fresh cross-onshore breeze.
Honestly, there’s not one standout day in this whole 16-day window. The forecast confidence for anything beyond the next few days is low, so things could change, but right now, I’d be finding another hobby for a while. The spot is fairly consistent, so it won’t stay this bad for long, but for now, keep the board in the car and the wax in the drawer.
Rusty, signing off.
