The Lowdown

Alright, listen up. Rusty here, and I’ve got to give it to you straight: the next couple of weeks at Leadbetter are looking about as exciting as watching paint dry. We've got a long, flat stretch ahead, and the only thing that even comes close to a wave is one small, glassy window that might be worth a look if you're truly jonesing.

From Wednesday the 9th through the morning of Monday the 15th, it's all poor. The swell is tiny, and we've got light cross-onshore breezes chopping up any hope of a clean face. The energy numbers are all in the low-to-mid hundreds, which is just weak stuff. Not worth the drive. The water's running 4° warmer than average for this time of year, which is odd, but it won't put a bend in a wave.

Then, on the afternoon of Monday the 15th, the wind goes glassy and the period spikes to 20 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell. But the size is only 0.3m. The energy is still weak, and the waves will be very ordinary. This is a finless, foam-board kind of session, not the one that gets the heart racing. Still, it's the only thing on the calendar that's even marginally surfable.

After that, it's back to nothing. From Tuesday the 16th right through to the 24th, it's a flat spell. The swell stays tiny, the period drops back, and the winds are all cross-onshore. Every session is rated as poor, and the energy readings just hover around that weak mark, occasionally dipping below 100. There's just no power in the water.

So here’s the bottom line: if you’ve got a longboard and nowhere to be, that glassy spell Monday afternoon is your only chance to get wet. But don't expect any fireworks. Forecasts can change, but right now, this looks like one of those stretches that's just normal for this break. A little patience might pay off, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Rusty, out.
