The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the surf over the next couple of weeks for Beavers. It’s gonna be a bit of a slow burner, so don’t go getting too excited just yet.
The long-range signals are there, but for the first stretch, we’re looking at some pretty weak and messy conditions. The water’s sitting at 68°, which is a solid 5° warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s a real treat, so at least you won’t need the full rubber.
For the first few days, through the 21st to the 24th, it’s pretty flat and junky. Swell is hanging around a weak 1ft, with energy readings in the low hundreds (134-251), and the wind is all over the place. It’s mostly cross or cross-onshore, chopping things up and keeping the quality down. Honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. You’re better off waiting for the tide to fill in and just going for a swim.
Things start to look a little more interesting from Tuesday the 25th. The period jumps up to 16-17 seconds, which brings in some proper groundswell energy, and the energy numbers start climbing. We’re looking at readings of 503 and 585 by Wednesday the 26th. The swell stays small, around 2ft to 3ft, but that longer period means a bit more push and shape. The wind turns cross-offshore from the northwest on the afternoons, which should clean it right up. It’s not going to be big, but it’ll be surfable and might offer a few fun little runners.
This pattern holds through the end of the week and into August 30th. It’s not going to be epic, but there’s enough in the water to get your fix, especially if you’ve got a fish or a grovel board. The energy is moderate, with readings solidly in the 300-500 range.
Now, here’s the thing to really keep an eye on. The last day of August, Monday the 31st, we see the swell jump. It’s still short-period windswell, coming in from the WNW at 5ft to 6ft, but with a period of only 6-8 seconds. That’s a lot of push with no shape, and a 6ft short-period wave is going to be a messy, crumpling shorebreak. This is where the setup at Beavers, a beach and reef mix, will turn into a bit of a washing machine. It’s going to be one of those days where the kites are going to have more fun than the surfers.
After that pulse fades, we get a bit of a reset for the first few days of September, dropping back to that small, marginal 2ft to 3ft stuff. The energy stays moderate though, and by the 4th and 5th, we see some better period SW swell in the 16-20 second range. The wind stays light, but onshore or cross-onshore, which isn’t ideal.
So, the standout window is that period from the 26th of August through to the 30th. It’s not going to blow your mind, but with the clean afternoon cross-offshores and that long-period groundswell energy, those are your best bets for a proper surf. It's a diamond in the rough, just remember it’s a week out, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The swell direction is projected from the S/SSW, which is right in line with the optimum for this spot, so that’s a positive. Just keep your expectations in check.
Rusty out.
