The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve got the local gen on the surf outlook for Morro Negrito in the coming days.
It’s been a flat and pretty ordinary start to the run, with hardly any real energy to speak of. The first couple of weeks are mostly small, weak, and anything but exciting. The first real sniff of decent surf doesn’t show up until the morning of Friday the 24th of July, when a very long period swell (24 seconds) pushes in from the SSW, bringing moderate combined wave energy (273). Swell heights are only around 1 ft, so it’s still small, but that long period means there’s some shape and push. The wind is cross-shore from the NW, so it’s not clean, but it’s a sign of life after a long, quiet stretch.
The real standout, and the best of the whole forecast, arrives on the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. The wind swings offshore from the ENE, just a light breeze at 3 mph, and the sea state is clean. We’ve got a 2 ft SSW swell with a very long period of 21 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (350). This is groundswell, and for a reef and point setup like this, that’s a dream. The waves will have plenty of push, good shape, and long, clean lines. The offshore wind will keep it glassy and well-shaped. It’s an advanced break, so it’s no place for learners, and crowds are possible—it’s a spot that “sometimes” gets busy, so expect some company.
The quality continues into the morning of Sunday the 26th of July, but the wind turns cross-on from the W, so it’s not as clean. The swell is still solid, with a 2 ft SSW swell, period 19 seconds, and combined energy (292) still strong. It’s still surfable, but the wind is a bit of a spoiler.
Then on Monday the 27th of July, we get another cracker. The morning is glassy calm, with the wind from the SE at 0 mph. The swell is 2 ft from the SW, period 19 seconds, and combined energy (386) is strong. This is a proper session—clean, glassy, and with plenty of grunt.
The run continues through Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th of July, with good surf in the mornings. Tuesday sees a 3 ft SW swell, period 18 seconds, combined energy (479) strong, and a cross-off breeze from the ESE at 6 mph keeping it clean. Wednesday morning is glassy again, with a 3 ft SSW swell, period 16 seconds, and combined energy (352) strong. The water temperature is about 86°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be in for a tropical bath.
The blank start is a bit of a drag, but once it kicks in, it’s a solid run of quality waves. The 25th and 27th of July mornings are the true standouts, with offshore and glassy winds, strong energy, and that long-period groundswell doing its thing on the reef and point.
Rusty.
