Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s happening at Cabo Blanco over the next couple of weeks. This is a solid setup and we’re looking at a run of decent swell, but you gotta know when to go.
The water here is sitting at a toasty 86.7°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real treat, so leave the thick winter rubber at home.
The overall pattern is classic long-period, south-southwest groundswell coming in, and the winds are playing ball, especially in the mornings. There is a fair amount of storm risk around, but if you play the cards right, there are some absolute gems.
First up, Thursday morning, the 2nd of July. We’ve got a modest 3.6 ft of swell from the SSW with a very long 15 second period. The combined wave energy is 1021 (moderate energy), so there’s some push. The wind? Glassy, absolutely dead calm from the WSW at just 3.1 mph. The conditions will be clean and lined up. This is good, but the size is small, so it’s more of a longboarder’s or mid-length session.
Now, Friday the 3rd of July morning is where it starts to get a bit more serious. The swell has bumped to 5.2 ft, still from the SSW, with a period stretching to 16 seconds and the combined energy jumping to 1255 (strong energy). It’s glassy again, with zero wind from the north. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The water is clean, the sets will have some punch, but at 5.2 ft with that long period, the waves could be a bit heavy on the take-off. It might be a touch much for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, this is a standout morning.
Saturday the 4th of July morning is also a beauty. A slightly smaller 3.9 ft from the SSW, with a 16-second period. The energy is still moderate (726). And again, glassy conditions with the wind calm from the ENE. This is a cleaner, slightly more forgiving wave than Friday. If you are looking for a fun, user-friendly session in the morning, this is the one.
We then have a bit of a drop-off. Sunday the 5th of July morning is cross-shore, and the swell dips. By Sunday afternoon, the swell is down to 2.3 ft and the wind is onshore. Not worth paddling out then.
Monday the 6th of July morning comes back nicely. Clean 3.3 ft of SSW swell, 16-second period, and glassy with 3.1 mph easterlies. The combined energy is 879 (moderate). Very pleasant small-wave conditions.
The next real standout is Tuesday the 7th of July. The morning brings 5.2 ft from the SSW, an 18-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1803 (strong). The wind is a dead calm from the east. That is a very powerful, clean swell. The water will be green and the waves will be holding up. This is for experienced surfers only though. That period is so long the sets will be well-spaced but freight-train heavy. Best suited for the point or reef setups, not a messy beach break.
Wednesday the 8th of July morning is also excellent. 4.9 ft of SSW swell, 16-second period, combined energy of 1220 (strong). The wind is a slight air from the WNW, basically glassy. This is another fantastic morning of quality groundswell.
Things settle down a little for the second week. The mornings remain generally decent with clean glassy conditions, but the swell size drops and comes and goes. The morning of Thursday the 9th of July is 3.9 ft with calm winds. Friday the 10th of July morning is a smaller 3.3 ft. The pattern continues through the second week with mostly 3.3 ft to 3.9 ft clean mornings. However, there is a late-breaking highlight: Friday the 17th of July morning. The forecast shows a sharp return of energy with 3.3 ft swell but an 18-second period and the combined energy jumping back up to 1010 (moderate). The wind is glassy from the ESE. That is a long way out, so treat it as 'promising' rather than locked in, but it could be a very good clean session to finish the run.
There is a gap of very poor, small, onshore afternoons throughout the period. The afternoons are almost all a write-off due to building onshore breezes and stormy conditions. Stick to the mornings.
The best of the bunch: Friday the 3rd of July morning for the bigger, clean, powerful swell, and Tuesday the 7th of July morning for the peak energy and glassy perfection. Both of those are for experienced surfers. If you want a slightly smaller but still excellent wave, Saturday the 4th of July morning is a winner.
Crowds can be a factor sometimes here, so get there early for the best of it.
