The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for Playa Honda. This is a run of small, messy, and wind-affected surf that’s going to test your patience more than your pop-up. We’re looking at a long, blank stretch ahead, so don't get your hopes up for any quick fix.

The water is sitting at 55°F, which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a notable bump, so at least you won't need the thickest rubber. But that’s about the only positive.

The first real chance of anything even remotely rideable doesn't show up until Tuesday morning, August 11th. We’ll see some SSE swell push in at 4ft with a 12-second period. The energy is moderate (566), but the wind will be side-shore and bumpy, so it’s going to be a bit of a battle. It’s a marginal call at best, and definitely not one for the beginners. The swell direction is right for the spot, but the conditions are going to keep it from being clean.

After that, it just fades back out. We’re talking about a week of nothing but dribble and chop, with onshore winds and tiny waves. It’s a real dry spell.

The next time the swell actually shows up with some size is around Tuesday, August 19th, but it’s still messy and blown out. The light winds on Wednesday the 20th might clean it up, and that morning looks like the best bet of the whole run. We’ll see 4ft of SE swell with a 12-second period, and for the first time, we get a gentle offshore wind. The energy is strong (459). It’s not going to be huge, but it should be clean and lined up. This is the standout, but it’s a long way out, so treat it as promising rather than guaranteed.

The rest of the second week is back to tiny, wind-blown slop. This is a classic case of a poor outlook for the whole window. The spot is inconsistent, and this is a normal kind of blank run for it. Keep your board in the car, but maybe bring a book.

Rusty.
