Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Beavers.

Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s a couple of windows where it could clean up for a session. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus if you’re paddling out.

The first real chance to get wet comes on Wednesday afternoon, the 8th of July. Beavers will see a clean 5ft swell rolling in from the WNW, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is a cross-offshore from the NW at 9 mph, which should keep the surface pretty tidy. The combined energy is reading 547, a moderate amount of push. It’s a beach and reef setup, so it’s got a bit of shape, but with that short period, it might be a bit lumpy. Still, it’s the first decent offering.

Now, Thursday the 9th of July is where things get interesting. The morning looks poor with a cross-onshore wind, but hold on for the afternoon. The wind is set to go glassy – absolutely flat calm from the W at 3 mph. The swell drops a little to 4ft from the same WNW direction, but the period stretches to 9 seconds. That’s a better wave. The energy is still moderate at 494. This is your standout session for the first week. Get out there for the afternoon glass-off; it’s going to be clean.

After that, the forecast gets pretty grim. From Friday the 10th through to the 14th of July, the swell drops off and the winds turn onshore or cross-onshore. We’re looking at tiny waves, mostly under 3ft, with periods that are all over the place. The energy dips into the 200s, which is weak. The 10th of July afternoon has a weird 2ft swell from the SSW with a 15-second period, but it’s onshore wind. That groundswell period is long, but with that size and wind, it’s a mess. Expect a run of several days with nothing really worth paddling for.

The next flicker of hope comes on Tuesday the 14th of July afternoon. Swell picks up to 4ft from the WNW with an 8-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore from the W at 6 mph. The energy is still moderate at 294. It’s marginal surf, but it’s a better size than the days before.

Wednesday the 15th of July afternoon sees the swell bump up to 6ft from the WNW, period 9 seconds, energy 485. The wind is a cross-shore from the WNW at 9 mph, which will put a bit of a cross-chop on it. It’s a bigger day, but for a beach and reef break, that size and wind makes it more of a challenge. It’s not going to be clean.

Looking further out, the second week is a bit of a tease. Saturday the 18th of July has a long-period 2ft swell from the SW (18 seconds) in the morning, but it’s onshore. Then Sunday the 19th of July afternoon shows a bit more promise: a 3ft swell from the SSE with a 16-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 737. That’s a jump in energy, but the wind is a light cross-onshore from the SW. It’s marginal, but with that long period, if the wind stays light it could be rideable. The 20th of July has slightly more size (3ft) from the SSE, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s messy.

Honestly, if you’re looking for the best on offer, it’s that Thursday afternoon on the 9th of July. The glassy wind and waist-high, clean swell is the closest we get to perfection. The Wednesday afternoon on the 8th of July is your second-best bet for a bit of size. The rest of the window is mostly small, wind-affected, and marginal. If you’re a beginner, most of the surf is manageable, but the bigger days (like the 6ft on the 15th) will be a bit much. The long-period swells in the second week are better suited to a point or reef, but Beavers is a beach and reef, so it might break a bit straight.

Keep an eye on the forecast, because it tends not to stay poor for long, but right now, pick your sessions carefully.

Rusty.
