The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next 16 days for Beavers.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a long, slow stretch ahead. Honestly, from Thursday the 20th of August all the way through to the end of the month, the surf is mostly flat and weak. The swell runs tiny, barely 1ft to 2ft, with very poor quality. The wind is nearly always cross or cross-onshore, leaving the surface a mess of small ripples and chop. Combined wave energy is mostly in the low to mid hundreds, which is weak. It’s a real grind for anyone looking to get wet.
The first faint glimmer of something decent doesn’t show up until Saturday the 29th of August. The afternoon brings a shift with a northwest wind turning cross-offshore, cleaning things up nicely. The swell ticks up to 3ft from the SSW with a period of 16 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, which will give some shape and push. The combined energy jumps to 543 (moderate), but the size is still small, so it’s more of a longboarder’s window than anything punchy. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing freaky.
The standout moment, and the only real highlight in the whole 16-day window, lands on Tuesday the 1st of September. Tuesday afternoon looks promising. The swell pushes to 3ft from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind turns clean cross-off from the northwest. The combined energy is 309 (moderate). The forecast is for “expect good surf conditions” – the best call of the whole run. Sure, the period is a bit short, so waves won’t have that long, drawn-out power, but with clean conditions, it’s your best bet. Beavers is a beach and reef setup, fairly consistent, and often crowded, so expect some company. The break is best exposed to a W swell, but that WNW direction will still wrap in and offer some fun runners.
The following days into early September stay marginal, with similar chest-high sized WNW swell, but the wind is less reliable. Nothing else really stands out as a must-surf session.
So, to be straight with you: the first week and a half is a write-off. The one window to circle on your calendar is the afternoon of Tuesday the 1st of September. It’s not a world-beater, but it’s the cleanest and most rideable wave we’ve got on offer.
Rusty.
