The Lowdown
Alright, it’s Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the table for Algarrobo.
So, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up. The swell is there, but the wind is going to be a real pain for a lot of it. The real standout, the one to get you out of bed, is looking like Thursday the 27th of August into Friday the 28th. That’s where the magic is hiding.
The first couple of days, starting Wednesday the 19th, we’ve got some solid 6ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is just a mess – cross and cross-on. It’s enough to make you want to stay on the beach. The combined energy is pumping, 1626 (moderate to strong), but the wind is killing the quality. It’s pretty much a write-off for a proper session.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are a write-off. The wind is howling from the south at 12 mph, making everything choppy and ugly. Don’t even bother packing the board.
We finally get a bit of a break on Saturday the 22nd. The morning sees a 5ft SW swell with a nice cross-off breeze from the north at 6 mph. The energy is still moderate (482), but the wind is clean. It’s not a massive day, but it’s surfable. The afternoon drops off fast to 3ft, so get your session in early.
Sunday the 23rd is tiny. Totally glassy in the morning, but the swell is only 2ft, so you’re on a longboard or a foamie. The energy is weak (115). It’s a flat, lazy kind of day.
Monday the 24th sees a bit of a pulse back up to 4ft from the WSW. The wind is cross-off and clean, but the energy is still just moderate (574). It’s a working man’s wave, nothing special.
Now, here’s the part you’ve been waiting for. From the 26th of August, things start to get spicy. Wednesday the 26th has a 7ft W swell hitting, and the wind is clean cross-off. The energy is huge at 1224. It’s a big day, but it’s still a bit rough around the edges.
The best of the lot is Thursday the 27th of August. The morning is an absolute dream. 7ft of WSW swell, and it’s glassy. Dead flat wind. The energy is pumping at 1136. This is the one to call in sick for. The waves are going to be clean, powerful, and lined up. This is a day for experienced surfers, because that size is pushing the limits for a beginner.
Friday the 28th is also a stand-out, with a 8ft WSW swell and a 15-second period, giving it a massive 2385 energy rating. The wind is cross-off, keeping it clean. This is a big, powerful groundswell. It’s going to be a beast. Only for the experienced crew who know the reef.
After that, it drops off. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is blown out by strong south winds, making it choppy and messy. The swell is still big (8ft), but the wind is cross-on, turning it into a washing machine. That’s more for the kite surfers than us.
The first week of September is a bit of a letdown. The wind is still a problem, and the swell is inconsistent. There’s a very long period swell (21 seconds) on the 1st, but it’s cross-on and choppy. Not worth the paddle out.
So, there you go. Grab your board for Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th. That’s the gold. The rest is a lesson in patience.
Rusty.
