Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk swell.
We’ve got a solid run of small but clean waves lining up, mostly out of the SSW. The real standout is Tuesday morning, July 7th – that’s the one to get excited about. Otherwise, it’s a steady diet of waist-high, glassy surf with a few windows of offshore wind.
First up is Friday morning, July 3rd, at Morro Negrito (Panama). It’s an advanced reef and point break that’s consistent and exposed to SW swell – perfect match on direction. Water temp is about average for this time of year. Swell is 3 ft from the SSW with a very long 16-second period – classic groundswell that wraps the point beautifully. Wind is light offshore from the ENE at 3 mph, so the surface will be clean. Combined energy is 295, which is moderate. This is small but high quality. Crowds can show up here sometimes, so don’t be shocked if a few others are out.
Saturday morning the 4th is glassy with a 2 ft SSW swell at 15 seconds (240 energy). Another clean, small day. The afternoon turns dead calm.
Sunday morning the 5th sees a light cross-off breeze from the ENE at 3 mph, keeping it clean with 2 ft swell (14 sec, 211 energy). The afternoon gets bumpy with cross-on W wind.
Monday morning the 6th is glassy again, 2 ft SSW at 16 seconds, energy up to 340. Nice little push.
The best session is Tuesday morning, July 7th. Dead calm, glassy, 3 ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, energy at 530 (moderate to strong). This is the big one – biggest waves of the run, perfect conditions, long period groundswell peeling down the point. The afternoon gets onshore, so it’s a dawn patrol mission.
Wednesday morning the 8th stays clean, glassy, 3 ft SSW (16 sec, 412 energy). Afternoon gets a dirty WSW wind, so get it early.
Thursday the 9th, glassy morning again, 3 ft SSW (15 sec, 277 energy). Some rain around, but wind is calm.
Friday the 10th through Sunday the 12th sees the swell drop to 2 ft to 2 ft, with some glassy windows and onshore afternoons. Mornings are still worth it.
From Monday the 13th, we’re down to 1 ft to 2 ft swell for the next week. That’s pure log or foil territory. Energy drops below 200. There are glassy mornings almost every day though, so if you’re chasing a tiny, clean wave, there’s options. The standout in this low period is Tuesday afternoon, July 14th: 1 ft but a very long 17-second period, 200 energy, glassy. Ultra-smooth.
Wednesday the 15th morning is glassy with 2 ft (15 sec, 148 energy). The afternoon goes poor. The pattern holds small and clean in the mornings through the 18th.
So, a two-week stretch with no real size, but a ton of clean, glassy windows. Good for a skilled surfer on small-wave gear. Beginners will be fine on the 1 ft to 2 ft days. Only the 3 ft Tuesday the 7th might push a learner a little, but it’s still mellow.
Rusty out.
