The Lowdown

Alright, listen up. Rusty here, and I’m looking at a long, grim forecast for La Derecha del Faro. We’ve got a full 16-day outlook, but for the first several days, there’s nothing doing. The first hint of anything even remotely surfable doesn’t arrive until Wednesday, September 16th. Before that, it’s a total bust – tiny swell and poor wind across the board.

Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th are a washout. Sunday has some size, with waves in the 5 to 6 ft range, but the wind is a messy cross/onshore from the south-southeast, ruining it. The combined swell energy is a moderate 449, but it’s all for nothing. Monday drops to a tiny 2 ft with onshore wind. No go.

Tuesday the 15th morning is the cruelest trick. The sky is clear and we’ve got a solid 25 km/h offshore wind from the west – the perfect direction for this reef. But the swell is a pathetic 1 ft with an energy reading of just 38. It’s glassy clean and absolutely flat. You could go for a swim, but not a surf.

Wednesday the 16th morning is our one real chance. The swell comes up to a modest 4 ft from the south, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 275. The wind is a light 15 km/h from the south, making for a gentle cross-shore with only a slight chop. It’s only a marginal call, but in this dry spell, it’s the best on offer. The water is sitting at 56°F, which is about 2°F warmer than the average for this time of year.

After that, it’s back to the grind. Thursday the 17th through Tuesday the 22nd is all tiny waves, mostly 1 to 2 ft, with constant cross-onshore wind. The energy readings drop into the single and low double digits. There’s a second, cleaner window on the morning of Monday, September 23rd. We get a 3 ft south swell with a light offshore wind from the northwest, making for clean conditions and a combined energy of 162. It’s called ‘surfable but ordinary’. The final days from the 24th to the 28th are small and messy again.

So, bottom line: if you’re itching to paddle out, the morning of Wednesday the 16th is your best shot. The morning of Monday the 23rd is a backup. Other than that, it’s a long, quiet stretch. The board stays in the garage.

Rusty.
