The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Le Kerou. We’ve got a long window ahead, but I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow burn for the first week and a half. There’s a real dry spell with nothing much to get excited about.
For the first several days, from Wednesday the 19th right through to the start of the following week, we’re stuck with poor surf conditions. The wind is a big problem, mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the west and southwest, giving us messy, lumpy, and choppy water. There’s some small swell during that period, but the wave quality is just not there. The combined energy of all swells stays weak, mostly under 250 (moderate energy at best on Thursday the 20th afternoon hitting 340), but it’s all blown out. We do get a little window of hope on Saturday the 22nd afternoon with some cleaner conditions from a northerly cross-off breeze, offering 4ft swell from the WNW, but the score is still just a 2 out of 10 – surfable but barely.
Things stay quiet and clean on Sunday the 23rd with very small waves, and it’s a total washout Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday the 26th, we’re still dealing with light onshore breezes and weak, poor surf. There’s a bit of a pulse on Thursday the 27th with 4ft from the west, but the period is short and the wind is onshore again. It’s frustrating.
The standout – and this is the one worth circling on your calendar – is Tuesday the 1st of September morning. The forecast is showing a significant jump in size: 10ft of swell from the SW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy of all swells is a very strong 885. The wind is offshore and light from the ESE, so it should be clean. Now, 10ft at a beach break like Le Kerou starts getting big, and the period isn’t super long, so it might be a bit of a handful for beginners. For the experienced crew, this is the best on offer the whole run, but remember this is a long-range call, so it’s promising but less certain. The water temp is normal for this time of year here.
Before that, Sunday the 31st of August morning gives us a decent 5ft from the WSW with a 7-second period and a clean cross-off wind, and the energy is moderate at 340 – a solid backup option for the weekend warriors.
So, overall, a lot of waiting for a couple of decent windows. The first week is nearly a write-off. Your best bet is to hold out for that early September swell. Keep an eye on it.
