The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
First thing you need to know: the surf is small for the next week and a half or so. Not gonna get your heart racing, but there are a few clean windows worth a look if you’re jonesing.
The standout by a long shot is Morro Negrito. This is a reef and point setup, so it handles the long-period swell we’ll see later. The spot likes swell from the SW, and that’s exactly what we’re getting. Water temp is sitting at 87°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – nearly 4° above average. You’ll be in board shorts and a rashie for sure.
We start off with a bit of a nothing burger. Sunday the 19th is a write-off: tiny 2ft swell from the SSW with a 12-second period, but the wind is cross or onshore, and the combined energy is weak (130). Monday the 20th is a little better, with 1ft of SSW swell and glassy conditions in the morning, but the waves are very ordinary. Tuesday the 21st sees a little more energy (151) and a clean cross-offshore breeze in the morning, but the swell is still tiny at 2ft. This pattern of small, clean, but weak surf continues through Wednesday and Thursday.
Then things start to show a pulse. Friday the 24th brings a jump in combined energy to 306, but it’s a 1ft swell with a very long 24-second period, and the wind is cross-shore. The long period means the waves will have shape at Morro Negrito’s point, but the size is still tiny. It’s marginal.
The real gift comes in the second week. Saturday the 25th is the first day that looks genuinely good. Morning sees 2ft of SSW swell with a 21-second period, clean cross-offshore wind from the east, and combined energy of 357. The sets will be lined up and clean. Sunday the 26th is even better in the morning: glassy, 2ft, 19-second period, and energy of 280. Monday the 27th pushes that energy up to 429 with glassy conditions and 2ft of SSW swell. Then Tuesday the 28th is the cream of the crop: 3ft of SSW swell, 18-second period, cross-offshore wind, and combined energy of 553 – that’s the biggest number we’ve seen. The waves will be punchy, clean, and the point will be working beautifully. This is the best session on offer. Wednesday the 29th is still good in the morning but the wind shifts onshore in the afternoon.
After that, it eases back. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st have some clean glassy mornings with 3ft of swell, but the energy drops back to the 270-300 range. The first weekend of August is small and ordinary again.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is mostly a waste unless you’re just happy to sit on a board in the sun. The real action is from Saturday the 25th through to Tuesday the 28th, with Tuesday being the absolute best. Get out there on the 28th for the most energy and the cleanest conditions. Morro Negrito is a consistent spot, so even though it’s small, the quality will be there when the wind plays ball.
Rusty.
