The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Morro Negrito.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is looking pretty flat and ordinary. The water is cooking at 87°, which is a full 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s feeling like a bath out there, but the waves are just not cooperating.
We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell. From Saturday the 18th through to Thursday the 23rd, it’s mostly poor surf with tiny 1ft to 2ft waves from the SSW. The energy is laughable, barely cracking 100 (115 to 161) most of that time. There are a few glassy moments, like Tuesday the 21st morning with a light ESE breeze and the occasional glass-off, but the waves are just too small and weak to get excited about. It’s honestly more of a paddle-around-and-soak-up-the-sun kind of week.
Now, we do start to see a pulse of energy building towards the end of the month. Friday the 24th sees the swell period jump up to a very long 24 seconds, and the energy climbs to 278, but the wind is onshore and messy. Not the one.
The real standout window starts to shape up on Saturday the 25th. We get a clean morning with light E cross-offshore winds and a 2ft SSW groundswell with a period of 21 seconds. The energy is ramping up at 357 (moderate). That’s a promising sign. Sunday the 26th morning looks even better – glassy conditions with a 2ft SSW swell, 19-second period, and energy at 264. Clean, glassy, and that long period will give you some real push on the tide.
But the best of the best? That’s looking like Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning has a 3ft SSW swell, 18-second period, and a whopping 545 combined energy (strong). The wind is light and cross-off from the ESE, so the wave faces should be clean. That’s the one I’d circle on the calendar. The crowd factor is “sometimes” at Morro Negrito, so you might have a few others out, but nothing like a crowded line-up.
Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th also offer clean mornings with glassy conditions and 3ft to 3ft SSW swell, but the energy drops a bit each day. Still, those are solid, fun days, especially for an advanced spot like this. The long-period groundswell is best for this reef and point set-up, so it should hold up well.
After that, we fade back into small stuff for the start of August. The first week of August is looking like more of the same small, weak energy.
So, the pick of the fortnight is clearly Tuesday the 28th of July morning. The 29th and 30th mornings are also quality. Get on it.
Rusty.
