Table - best surf conditions forecast for Algarrobo over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next week or so is a bit of a mixed bag for Algarrobo. The good news is there’s plenty of swell on the horizon, but the wind is gonna be a pain in the arse for most of it. We’ve got a solid run of groundswell coming through, but you’ll have to be patient and pick your moments.
The water’s sitting at 54.1°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t forget the booties.
We start off this Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, with a 4.3ft SW groundswell at 15 seconds. The energy is strong (1310), but the wind is a cross-on SSW breeze at 9 mph, making it fairly choppy. It’s messy, not worth the paddle out.
Thursday, July 9th, is more of the same. The swell jumps to 5.9ft from the SW with a 13-second period, and the energy is beefy (1728-1885). But again, that cross-on wind keeps it lumpy. Not worth getting excited about.
Friday, July 10th, the swell drops back to 4.3ft and then 3.6ft, with lighter cross-on winds. The energy is still moderate (970 then 781), but the wind is still onshore, so it’s a pass.
Saturday, July 11th, is a write-off. The wind picks up to 12-16 mph from the SSW, making it choppy and poor. The swell is a mix of 5.2ft and 4.3ft, but it’s not worth the hassle.
Sunday, July 12th, and Monday, July 13th, are both poor. Small, messy, and cross-on. The swell gets down to 2.3ft. Not a surfer’s window.
Alright, now for the first real standout. Monday afternoon, July 13th, things start to get interesting. We’ve got a 4.6ft groundswell from the WSW with a very long 18-second period. The energy is strong (1531). The wind goes light and cross-shore at 3 mph, which is a big improvement. The waves will have proper shape and power, but the cross-shore wind will keep it a little bumpy. It’s a decent option, but the real magic is coming.
Tuesday, July 14th, is the standout session of the first week. The morning is glassy. Flat calm. The swell is a solid 9.8ft from the WSW with a 14-second period. The energy is huge (2745). This is for experienced surfers only – it’s too big for beginners. That glassy wind is a massive positive, so you’ll be scoring clean, powerful waves at Algarrobo. The afternoon sees the wind swing cross-on, so get on it early.
Wednesday, July 15th, the swell drops to 5.6ft from the WSW, but the wind goes cross-off from the N and NNE at 9 mph. That’s clean, lined-up surf. The energy is moderate (819 then 634), but the clean conditions will make it a fun, user-friendly day. Good for intermediates.
Thursday, July 16th, the swell gets small (2.0ft to 2.6ft) with a long 16-second period, but the wind is still cross-off. It’s clean but tiny.
Now, we’ve got a gap from Friday, July 17th. The swell builds to 11.5ft and then 13.1ft from the NW, but the wind is insane – 25-31 mph from the NNE. That’s a near gale. The energy is massive (2783-4152), but it’s a kite-surfing show, not a paddle-surfing one. The waves will be blown out and dangerous. This continues through Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday morning, July 19th, with strong winds.
The next real standout is Sunday afternoon, July 19th. The wind drops to a light 6 mph from the N, going cross-off and clean. The swell is a solid 9.8ft from the NW with an 11-second period. The energy is massive (2917). This is another day for experienced surfers only. The conditions will be clean, powerful, and big. Get on it.
Monday, July 20th, is a write-off again with near gale-force winds and a 7.5ft swell. Tuesday, July 21st, looks promising with a 7.9ft WSW groundswell at 12 seconds and light cross-shore winds at 6 mph. The energy is strong (1803). It’s a marginal call, but the light wind will make it rideable. Wednesday, July 22nd, is smaller and more onshore.
The week of July 21st to 23rd is a waiting game – the swell is consistent, but the wind is often onshore. Thursday, July 23rd, brings a 5.6ft SW swell with light cross-shore winds, which could be a sneaky good session.
So, to sum it up: Tuesday morning, July 14th, is the clear winner for the first week – glassy, 9.8ft, and powerful, but only for the crew
