The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Morro Negrito (Panama) over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week and a half is a bit of a snoozer. This is a reef and point break exposed to the SW, known for being consistent, but the swell energy is mostly weak to moderate for the bulk of this run. Water temps are about normal for the time of year.
Starting Wednesday the 19th, we’re looking at tiny 2ft SW groundswell with a long 15-second period. It’s glassy in the morning – dead calm – but the combined energy is only 119, which is weak. Thursday the 20th is much the same with 1ft swell. Right through to about Monday the 24th, it’s all small stuff: 1ft to 2ft, mostly SW or SSW, periods bouncing from 11 to 18 seconds. The mornings often have glassy conditions (calm or light air), so the surface is clean, but the wave height is barely worth suiting up for. Afternoons bring risk of thunderstorms and onshore wind, so that’s a hard pass.
This flat spell is a long one. From the 19th through the morning of the 28th, the best any session scores is just a 1 out of 10 – surfable but ordinary. That’s a solid nine-day stretch where I can’t point you to anything good. The combined energy numbers are mostly between 55 and 190, all weak to low-moderate.
Finally, things perk up towards the end. On Saturday the 29th of August in the morning, we get a real change. Swell hits 2ft from the SW, period 17 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 326 – moderate, and the strongest we’ve seen all forecast. Wind is glassy with a slight air from the SSW, so it’ll be clean. The score hits a 2, meaning expect good conditions. That’s your standout session.
Sunday the 30th morning is also solid: 3ft of SSW swell, 15-second period, energy at 307, and a glassy offshore breeze from the SSE. Clean and with some longer-period lines wrapping the point.
Monday the 31st morning holds up: 3ft SSW, 14-second period, energy at 270, light southerly breeze, glassy. Another good early session.
After that, it fades again. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September drop back to 1ft–2ft with lower energy. But Thursday the 3rd of September morning offers a last little pulse: 2ft SW swell, 16-second period, combined energy 244, dead calm. Clean, small, but rideable.
So here’s the plan: the first nine days are flat and ordinary. Your best windows are the mornings of Saturday the 29th, Sunday the 30th, and Monday the 31st of August, with Saturday being the pick for the highest energy and glassy conditions. The swell stays under 3ft, so it’s fine for all levels – nothing big. This is a reef and point break, so those long-period SW swells will bend in nicely.
Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might see a few others, but with such small surf it won’t be busy. And remember, afternoons are pretty much a loss with onshores and storms.
Get up early, be patient, and you’ll find a few fun ones at the end of the month.
Rusty.
