The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow cooker this time, with a real standout session hidden in the mix.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at Maitencillo (Chile), a river-mouth setup that’s fairly consistent and works best on a SW swell. The water’s sitting right around 57°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there. The first real session that’s got me talking is Monday, August 17th, in the morning. If you can get out there when the rain clears, you'll find clean lines with a 1.0ft swell from the WSW, a silky 14-second period, and glassy conditions. The combined energy is solid at 603, and with that offshore wind, it’s going to be lined up and smooth.
Tuesday the 18th picks up a bit more size, hitting 4ft by the morning and building to 6ft in the afternoon. The wind stays cross-on, which keeps things a little lumpy, but the energy is building big time. By Wednesday, August 19th, in the morning, we've got a standout. The swell jumps to 6ft from the SW, with a very long 15-second period and light offshore wind. The wave energy is pumping hard at 1907. That’s a proper groundswell, and on a river mouth it should be peeling nicely. The size is getting into the meaty zone, so it’s not for the groms, but anyone with a bit of experience is going to have a field day. The afternoon stays fun at 6ft, just a touch more WSW.
The run from Thursday 20th into the weekend gets a bit messy, with the swell staying up but the wind swinging around from the SSW. It’s a classic case of “marginal” with the cross-onshore winds chopping things up. It’s still surfable, but the quality drops off compared to that Wednesday morning glass-off. Then another nice one pops up on Saturday, August 22nd, in the afternoon. We’ve got a solid 7ft from the SW, a 9-second period, and it's glassy again. That’s a big, fun wave for those who want some power without the huge period making it close out. The combined energy is moderate at 903.
After that, things back off. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are smaller and the wind goes messy. There’s another brief moment on Monday, August 24th, in the morning with a clean 3ft from the SSW and glassy conditions, a nice little sneaker if you’re hanging around.
The second week, from the 25th onward, is quiet. We’re looking at consistent but small swell, under 3ft for a few days, and only marginal quality. There’s a bit of a pulse around August 30th and 31st, with swell building back over 6ft and the energy climbing up over 1200 by the 30th. That Monday the 31st morning hits 8ft from the SW with a moderate 11-second period, but the cross-on wind keeps it from being a grade-A standout. The afternoon on the 31st pushes 8ft, but the period drops to 8 seconds and the wind gets strong, making it choppy and more of a challenge. That size is expert-only, especially with that short-period, windy mess.
Overall? The absolute best of the bunch is that Wednesday morning, August 19th. Get on that, and you'll have clean, powerful, and lined-up waves. The Saturday afternoon the 22nd is a solid second for anyone who wants the big, clean swell. After that, it’s a waiting game, but the end of the month shows signs of a pulse.
Keep your eyes on the horizon and your wax on.
