The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Alright, the next 16 days at Algarrobo are a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows that will get the blood pumping. The surf is light to moderate for the first few days with some clean conditions, then a serious pulse of energy arrives around the 22nd. For the standout, we’ve got a classic reef/pier set-up that handles a decent swell, and when the wind plays nice, it’s on.
The week starts off mellow. Sunday the 19th is a write-off with a 5ft W swell and light cross-shore wind, combined energy of 681 (moderate), and the water is a bit colder than normal at 53°. The surf is marginal. Monday the 20th is cleaner with a NE offshore breeze, but the swell drops to 4ft from the west, energy down to 431 (moderate), and the waves are small. Tuesday the 21st is a no-go – strong NNE winds blow through, swell is tiny around 2-2ft, and the energy is weak (83-123). That’s a grim stretch.
Now, Wednesday the 22nd is where it gets interesting. The morning locks in with a 7ft W swell, a light NNE cross-off breeze, and the energy jumps to 1226 (strong). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – the water’s clean, and the reef will handle that size. It’s a standout for the first week. The afternoon gets a bit scratchy with a cross-on wind, but the morning is gold.
The rest of the week is a tale of two halves. Thursday the 23rd is glassy with a 4ft W swell, period at 9 seconds, and energy at 360 (moderate). Clean, small, fun. Friday the 24th has a bigger pulse – 7ft W swell in the morning, cross-shore wind, energy at 1025 (strong) – but it’s a bit chunky. The afternoon cleans up with a SE cross-off and 6ft W swell, energy at 886 (moderate). Saturday the 25th is average with a 5ft W swell and cross-shore wind.
Into the second week, Sunday the 26th is the pick of the early days. Glassy morning, 4ft WSW swell with a very long 14-second period, energy at 656 (moderate). That’s a nice, clean groundswell at the reef, but it won’t be punchy – more of a smooth, long-lined wave. Monday the 27th sees a return of bigger swell – 6ft to 7ft W swell, energy from 1065 to 1399 (strong), but the wind is cross-shore or cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit messy. Tuesday the 28th is for experts only – 8ft W swell, period up to 14 seconds, and energy at 2507 (very strong). The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean, but that’s a heavy, powerful swell at the reef. Only for the experienced crew.
Wednesday the 29th is a treat – glassy morning, 6ft WSW swell with a 12-second period, energy at 823 (strong). Clean, solid, and the reef will be working. After that, the wind turns onshore and the quality drops for the rest of the week. The final few days (August 1-3) look promising again. August 1st Saturday morning is glassy with a 3ft WSW swell, clean, but small. Then Sunday August 2nd has a big spike – 8ft to 12ft W swell, energy up to 3395 (very strong), with a cross-off wind. That’s for experts only, and it’s a long-range call, so less certain but a real prospect. Monday August 3rd morning stays clean with 8ft W swell, energy at 1900 (very strong), excellent for experienced surfers.
The true standout is Wednesday July 22nd morning, with that 7ft W swell, light offshore wind, and the reef handling the size. The second standout is Sunday August 2nd morning, but that’s a week and a half away – a big, powerful West swell, but only for the die-hards.
Alright, stay safe out there and keep your eyes on the horizon.
