The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Beavers.
It’s a pretty quiet start to the outlook, honestly. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at small, weak swell, mostly under 3ft, coming from the SSW and SW. The wind is almost always cross-on or onshore, which is not doing us any favours. The wave energy is moderate but it’s showing up in the wrong way, with a lot of poor surf conditions flagged. The water is sitting at 66°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, about 4°F above average – that’s a real treat if you’re not wearing a thick suit.
The first real standout doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 28th of July. The afternoon brings a clean 8ft WNW swell, with light offshore NW winds at 6 mph. The combined energy jumps to 1089, which is strong. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s a bit of a wind swell, but with that wind and size, it’s going to be punchy. That’s a session for the experienced crew only – over 8ft is expert territory, and this is right on the edge. The break is a beach and reef, and with that short period, it might be a bit dumpy, but the clean conditions will make it worth a look for the right surfer.
Thursday the 30th of July is a sneaky good one. The afternoon goes glassy, with a light swell from the SSE at 2ft and a 16-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell. The wave energy is moderate at 399, and the glassy conditions are a major positive. The water will still be warm, and this is a good option for the beginner crowd, as the size is small and clean.
Another date to circle is Friday the 31st of July. The morning has a 4ft SSE swell with a 16-second period, and the energy is strong at 832. The wind is light cross-on, but the afternoon goes to 4ft and the energy hits 1011. The wind is onshore, but the swell quality is there. For a point break or reef, that long period would be ideal, but at a beach break like Beavers, it might be a bit too straight. Still, the size and energy are notable.
The rest of the run into the first week of August fades back to small, weak, and messy. There’s a gap of poor surf from the 2nd of August onward.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is Tuesday the 28th of July afternoon for the experienced surfers wanting some size and clean conditions, and Thursday the 30th of July afternoon for the glassy, long-period cruisers.
Rusty.
