The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this forecast for Morro Negrito is a bit of a slow-burner. We’ve got a solid run of small, clean mornings, but the real standout doesn’t show up until the second week. The swell is tiny for the first week, so don’t expect much push. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
Tuesday 14 July (morning): The wait begins. We’re looking at a tiny 2 ft SSW swell with a 14-second period – that’s a long-period groundswell, which is nice, but it’s got bugger-all energy (138) and the waves are just ordinary. The wind is glassy from the ENE, so it’s clean, but not much to ride.
Wednesday 15 July (morning): Same story – 2 ft SSW, 14 seconds, glassy calm. The energy is a touch lower (125). It’s surfable, but you’ll be scratching for waves.
Thursday 16 July (morning): Still 2 ft SSW, 13 seconds, glassy. Energy drops again (111). This is the pattern: clean but tiny.
Friday 17 July (morning): Another 2 ft SSW, 14 seconds, glassy from the ESE. Energy (133) is okay for the size, but it’s not getting any bigger.
Saturday 18 July (morning): Glassy calm, 2 ft SSW, 13 seconds. Energy (117) is weak. You’re going to be sitting out there a lot.
Sunday 19 July (morning): Still 2 ft SSW, 12 seconds, glassy. Energy (120) is low. The afternoons are a write-off with cross-on winds and risk of storms.
Monday 20 July (morning): Dropping to 1 ft SSW, 12 seconds, glassy. Energy (102) is barely there.
Tuesday 21 July (morning): Down to 1 ft SW, 15 seconds, glassy. Energy (121) is still small. The afternoons just get worse.
Wednesday 22 July (morning): 1 ft SW, 13 seconds, glassy. Energy (79) is weak. This is a real flat spell.
Thursday 23 July (morning): 1.0 ft SW, 12 seconds, glassy. Energy (57) – you’re nearly in the pond zone.
Friday 24 July (morning & afternoon): Still tiny – 0.7 ft and 1.0 ft – but the swell shifts to SSW with a very long 24-second period in the morning. The energy picks up a bit (97 morning, 151 afternoon) and the wind is clean cross-offshore. It’s still small, but the period is interesting.
Saturday 25 July (morning): Here’s the first real standout. The combined energy jumps to 216 (moderate) with a 1 ft SSW swell at a very long 21-second period. The wind is glassy from the NNW. This is a proper groundswell window. The waves will be small but clean, with that long-period energy making every bump count. For a reef and point setup like Morro Negrito, this is perfect – the long period won’t close out. It’s consistent, so expect some fun ones. Crowds are possible sometimes, but the size might keep the numbers down.
Sunday 26 July (morning): The best option on offer. Energy hits 287 (moderate) with a 2 ft SSW swell at a 19-second period. Glassy from the NE. This is the pick of the whole forecast. The swell is clean, the period is excellent, and the wave state is glassy. This is the morning to be in the water.
Monday 27 July (morning): 2 ft SW, 18 seconds, glassy from the E. Energy (190) is still good, but a step down from Sunday.
Tuesday 28 July (morning): 2 ft SW, 16 seconds, glassy calm. Energy (164) is moderate and clean.
Wednesday 29 July (morning): 1 ft SSW, 16 seconds, glassy from the E. Energy (132) is okay, but we’re tailing off.
So, the standout is that Sunday 26 July morning with the 2 ft SSW swell, 19-second period, and glassy conditions. Saturday 25 July morning is also a solid shout. The first week is a write-off for any real surf – you’ll get clean but tiny waves. The good news is that the second week, from Saturday on, delivers the best of the run.
Rusty.
