The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Cabo Blanco (Peru). The pattern shaping up over the next 16 days is a slow, steady start with clean, small morning glass, building into a proper run of stronger, longer-period SW groundswell towards the end. The standout period is around the 28th of July, where the stars align for a serious session.
We kick off Thursday the 16th with a clean 4 ft SSW swell at 13 seconds, and the water is a balmy 87°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual. The morning is absolutely glassy, no wind, making it perfect for a longboard or a fish. The combined wave energy is moderate (450). Afternoon looks average with a risk of thunderstorms, so stick to the early.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are much the same – clean morning glass, 4 ft to 4 ft, with the same 13-second period from the SSW. The energy stays moderate around the 400-500 mark. Saturday morning is rated as very good. The best part of this first week is the Sunday the 19th: clear skies, a light offshore breeze from the WNW, and 3 ft of clean swell. It’s small but glassy perfection.
The swell dips a little into Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, with 2 ft to 3 ft, but the morning windows are still glassy with light winds. The period jumps to 15 seconds on Tuesday the 21st, which is a proper groundswell, but it’s small. By Wednesday the 22nd, the period drops to 7 seconds in the afternoon, which is short and crumbly – not ideal.
Then we hit the real gold. The week starting the 24th of July brings a serious pulse. Thursday the 23rd afternoon has a ridiculously long 26-second period from the SW, but it’s only 1 ft – that’s a freakishly long period, more of a pulse than a rideable wave. But then Friday the 24th morning: 2 ft at 24 seconds from the SSW, and the combined energy jumps to strong (719). Glassy, light wind. This is a proper groundswell setup, and with that period, it’s going to be a long, lully, powerful wave at this exposed point.
The highlight is the 28th of July. Tuesday morning is clear, glassy, with a light NNW breeze. Swell is 5 ft from the SW with an 18-second period, and the wave energy is very strong (1389). This is the best on offer – excellent conditions for experienced surfers. It’s a touch too big for beginners. The following morning, Wednesday the 29th, is still very good with 4 ft at 16 seconds from the SSW, glassy, energy strong (823).
The final few days of July and into the 31st see the swell drop back to 2 ft to 3 ft, with clean mornings but lighter energy. The 31st of July Friday morning has glassy conditions and a 2 ft SW swell at 14 seconds – a nice, small, clean finish to the run.
Crowds at Cabo Blanco are noted as “sometimes”, so if you can get out for those dawn patrols mid-week, you’ll have it mostly to yourself.
