The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks at Algarrobo.
Right off the bat, the weekend is pretty gutless. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are looking flat and messy, with light onshore breezes and not much push. You’re looking at waves around 3 to 5 feet with short, weak periods. It’s not worth paddling out for, to be honest. You’d be fighting chop for nothing. We’ve got a bit of a lull to start, so don’t rush it.
Things start to shuffle around Monday the 24th, but it’s still pretty ordinary. The swell drops right off to around 2 feet, and even with a glassy afternoon, there’s just not enough energy in the water. We’re getting a long-period SSW groundswell, around 12 seconds, but it’s tiny. The combined energy is only around 184, which tells you how weak it is. It’s a good sign for the future, but not for now.
Tuesday the 25th gets a little more interesting. The swell starts to pick up a bit, hitting about 3 feet by the afternoon, and the wind turns cross-off from the NNW. It’s clean, but the energy is still moderate at around 301. It’s surfable, but you won’t be bragging about it. The period is stretching out to 14-15 seconds, so there’s some push behind it, but the size just isn’t there yet.
Now, Wednesday the 26th is where things start to get real. The swell jumps to around 5-6 feet, and the energy leaps up to over 750. The wind goes light and glassy by the afternoon, and that’s when it’s going to be pretty fun. The period drops back to 11 seconds, which is a bit shorter, but still enough to get some shape. This is one of the better windows in the first half of the forecast. It’s a solid, clean, head-high day.
But the real standout is Thursday the 27th. This is the one. Overnight, the swell cranks up to a solid 10 feet out of the WSW with a 14-second period. The combined energy is absolutely pumping, hitting over 3000. That’s strong, powerful juice. The morning looks glassy with light offshore winds, and it’s going to be perfect for experienced surfers. This is a serious, heavy day. If you’re not comfortable in solid, groundswell surf, sit this one out. But if you know what you’re doing, this is the best session on offer. The afternoon stays big but the tide and onshore wind from the WSW will make it more challenging.
Friday the 28th keeps the size up, with waves around 8 feet and a 14-second period. The wind swings around to the north, giving us a clean cross-off most of the day. The energy is still huge, around 2470-2893. It’s another day for the experienced crew, but the winds are a bit stronger, so it won’t be as pristine as Thursday morning. Still, it’s a solid, powerful day.
The weekend, the 29th and 30th, sees the swell easing back to the 5 to 7 feet range. The period drops to 11-12 seconds. The winds are mostly cross-off from the north, but they pick up a bit on Saturday. It’s still surfable, but it’s not going to have the same punch as the middle of the week. The energy is down to around 600-1200, so it’s a step down.
Then we get a bit of a mixed bag for the first part of September. The 31st and the 1st have some onshore winds and rain around, making for poor conditions. The swell is there, 4 to 5 feet, but the wind is going to chop it up. Not worth it.
Things try to clean up again on the 2nd, but the wind is still a problem, with a cross-onshore breeze and moderate chop. The swell is around 5-5 feet, but it’s messy.
The 3rd offers a bit of respite with a glassy morning and a small, clean 2-foot swell. It’s tiny, but clean. Then the 4th and 5th look promising with offshore winds and the swell picking up to 4-5 feet. The 5th morning is dead glassy with a 5-foot swell and a 12-second period. That’s going to be a clean, fun morning. The energy is around 590, which is moderate but the conditions will be perfect.
The forecast ends on the 6th with the wind turning onshore and the swell bumping up to 6 feet, but it’s going to be choppy. Not a great way to end.
So, to boil it down: if you want the big, powerful, perfect stuff, you’re looking at Thursday the 27th, with Friday the 28th as a close second. For a more relaxed, clean, fun session, Wednesday the 26th afternoon and Monday the 4th are your best bets.
Stay stoked.
