The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for our local patch.
The next week and a half has a real mixed bag of swell and wind, with a few windows of absolute magic if you can pick your moment. The water is sitting at a pretty standard temperature for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
We start off rough on Friday the 17th. A strong 31 mph northerly is making a mess of things, with a weak 5ft WNW swell and poor surf conditions. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 3ft from the SW, but still a write-off.
Saturday the 18th is a bit of a gamble. A 7ft WNW swell rolls in but the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NNW, making it a bit of a chore. The afternoon cleans up into a 6ft WNW swell with cross-off wind, but it’s still only marginal.
Now, Sunday the 19th is the first real standout. The morning has a clean 5ft WNW swell with a 11-second period, and the wind is glassy from the NE. It’s going to be smooth and lined up. The afternoon is just as good, with a 5ft W swell, still glassy. This is a proper session. The combined wave energy is moderate (813), so there’s some push behind it.
Monday the 20th is smaller but still clean. The morning glass is on with a 4ft W swell, making for a fun, easy paddle. The afternoon drops to 3ft but stays clean.
Tuesday the 21st is a no-go. A big 10ft NW swell arrives, but it’s getting hammered by a 22 mph cross-off wind, making it shifty and messy. The afternoon drops right off to 1.0ft. Not worth the fight.
The next big window is Wednesday the 22nd, but this one is for experienced surfers only. The swell jumps to 10ft from the W with a 12-second period, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore. The energy is very strong (3155). The afternoon hits 12ft from the same direction, still with a moderate cross-off. It’s a heavy, powerful, lumpy swell. If you’re not an expert, give it a wide berth.
Thursday the 23rd is another standout. The morning is superb. A 7ft W swell, 11-second period, and glassy conditions from the SE. The energy is high (1084), and the waves are powerful but clean. This is a proper big-swell day for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets a cross-on wind, spoiling it.
Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are a bit of a comedown. Friday sees small, messy waves. Saturday the 25th is the pick of the two, with the afternoon showing a really nice 3ft WSW swell, 14-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is moderate (639), and those long-period lines will be sweet.
The rest of the second week is a bit of a write-off until the very end. We get a run of poor onshore wind and wonky conditions from the 26th to the 28th, with a big 7ft to 8ft swell but blown out by strong cross-on winds.
The last clear window is on Wednesday the 29th. The morning has a glassy 3ft SW swell with a 13-second period. It’s a small, clean, long-period groundswell, perfect for a dawn session. The energy is moderate (417).
As we head into the first of August, the swell is still there but the conditions are a bit loose. The real standouts are Sunday the 19th and the morning of Thursday the 23rd. Don’t sleep on the 25th afternoon either, it’s a sneaky good one.
Rusty.
