The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, to be honest, the next week and a half is a bit of a flat, sleepy stretch. We’re looking at small, weak swells that are barely pushing through, but the real story here is the wind. Most mornings are dead glass, which is a beautiful thing, but the swell just isn’t packing any punch. The combined swell energy is weak, hovering around 100 to 150 for the first week, so it’s more of a longboard or a funboard session if you’re desperate for a paddle.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Thursday the 24th of July. On the Friday morning the 25th of July, things start to get interesting. The combined swell energy jumps to a strong 487, with a 2ft SSW groundswell running at 21 seconds. That’s proper long-period energy, and with a clean offshore breeze from the NE at 6 mph, Morro Negrito (a reef and point setup) is going to be the spot. This is a standout for experienced surfers. The swell direction (SSW) lines up nicely with the optimum SW direction, and those long-period lines will wrap beautifully around the point. It’s a consistent break, so you’ll get your share, but be aware it can get a bit busy sometimes. The water is running a balmy 87°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
Saturday morning the 26th of July is another ripper. Glassy conditions with a 2ft SSW groundswell at 19 seconds and combined energy of 402. The wind is a slight WNW breeze, making it glassy. It’s a touch smaller, but still quality. The Sunday morning the 27th of July is also worth a look, with a 2ft SW groundswell, 19 seconds, and a glassy 3 mph easterly. Energy is 409. The real peak, though, looks like Tuesday the 28th of July. That morning is prime: 3ft SSW groundswell, 18 seconds, glassy conditions with a light SE breeze, and combined energy of 570. That’s the best wave size and consistency of the window. It’s a clean, powerful, long-period groundswell that will be a dream on that point, but it’s still a manageable size for a good surfer.
After that, the energy drops back down through the end of the month, but the mornings remain glassy. The 30th of July Thursday morning has a 2ft SW groundswell with 15 seconds and glassy calm winds, which is a nice way to finish the run.
For the second week, it’s all about the mornings. The afternoons are a write-off with onshore wind and thunderstorms. The standout is the Tuesday morning the 28th of July. Don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
