La Esquina del Mar Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the surf ahead for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch overall, with no real standout days, but there are a few windows where you might get a wave if you’re patient. The water is sitting at 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfy in a spring suit or just boardies.

The first decent opportunity doesn’t come until the morning of Thursday, 10th September. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. La Esquina del Mar (a river break) will have a small 3 ft SSW swell nudging in with a period of 17 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell, which should mean some punchy, well-shaped waves, though it might get a bit tricky if it’s coming in too straight. The wind will be glassy, and the combined wave energy is moderate at 424. It’s a sheltered spot, and the optimum swell direction is SW, so this SSW swell is a good fit. It’s inconsistent here, so you’ll need to be patient, but if it’s on, you’ll be stoked. Crowds are possible, so get there early.

Before that, we’ve got a long gap. From Wednesday, 26th August, right through to Wednesday, 9th September, the surf is mostly poor or very ordinary. The mornings on Friday, 28th August, Saturday, 29th August, Sunday, 30th August, and Monday, 31st August all offer glassy conditions with tiny 1 ft to 3 ft SSW swells, but the energy is weak to moderate (between 99 and 299), and the wave quality is just “surfable but very ordinary.” You’ll catch a few knee-high noodles, but it’s not worth paddling out for. The afternoons are mostly blown out by cross-onshore winds or onshores, with risk of thunderstorms, so they’re a write-off.

The first week of September keeps the same theme: small, messy, and inconsistent. The mornings of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th September all have glassy offshore winds, with swells ranging from 1 ft to 3 ft, but the energy is weak to moderate (148 to 376), and the conditions are still only “surfable but very ordinary.” The standout is the morning of 4th September, with a 2 ft SSW swell at 17 seconds and a combined energy of 329, but even then, it’s just okay. The afternoons are consistently poor due to cross-onshore winds and storms.

So, the only real highlight is Thursday, 10th September morning. After that, the afternoon is a write-off again, and the following days on 11th and 12th September aren’t in the data, so you’re looking at a slim window. Keep your expectations low, and you might snag a fun little session.
