The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this next stretch is a flat spell, plain and simple. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at tiny, weak surf that’s barely worth paddling out for. The energy is just not there. We’re talking ankle-biters mostly, with combined energy readings sitting in the low hundreds, like 186 or 229—weak, barely moving water. A couple of mornings, like Monday the 17th and Wednesday the 19th, will have glassy conditions, but with waves around 2ft and a period of 14-15 seconds, you’re just bobbing around, not surfing.

The mornings are your best bet for a clean surface, but the size is the killer. By the afternoons, we get those classic risk-of-thunderstorm buildups and some onshore wind, making things messy and often unrideable. There’s a long stretch from the 20th through to the 28th where the swell hovers around 1ft to 2ft. Energy drops, and you’ll see three-digit numbers like 119, 123, and 105, but they’re all weak. It’s a proper dead spell. The weekend of the 23rd and 24th has some morning glass, but you’re still looking at knee-high dribble. This is a time for fixing your boards, not riding them.

Then, finally, something wakes up. The last few days of the month bring a pulse. On Saturday the 29th, the morning hits with 2ft of SW swell, a 17-second period, and glassy wind. The energy jumps to 335—moderate, with a bit of push. That’s the first day I’d actually get wet. Sunday the 30th follows through: 3ft from the SSW, 16 seconds, and clean with an offshore breeze in the afternoon. Energy is 353. That’s the standout. Morro Negrito (Panama) is a reef and point set-up, so this longer-period groundswell will wrap in nicely. It’s an advanced wave, and the clean conditions will make the lineup feel more forgiving.

Monday the 1st of September also has potential with 2ft and glass in the morning, but it’s a step down. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there. Honestly, don’t burn your annual leave on the first week. Save your energy for that last weekend pulse. It’s not huge, but with that long period and clean winds, it’s the only real surf on offer. Keep an eye on the charts, though—this stretch of flatness doesn’t usually last forever.

Rusty.
