The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about La Escollera in feet and miles per hour. This reef and pier break is fairly consistent, but the first part of the forecast is a real bust.

From August 5th, the waves are tiny, barely 2 feet on a weak SE swell, with a light cross-onshore breeze. The water is a touch warmer than average, but the surf is just poor. There’s a solid gap of nothing worthwhile for the first three days.

Friday the 7th sees a big jump to 10 feet from the south, but with a strong 45 mph cross-off wind, the surf quality is marginal. That’s a monster swell with huge energy, but it’s only for the brave. Too big for most.

Your best bet early on is Saturday morning the 8th. A clean 5 foot SSE swell with an offshore breeze and a nice 11-second period. The energy is moderate, and the waves should have some punch. Crowds can be an issue, so be there early.

Sunday the 9th morning is also clean with a 5 foot S swell and offshore wind, but the size is getting up there for intermediates.

Then the waves go ugly again, with strong winds and messy conditions from the 10th through the 16th. Nothing worth bothering with.

The real standout is Tuesday the 18th of August. That morning brings a clean 10 foot SSW groundswell with glassy, offshore wind. The energy is serious (2034) and the wave shape will be excellent for experts. At over 8 feet, this is for experienced surfers only. The afternoon gets too big and the wind shifts bad. So that Tuesday morning is the one to target. It’s a long way off, so don’t bank on it, but it’s the best wave in the whole outlook.

Overall, you’ve got two real windows: Saturday the 8th and Tuesday the 18th. The rest is a lot of wind and chop. Kite surfers might like the strong cross-off winds on the 7th and 10th, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
