The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, let’s talk about what’s coming in feet and degrees.
Right off the bat, I’ll tell you straight: the next week is pretty quiet. Don’t get your hopes up for anything exciting yet. We’re looking at small, weak swell – nothing over 1ft for days – with combined energy readings staying under 200 for most of that time. The first real standout doesn’t roll in until Saturday the 29th of August.
The water is sitting at a very warm 87°F, which is about 4°F above average, so the ocean feels like a bathtub... kind of weird but you won’t be needing a thick wetsuit.
Morro Negrito is the only break on the menu, and it’s a reef-and-point setup that needs a good SW swell. That’s exactly what we start to see around Saturday morning the 29th. The swell jumps to 2ft from the SW with a period of 16 seconds – long-period groundswell. That’s proper energy (combined energy hits 294). The real magic? Glassy conditions, no wind. That will peel cleanly down that point. This is the pick of the bunch for sure.
Sunday the 30th morning is also a beauty: still 2ft from the SW, period at 14 seconds, and flat calm conditions. Combined energy is around 282. Just magic. Monday the 31st morning gives us a similar story, swell dropping a little to 2ft from the SSW, but again glassy.
Then things start to build. The second standout window is Friday the 4th of September. That morning we have 3ft from the SSW, period at 18 seconds – that’s a very long-period groundswell, which usually means long, lined-up waves on a point like this. Combined energy rockets up to 688, which is strong. Wind is light and glassy again. That’s the best wave of the whole outlook, no question. This spot is consistent, but it’s for advanced surfers. If you’re a beginner, this will be too much.
Keep in mind, this is an exposed spot and the swell direction (SW to SSW) matches the optimum. Crowds can be an issue sometimes, so get there early for the cleanest sets.
The second week also has rumblings around the 6th of September with 2ft from the SW, but it’s a bit more uncertain that far out.
Bottom line: surf is tiny until the 29th of August, then we get a solid run of clean, glassy mornings. The 4th of September is the standout – mark it in your calendar. Patience will pay off here.
Rusty.
