The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with the imperial version. It’s a slow burner for this region, with all the action focused on one spot: Little Fiji.

The first few days are a washout. Tuesday morning is your only chance to get a paddle, and it’s a small one. We’re looking at a clean, glassy 3ft swell from the SSW with a short period of 9 seconds. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 86°. The combined energy is weak (270). It’s surfable, but don’t get your hopes up. From Tuesday afternoon straight through to the end of the following week, the wind is a mess, with cross-onshore breezes and weak, small swell. The conditions are just poor.

The real standout is the morning of Friday, August 14th. That’s the one to circle. We’ve got a 3ft groundswell from the SW with a very long period of 17 seconds, and the energy jumps up big time (986). The wind is calm, absolutely glassy. This is a reef break, so that long period is going to wrap in and give us some proper lines. The water is still warm, and the early morning window is looking perfect. Just remember, this spot is inconsistent and for advanced surfers only, so if you’re not up for it, it’s a good day to watch.

After that, the weekend of August 15th and 16th brings a bit more size, with the swell hitting 4ft, but the wind turns cross-shore, making it less than ideal. The afternoon of Sunday, August 16th, looks promising again with a clean, cross-offshore wind and a 4ft SW swell, giving you a solid end to the week.

The second week keeps the SW swell going, but the winds are touchy. The mornings of Monday, August 17th, and Tuesday, August 18th, offer clean cross-offshore winds and 4ft to 3ft swell, with the energy dropping back to moderate (582 and 492). Wednesday, August 19th, brings another glassy morning with a 3ft swell, a nice way to end the forecast.

So, bottom line: the first few days are a bust, and then it’s all about the early morning windows. The absolute best bet is Friday, August 14th, with that glassy, long-period groundswell.

Rusty.
