Alright folks, Rusty here, let’s get into it. The surf is gonna be a mixed bag for Algarrobo over the next couple of weeks, so we gotta pick our moments. This is a very consistent reef and pier setup, so it’s always ticking over, but the wind and energy will be the big players here.
We start off on Thursday morning, July 2nd, with some solid 6ft SW groundswell rolling in (13-second period). The combined wave energy is strong at (1137), but the morning starts with a light cross breeze and we have to deal with a water temp that’s sitting a touch cooler than usual for this time of year at 54°. Things get a bit choppy by the afternoon, so the morning is the better look, but it’s still a bit messy.
Friday the 3rd is pretty weak, with the swell dropping to 3ft and even 1ft in the afternoon. Not much to get excited about. Saturday the 4th sees a new pulse, with the morning offering 3ft clean surf from the NNE cross-offshore breeze. The swell period jumps to 19 seconds – that’s a long-period, old-man groundswell. It’ll wrap in nicely here and give some proper shape, with a moderate energy reading (741). The afternoon pushes up to 4ft, but with moderate rain around, it’s not a total washout.
Now, Sunday the 5th is the first absolute standout. The morning is where it’s at. We’re looking at 6ft of SW swell with a 16-second period, and the wind goes glassy calm – dead flat. The wave energy is pumping at (1967). That is a proper session for experienced surfers. This reef handles that long-period swell beautifully, so expect clean, lined-up sets. The water is still a bit chilly, but you won’t care. The afternoon gets a bit choppy as the southerly picks up, so hit it early.
Monday the 6th holds some leftover 6ft swell, but the cross-shore wind keeps it from being perfect. It’s rideable for the keen ones. Tuesday the 7th is a real drop-off, with the swell shrinking and the wind messy. Wednesday the 8th is a bit better with 4ft and a clean cross breeze, but it’s nothing special.
Then, Thursday the 9th is our second proper standout. Mark it down. Both the morning and afternoon sessions are looking excellent. The swell is 6ft, now from the W, with a 12-second period. The wind goes light cross-off in the morning and glassy in the afternoon. This is a solid intermediate-to-expert session with strong wave energy (1420). The water might be a bit cooler, but the conditions are pristine. Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th see the wind turning against us, making things choppy, and the swell wanders off.
There’s a big gap of poor conditions from the 10th through the 13th. The swell gets small, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore. Not worth paddling out.
Now, look ahead to Tuesday the 14th. The morning brings a punchy 6ft W swell with a cross breeze and strong energy (1888). But the real magic is Tuesday afternoon – 5ft SW swell, glassy conditions, and massive energy (1933). That is another glassy, clean window for experienced folks. After that, the 15th and 16th get blown out by strong southerly winds, with the swell getting too big and wild. By the 16th and 17th we’re looking at 10ft+ waves and fresh winds – that’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session, honestly.
So, the two days to pencil in are Sunday the 5th morning and Thursday the 9th (both sessions). They’re the real deal. Remember, with long-period swells like this, the sets can be a bit gappy, but the shape will be worth the wait at this reef. Keep an eye on the wind; when it’s glassy or cross-offshore here, it’s heaven. If you're heading out on the other days, you’ll be fighting the chop. Stay safe and pick your windows.
Rusty.
