The Lowdown

Alright, I’m gonna keep this one strictly to what the data tells me. No wandering off to other spots, no speculation. Let’s get into it.

Right, so the first thing I see is that there’s a bit of a wait on the surf. The first solid recommendation doesn’t kick in until the morning of Friday, 4th September. After that, it’s a real mixed bag, but the pattern is clear: mornings are the only time to seriously consider a paddle.

The standout, and the only real show in town, is Morro Negrito - Rivermouth. This is a river mouth setup, consistent, exposed to the swell, and it’s best when the swell comes from the SW. The water is sitting at 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a full 3° above average, so you’ll feel that bathwater.

The best morning of the whole run is Friday, 4th September. You’ve got a clean 2 ft SW groundswell with a lovely long 18-second period. The energy is moderate at 362, but that long period means proper waves rolling in with good shape. The wind is glassy from the ESE at just 3 mph. It’s going to be smooth, clean, and lined up. Crowds are on the table here – it says “sometimes” – so expect a few other heads in the water, but for a river mouth with that kind of quality, it’s worth it.

The Saturday morning (5th September) is also worth a mention: 3 ft SW swell, 16-second period, and glassy WNW wind at 3 mph. The energy bumps up to 474, so it’s got a bit more push, but it’s still a very manageable size. Just keep an eye on the afternoon risk of thunderstorms.

Sunday the 6th morning is a real gem – completely calm wind (0 mph), glassy, with 2 ft SW swell on a 15-second period. That’s a paddle out where you’ll be in the zone, no wind ripples, just you and the sets.

From the 7th onwards, the size drops and the consistency gets patchy. The mornings are still your best bet, with glassy conditions, but the waves are smaller, mostly 1 ft to 2 ft. The energy dips into the 100s and 200s, so it’s still surfable, but you’ll be working for your rides. The afternoons are a write-off – cross-onshore winds and risk of thunderstorms spoil the party.

Looking further out, the second week is pretty thin. The 18th and 19th of September have a tiny 1 ft swell coming in with a 21-second period – that’s a very long period for such a small wave. It’s likely to be too straight for this river mouth and will need a very specific tide to line up. The energy is weak (174 and 171), so only the most dedicated would bother.

In short, if you’re looking for a real session, aim for the first three mornings of the forecast period. After that, it’s a waiting game. Morro Negrito is a consistent spot, so it won’t stay flat for long, but this run has a noticeable gap from the middle of the second week.
