The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks here at Morro Negrito. This is a reef and point setup that’s exposed to the SW, and it’s a consistent wave for advanced surfers. The story is pretty much the same day after day for a while: small, clean, but not much push.
Right now, the water is sitting at 86°, which is *much warmer than normal* for the time of year – that’s a real standout. You’ll be sweating in a spring suit or boardies.
The first week is a bit of a tease. We’re looking at tiny 2ft SSW swell with a period around 13-14 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which is promising for a point break like this, but the energy is weak (138). The morning windows are the only real play. Glassy conditions with light winds (0-3 mph) from the east or calm keep the surface clean. It’s “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – enough to get a slide on a log, but nothing to write home about. The afternoons all get ruined by cross-on or onshore breezes, making things messy. This pattern holds from Tuesday the 14th right through to Monday the 20th. A few days in there, like Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, have glassy mornings with a touch more energy (125-132), but still very small.
Then, we hit a bit of a lull around the 22nd and 23rd. The swell drops to 1ft to 1ft and the energy numbers fall below 100 (80-69). Those mornings are glassy, but it’s at a real low tide of potential.
Now, I’m going to point you to the real standout in this window. It’s further out, so keep your fingers crossed. Look at Saturday the 26th and Monday the 28th of July. The swell is still small at 1ft to 2ft, but the period is getting nice and long (18-19 seconds) from the SSW. The real story is the energy: Sunday the 26th morning has a combined energy of 211, and Monday the 27th morning has 225. That’s moderate energy and a solid step up from the rest of the run. The wind is absolute glass (0 mph) from the north or calm. For a point break, that’s a dream setup – clean, lined up, and with that long-period energy wrapping around the point. The 24th and 25th also have a bit of a spike in energy (121-185), but the wind is cross-off, which is still rideable but not as perfect.
The bottom line: if you’re chasing *anything* decent, you’re waiting for the last days of July. The first week is a patience game. The 26th and 27th mornings are your best bet – small but clean, with that long-period groundswell giving the point a pulse. It’s a long way out, so don’t book the whole trip around it, but it’s the only time this window shows a real pulse.
