The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about La Boca Con Con in feet and miles, the way my old bones remember it. We’ve got a solid run of swell coming over the next couple of weeks, but the real jewels are mid-week and then again near the end of the month. Water temp is around 57°F, which is about normal for this time of year, no surprises.
Monday, 17 August starts off ho-hum. Morning has a 3ft swell from the WSW, 14-second period, light cross-off wind, so it’s clean – moderate energy (522). Afternoon goes cross-on and gets a little messy. Not your best day.
Tuesday, 18 August gets better. Morning swell is still around 3ft, but the period jumps to 16 seconds, wind is cross-off, and energy is up to 868 – that’s some nice, long groundswell. Afternoon, the swell bumps to 6ft, period drops to 11 seconds, energy skyrockets to 1274. Still clean, getting meaty.
Wednesday, 19 August is the big one. Morning has 6ft, 15-second period, glassy conditions, energy 1582. This is powerful, clean, and only for experienced surfers. Afternoon is almost as good – 6ft, 14 seconds, glassy, energy 1572. If you’re paddling out this week, this is the day.
Thursday, 20 August stays strong. Morning 6ft, 13 seconds, cross-off, energy 1117. Afternoon eases to 5ft, 12 seconds, but wind picks up to 12 mph, still clean but a bit more texture.
Friday, 21 August morning has 5ft, but the period is only 8 seconds – short, choppy, weaker. Energy 594. Afternoon improves with 4ft, 11 seconds, cross-off, energy 679. Better shape.
Saturday, 22 August is small – 3ft to 4ft, glassy, low energy. Fine for a cruise, but not a standout.
Sunday, 23 August through Monday, 24 August are small and glassy, waves around 3ft to 3ft, energy in the 300-400 range. Good for a longboard or a beginner.
Tuesday, 25 August is a dud. Swell drops to 2ft-2ft, cross-on wind. Poor.
Wednesday, 26 August morning is messy, but afternoon turns glassy with 4ft, 12 seconds, energy 788 – that’s a nice surprise. Clean and fun.
Thursday, 27 August hits again with a very long 19-second period, 3ft swell, glassy, energy 865. That’s some serious groundswell – might be too lined up for the beach, but if there’s a point or reef, it’ll be sweet. Afternoon has 3ft, 18 seconds, energy 1114.
Friday, 28 August steps up. Morning 6ft, 15 seconds, glassy, energy 1283. Afternoon 6ft, 14 seconds, cross-off, energy 1191. Both clean.
Saturday, 29 August morning is the biggest we’ve seen – 7ft, 13 seconds, glassy, energy 1500. That’s expert-only. Afternoon goes to 7ft, but the wind turns onshore, so it’s messy. Too bad.
Sunday, 30 August morning is 7ft, 12 seconds, cross-shore wind, a bit bumpy. But afternoon is clean with 8ft, 12 seconds, cross-off wind, energy 1639. Big, powerful, and clean – experts only.
Monday, 31 August holds 7ft, 11 seconds, cross-off, energy 1012. Still good for experienced surfers. Afternoon gets gusty at 12 mph, but still cross-off.
Tuesday, 1 September drops off. Morning 4ft, 10 seconds, glassy, energy 494. Afternoon gets messy with cross-shore wind and chop. The run is done.
So, the absolute best of the lot? Wednesday, 19 August – glassy, long-period groundswell, solid size, and clean all day. That’s the one. Saturday, 29 August morning is also a standout if you’re an expert, and Sunday, 30 August afternoon is another big, clean session. There’s a quiet patch around the 25th, but otherwise it’s a solid couple of weeks.
Rusty.
