The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf ahead, starting with a few days of clean, smaller waves before a real standout window opens up later. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 87°F, which is a nice bonus.
Friday morning kicks things off with glassy conditions at Cabo Blanco. Swell is a clean 4ft from the SSW with a 12-second period, and the energy is moderate at 404. It’s not big, but it’s clean and fun. The afternoon turns a bit onshore and messy, so get it early.
Saturday morning is a repeat of the same story – glassy, 4ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and a bit more energy (503). Again, the afternoon gets sketchy with a cross-onshore breeze.
Sunday morning is a bit of a letdown. The swell drops to 3ft, and the wind is cross-shore, making it look a little bumpy. The afternoon is a write-off with choppy cross-onshore wind.
Monday brings a slight drop in size to 3ft, but the morning is glassy again, so it’s worth a paddle for a clean, smaller session.
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are glassy with waist-high swell (3ft and 2ft). Clean, fun, small waves for the loggers.
Thursday has a short-period (8-second) pulse, but it’s cross-shore and messy. Not worth it.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Friday the 24th is a morning standout. We’ve got a 2ft SSW groundswell, but the period is a massive 24 seconds. That’s a very long-period energy, and the combined energy is strong (642). The wind is light cross-offshore, so the waves will be clean. This is a real treat for the point breaks and reefs, where that long period will really shine. The afternoon is a letdown.
Saturday the 25th is another winner. The morning is offshore with a 2ft SW swell, again with a very long 21-second period and strong energy (723). The afternoon is clean and cross-offshore with a slightly bigger 3ft swell. This is a top-tier weekend window.
Sunday the 26th morning is glassy with a 3ft SW swell, 19-second period, and strong energy (706). Beautiful. The afternoon turns into a choppy mess.
Monday the 27th – this is the absolute best of the whole forecast. The morning is glassy with a 4ft SW swell, 19-second period, and the energy jumps to a very strong 1040. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit onshore, but the morning is one for the books.
Tuesday the 28th morning is clean with a cross-offshore breeze, 4ft SW swell, 18-second period, and strong energy (892). Another great session.
Wednesday the 29th morning is glassy, 4ft SW, 16-second period, and strong energy (749). The run continues.
After that, the swell starts to fade and the winds become more onshore for the rest of the last week and into early August. There are still some clean, smaller windows on the 31st and 1st of August, but nothing compared to that week from the 24th to the 29th.
Bottom line: The best surf is from the morning of Friday July 24th through Wednesday July 29th. The standout is Monday July 27th – glassy, solid 4ft SW groundswell with very strong energy. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. If you’re after a smaller, cleaner session, the mornings of the 17th-23rd are also good, just not as punchy.
Stay safe, keep your eyes on the horizon, and I’ll see you out there.
