The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up.
The water is running at 66°F, which is much warmer than normal – about 4°F above average, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
Right now, nothing’s happening. Friday the 17th is flat with 1ft WNW swell and poor conditions. The whole first week is a grind. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have 2ft to 2ft SW swell, but it’s still marginal. Combined energy is moderate (384 to 481), but the wave call says it’s not worth it.
Monday the 20th brings a bump to 3ft S swell with a 13-second period, and light offshore winds in the morning. That’s the first real sign of life. Energy climbs to 524, still moderate but improving. Marginal, but if you’re keen, that Monday morning might give you a few clean little waves at Beavers.
Tuesday the 21st is a step back. The swell hits 5ft from the SSW, but the wind is cross-onshore from the SE at 15 km/h, making it choppy and poor. Skip it.
Wednesday the 22nd afternoon has 6ft west swell with a very short period of 6 seconds – windswell, not groundswell. The wind is cross-offshore from the NW at 25 km/h, so the face will be clean, but that short period means it’ll be lumpy. Energy is moderate at 467. Not a standout, but it’s the most size we’ve seen.
The real standout is further out. Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th are the best of the run. On Saturday 26th, the morning has 2ft SSW swell with a long period of 21 seconds – proper groundswell. Combined energy is 760, which is strong. Light offshore from the SW at 10 km/h means clean conditions. Beavers (beach and reef) will handle that long period, but it’s a beginner spot, so that 2ft is perfect. The long period means longer waits between sets, but the waves will have shape.
Sunday the 27th is even better. Morning has 2ft SW swell, 19-second period, energy 676, again light offshore. The afternoon bumps to 3ft from the SSW with 18 seconds and energy 711 – still strong, and the wind is light cross-shore. That’s your window: clean, consistent, and manageable size.
Monday the 28th keeps it going with 3ft SSW swell, 18-second period, and light cross-onshore winds. Energy stays strong between 720 and 757. Still good, but the wind is a little less ideal.
After that, it fades. By Thursday the 30th, the swell drops to 2ft, and by the start of August, it’s back to poor conditions with tiny 2ft to 2ft swell and weak energy under 300.
So, the best on offer is the stretch from Saturday 26th July through Monday 28th July. That’s your window for clean, long-period groundswell with light winds. Beavers is fairly consistent and often has crowds, so expect company. The 2ft to 3ft swell is ideal for beginners, and the long period will give those waves some push.
If you’re a kite surfer, the 6ft Wednesday 22nd afternoon with cross-offshore wind might be more your thing – that short-period windswell is better for kiting than paddling.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
