The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the outlook for La Boca Con Con. This is a very consistent, beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly exposed to the swell, and it likes a west swell direction. The water’s sitting at 54°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year.
The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, but patience is going to pay off, especially towards the end. We’ve got a lot of rough, blown-out surf to get through first.
Friday the 17th is a total write-off. We’ve got a 12 ft to 13 ft NNW swell, but it’s coming with a screaming 34 mph NNW wind, creating a near gale cross-onshore. It’s messy, dangerous, and the combined wave energy is massive (3164 on Friday morning, jumping to 3651 by the afternoon). Stay out of the water.
Saturday the 18th is still looking rough. The swell drops to 6 ft - 6 ft from the WNW, but it’s still onshore and the periods are short at 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (1068 in the morning, 965 in the afternoon), but the texture is just poor. Not worth paddling out.
The turning point hits Sunday the 19th. That’s where it gets good. The wind goes glassy in the morning, calm (0 mph), and we’ve got a clean 5 ft swell from the west with a solid 11-second period. The combined energy is moderate (786), but it’s going to be smooth. Keep an eye on the afternoon when a light cross-shore creeps in, but the morning window is the one to grab.
Monday the 20th is another clean day. The swell drops a bit to 3 ft - 4 ft from the west, but the wind stays light and cross-offshore. The energy is lower (487 in the morning, 347 in the afternoon), so it’s more of a longboard or funboard day, but definitely surfable.
We then hit a rough patch from Tuesday the 21st through Wednesday the 22nd. The swell picks up to 8 ft - 10 ft from the NNW, but the wind goes ugly again. On Tuesday it’s a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, and Wednesday it’s a 10 ft west swell with a fresh onshore wind. The energy spikes to 2949, but it’s just lumpy and messy. Wednesday afternoon has a bit more manageable cross-onshore, but still not clean.
The next standout comes on Thursday the 23rd. The morning is glassy, with a 7 ft west swell and a 11-second period. The energy is solid (1264), and the wind is calm from the southeast. That’s going to be excellent. The afternoon gets a light cross-shore, but the morning is the session.
Friday the 24th is a strange one. The swell drops to 4 ft from the west in the morning, and then by the afternoon it’s a tiny 2 ft swell from the southwest, but the period jumps to 21 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell. The energy is low (425), but it’s glassy. For a spot like this, that long period might make the waves a bit too straight and fat for a beach break, but it’ll be clean glassy conditions.
The real fireworks start at the end of the month. Saturday the 28th of July is looking excellent for experienced surfers. We’ve got a 8 ft WSW swell and a 12-second period, with clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is 1413. That’s a solid, powerful wave.
Then, Thursday the 30th of July is a dead-set standout. The morning is glassy calm, with a 8 ft WSW swell and a 15-second period. The energy is 2581. This is a big, powerful, long-period groundswell. It’s excellent for experienced surfers, but the long period means it might be a bit too straight for the beach break. It’s going to be a heavy, clean wave.
And the grand finale is Friday the 31st of July. We’re looking at an 12 ft west swell, with a 13-second period, and clean cross-offshore winds. The combined energy is massive (3965 in the morning, 3974 in the afternoon). This is heavy, powerful, and excellent for experienced surfers only. Any beginner is going to be in trouble. The crowd might show up for this one, so be ready.
The start of August (Saturday the 1st) is still solid, with a 8 ft WSW swell in the morning, glassy, and then a lighter 6 ft in the afternoon. It’s still a good wave, but the energy drops.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a washout, with a few clean windows on Sunday the 19th, Monday the 20th, and Thursday the 23rd. The real gold is at the very end of the month, from the 28th of July through the 31st of July. That’s where the size, power, and clean conditions line up. Mark your calendar for the 30th and 31st.
