The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, long look at what’s coming down the pipe for La Puntilla. The next couple of weeks have a bit of everything, so let’s get into it.

The pattern kicks off with some serious size, but you gotta pick your moments. Saturday the 8th sees a big 10 ft SW groundswell rolling in, but the wind is messy and cross. The combined energy is pumping at a hefty 3799, which is strong to very strong energy, but the quality is marginal. Hold off.

Sunday the 9th morning is where it starts to get good. That swell drops a touch to 8 ft from the SW, still solid, but the wind swings to a clean cross-offshore S breeze at 9 mph. The wave energy is still huge at 3225. This is excellent for experienced surfers only – over 8 ft is expert territory. It will be powerful and a bit raw. The afternoon stays similar but bigger again at 10 ft, so the morning is the pick.

Now, Monday the 10th is my pick of the first week. The swell drops to a much more manageable 7 ft from the SW in the morning, with a light cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is a moderate 1411, so it’s got punch without being a beast. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and the conditions look clean. The afternoon is even smaller at 6 ft, still clean, and a great option for the intermediate crew.

Tuesday the 11th morning goes glassy. A 4 ft SW groundswell with a period of 12 seconds, and the wind is dead calm – glass. Combined energy is 383, which is weak, but that glassy surface will make for some beautiful, if smaller, waves. It’s a good day for a longboard or a funboard.

We get a real lull mid-week. Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th are very small, but the quality is there. Thursday the 13th is a standout for the small-wave crew. Both morning and afternoon have a 4 ft WSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period and glassy conditions. That’s a recipe for clean, peeling lines, especially at a point break like this. The energy is moderate (754 and 671). Perfect for logging or a fish.

Friday the 14th is tiny and glassy again, but not worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate for a glassy session.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting again. Saturday the 15th sees a new pulse of swell. 8 ft from the W in the morning, with glassy conditions. The combined energy jumps back up to 1964. This is another expert-level day. The afternoon is 8 ft and still clean with a cross-offshore breeze. This is the best swell of the run so far, but it’s big, so know your limits.

Sunday the 16th is a write-off. The wind cranks up from the NNE at 12-18 mph, making a mess of the 7 ft swell. It’s lumpy, choppy, and cross-shore. This would be a better day for the kite crew than for a paddle surfer.

The following week settles down. Monday the 17th through Wednesday the 19th sees a return to clean, smaller conditions. Wednesday the 19th is the highlight of the second week, with a 6-6 ft WSW swell and clean cross-offshore winds. Combined energy is moderate at around 1087-1092. This is excellent for experienced surfers again, and much more forgiving than the weekend’s big stuff.

Thursday the 20th gets a bit windier, and the quality drops. Friday the 21st is okay, but Saturday the 22nd is another poor day with onshore wind.

The forecast wraps up on Sunday the 23rd with a glassy morning and a clean afternoon. A 5 ft WSW swell with a 12-second period and glassy or offshore wind. That’s a very nice note to end on, with moderate energy (841-974) and clean conditions. Could be a sneaky good day for anyone who waits it out.

Overall, the best windows are Sunday morning the 9th for the experts, and Monday the 10th for the slightly less crazy among us. The glassy, long-period days on Thursday the 13th are a hidden gem for small-wave craft. The biggest, cleanest swell hits on Saturday the 15th, but it’s for experts only.

Stay safe, and don’t be a hero on the big days.
