The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming at Cabo Blanco. The water’s sitting at 87° – that’s a lot warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
The first couple of days, from Saturday the 22nd through Tuesday the 26th, we’re looking at small waves around 2ft to 3ft from the S and SW, with periods between 10 and 16 seconds. The mornings are glassy, dead calm. The combined energy is moderate, between 177 and 418. It’s not big, but it’s clean and fun for a longboard or a fish. The afternoons get onshore, so get out early.
The real standout is Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th. Saturday morning we’ve got a 4ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period, and it’s glassy – no wind. The combined energy jumps to 838 (moderate to strong). That’s the best combo of size, period, and wind. Sunday morning is nearly as good, with 4ft from the SW, 14 seconds, and again glassy. The energy is 772 (strong). These are the sessions to lock in. The swell direction (SW) is a perfect match for what this break likes. It’s not huge, so it’s fine for intermediates, but the long period will push some real power.
Into the second week, Monday the 31st still has a clean 3ft SW swell with a 13-second period and calm winds – worth a paddle. The energy drops to 458 (moderate). Then things settle through the first few days of September, with smaller 2ft to 3ft swells and more variable wind. Nothing to get excited about, but mornings are still glassy.
The late-bloomer is Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of September. That’s a long-range call, but it looks promising. Friday morning we’ve got a 4ft SW swell with an 18-second period – that’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is 1359 (strong to very strong). Glassy conditions. That’s a big number. Saturday the 5th is similar, 4ft SW, 16 seconds, and calm. The energy is 1031 (strong). These are expert-level waves due to the size and power, but with the long period, this exposed break will handle it. The long period will give defined sets and easier paddling, though at a beach setup it might be a bit straight. For the experienced crew, this is the best of the run.
Crowds can be a factor – it’s ‘sometimes’ busy, so on those standout mornings, expect a few others. Consistency is fairly consistent, so there’s usually something to ride.
Overall, the best of the lot is Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th in the first week, then Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of September in the second week. The mornings are the only game in town – the afternoons get blown out.
