The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Beavers.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a bit of a grind. The water is sitting at 68°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus if you’re brave enough to get in.
We’re starting on Sunday, August 23rd, but there’s barely a whisper of surf. For the first few days, the swell is tiny – just 1ft of long-period groundswell from the SW, but it’s plagued by onshore and cross-onshore winds. The combined energy is weak (160), and it’s just poor conditions. The story is the same through Monday and into Tuesday morning. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out.
Tuesday afternoon, August 25th, sees a bump in size to 4ft from the WNW, but the period is a shocking 6 seconds. That’s windswell, and it’s messy. The wind does go cross-offshore from the NW, so the surface will be clean, but the quality won’t be there. It’s a pass.
Wednesday, August 26th, through to Saturday, August 29th, is a mixed bag of marginal surf. The swell height hovers between 2ft and 5ft, but the wind is mostly onshore or cross. The standout moment in this stretch is Saturday afternoon, August 29th. The swell hits 6ft from the WNW, and we get a moderate cross-offshore breeze from the NW, making it clean. The combined energy is moderate (576). It’s still short-period, so it will be a bit bumpy, but it’s the best we’ve seen.
Then we hit the first week of September. Sunday, August 30th, has a nice 7ft swell from the WNW again, with clean cross-offshore winds. This is a solid option. The energy is moderate (508). Monday, August 31st, drops back to 4ft, and the wind goes cross-shore, so it’s okay but not great.
The real highlight, the one that has me a little excited, is shaping up for Thursday, September 3rd, and Friday, September 4th. On Thursday afternoon, the swell is a solid 7ft from the WNW, with light cross-onshore winds, and the energy is moderate (692). That’s a solid wall of water. But Friday, September 4th, is the one to circle on your calendar. The swell drops to 3ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell from the SSW (16 seconds), and the combined energy jumps to a strong 918. The wind is light cross-shore, so it should be clean. For a point break or reef, that long-period energy will line up beautifully. This is the best of the whole forecast.
After that, into the second week of September, things get quiet again. The swell stays around 2ft to 3ft, with moderate energy. The wind is mostly cross-offshore on the 6th and 7th, but the swell is too small and short on power to really get excited about.
So, to wrap it up: the standout is Friday, September 4th, with that long-period SSW groundswell and clean conditions. Thursday, September 3rd afternoon, is a close second for the bigger size. For the rest of it, you’re scratching for something rideable.
Rusty.
